A formidable leader and wonderful role model. It’ll be interesting to see who replaces her.

she was a horrible dose. her treatment of people during covid19 is testament to what an utter sh1tebag she was.

another of those feted by the western media for no other reason that she ticked the progressive woke checklist.

recognising when to go before anyone is trying to oust you, as appears to be the case, would be just another example of her smart leadership

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,212 ✭✭✭Spudman_20000

Yeah, its not like her party recently lost a by-election just before Christmas with a 30 point swing to the Conservative National Party. Smart leadership.

I liked her because she drove the incels and conspiracy loons bonkers.

    Pure Catnip.

Have to say I’m bemused by the attention RTÉ gives that one.

any examples of her “formidable” leadership?

She was a bang average politician from a small country the other side of the world

but because she was a young woman the media feted her.

Delighted, she drove NZ(My home away from home ) into the ground with her ideals.

Best news of the day for me!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,003 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

More popular abroad than at home.

New Zealand is more unequal than when she arrived in power, housing is a big problem still, economic troubles, her party facing defeat.

She handled COVID well at the start, went on too long with that though. Single handedly brought labour to power when they were facing 4th place politically only a short time before.

Good speeches, some good actions but didn't change much or try to change much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,947 ✭✭✭✭Beechwoodspark

Can’t say I ever thought she was an impressive or - god save us, a “formidable” leader.

She seems the type that “suffers with her nerves”, full of anxiety.

a strange measure of liking somebody.

but the internet has opened my eyes to strangeness

It's very strange, people who have never been to NZ and have no idea if she's doing a good or a bad job think she's great!

I'm not criticising her, I've no idea how well she's doing either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 755 ✭✭✭foxsake

our media fete her , she is takes up space on our news sites here in ireland (and broader western nations) some of us are curious as a result.

I've seen plenty of her speeches to know what she is about and it's not good.

When the going gets tough.......Jacinda quits and leaves someone else clean up her mess!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,469 ✭✭✭rogber

Don't know what to make of her. The woke brigade give her too many bonus points cos she's a woman and says all the right things about diversity, LGBTQ etc.

The resentful angry white men brigade hate her for the same reason.

So in reality she's probably somewhere in the middle: a slightly above average leader who did some good and made some mistakes.

Anyway, I admire the way she has quit by just saying she's worn out. Far better than leaders whose sense of self importance would never let them do that.

Her speech to the UN was chilling last year!!! Governments should control the flow of info!!! Dangerous woman, like Trudeau in Canada...the leaders we were told to admire and respect turned out to be something quiet different!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,364 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

You hating her because she was "woke" is pretty strange.

    Isn't it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,028 ✭✭✭✭SEPT 23 1989

These sociopaths don’t quit having power over other people for no reason there must be something in the post for her

    we will wait and see

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,536 ✭✭✭Silentcorner

She will come out with the obligatory, "Climate Change is the biggest threat to humanity" and/or "Gender Roles are oppressive" or some such and off she'll go to the UN.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,089 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

She was in favour of reduced immigration into New Zealand. She kept it quite low. Wasn't too keen on refugees.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,364 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

Why did she increase the refugee quota by 50% so? 😕

If she wasn't keen on them like, I mean she didn't have to. Refugees can't really get to New Zealand so they have to be resettled?

Not feeling the love for Jacinda on this thread. All I'd say is pick a whole selection of political leaders around the world, countries big and small, and rate them in order of preference. Where on the line would Jacinda fit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,819 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

I would have thought an anti-refugee policy would have made her wildly popular on here but she was always loathed by the usual boards anti-woke types.

She seemed like a good honest politician to me, very good speaker and those who criticise her on covid, well I'm sure most countries could have handled that better in hindsight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 755 ✭✭✭foxsake

I didn't say that though - i said the media love her due to wokeness . is authoritarianism that part of being "woke"? maybe it is.

I defo hate wokeness but I also "hate" her ( to use your word) over her treatment of people during covid , her views on controlling people esp people with ideas that don't align to hers. Her glee of approval (if you watch the video) over NZ becoming a 2 tier society for vaxx'd and unvaxx'd showed her true colours - a horrible person

also even as a life long non smoker , I find her cigarette ban controlling and nanny state in the extreme

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,964 ✭✭✭growleaves

Last year NZ High Court ruled that Arden government's vaccine mandate represented a "gross violation of human rights".

Extremely divisive politician, popular only with people have no respect and no consideration for anyone coming from a different perspective.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,364 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

very good speaker and those who criticise her on covid, well I'm sure most countries could have handled that better in hindsight

    Really?

The country of about 5 million people has recorded fewer than 2,500 covid-19 fatalities. It has the lowest covid-related death rate in the Western world, according to Johns Hopkins University

Also packed stadiums and concerts there when the rest of the Western World was on some sort of lockdown.

I think they may have aced it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 755 ✭✭✭foxsake

    beautifully put.

Sums her and her cheerleaders up perfectly

over her treatment of people during covid

You mean packed stadiums and lowest fatality rate in the Western World?

    Well the authoritarian woke bitch!!!🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,819 ✭✭✭✭Thelonious Monk

I don't know anything about how they handled it but on here and on the journal comments, two bastions of information, they always seem to slate her over her handling of covid. But yeah sounds like she did ok from what you're telling me.

You liked her because she was hated by some people.

I find this approach to politics odd.

    Really? What age are you?

Politics has always been essentially a popularity contest and still is.

Yes, I found it extremely funny that she drove incels and conspiracy loons nuts, Did you not?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,874 ✭✭✭Sunny Disposition

Isn't it awful horse sh!t? How would Tubs get a feel for the impact of her policies given that he lives in Ireland?

Again I'm not criticising Arden at all, I'm criticising people who praise her but who aren't humble enough to realise they haven't a clue how well or poorly she has done. She seems like a nice enough woman, but people on the other side of the world, myself included, don't know whether she has been effective or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,089 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

No I don't think you realise that you're in a minority view on that one.

Most people prefer consensus and don't really concentrate on the minority of nutters out there.

Your type of approach is part of the divisive rubbish that has come in from America.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,740 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

The country was sealed off from the rest of the world during COVID.

That allowed them to get on with it, but even a single case triggered a national lockdown, and it happened a few times.

Isolating the country from the rest of the world is a lot easier when you are an island in the Pacific, miles from anywhere.

What they did during COVID worked for them, but would not be applicable to somewhere like Ireland.

On the controlling ideas part, would you feel the same about, say, a government trying to prevent an Islamic terrorist group from trying to recruit people online? They're just expressing their right to free speech too, right?

Regarding Adhern, the internet culture war (which probably peaked around 2017) definitely created the perfect storm for her tenure, and massively increased the amount of international exposure she received. Depending on who you talked to she was either the greatest head of state in the world or an authoritarian dictator who stripped the liberties of her people entirely. In reality she seemed a fairly competent leader who handled certain crises well (the terrorist attack on the mosque, earthquake), and others badly (the Covid restrictions).

Tubs was even wetting himself when dealing Hillary Clinton, someone who'd be dubious enough to most people. Anyone who's bigger than him, and has a positive media profile, will be worshiped by him. He's a ladder climber, a status lover, so he thinks that kissing the right arses will help his own profile.

“The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than anyone else. You know it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn't it? A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it.”- ― Fyodor Dostoevsky, The Brothers Karamazov

i believe in free speech . you bring up a tricky point of Islamic terrorist group but is it incitement to harm others or just general raging.

I don't like the crime of "association" cos it sounds like thought-crime to me . Actions are different , commanding others to do physical harm is different.

She went much further than terrorism in her dislike for speech she didn't like. she was another clown that declared everything that was critical of her view on how society (esp western society) ran was "far right".

  • I assume she’s just deciding to move on and give whoever replaces her an opportunity to build profile before the next general elections in NZ.

She’s hardly going to want to do that job forever and she’s relatively young, so she’s not going to be PM and then just retire take up golf, as might be the case if you were leaving that role in your late 60s.

Seems like a sensible and non controversial way of moving on to whatever it is she takes to next.

    Fact Check

That allowed them to get on with it, but even a single case triggered a national lockdown, and it happened a few times.

That's not true, when there was confirmed community transmission various levels of restrictions were introduced in various geographic areas.

Virtually all their cases identified during that period of isolation after the initial spread was at the border.

By every single metric New Zealand relative to the rest of the Western World was the pinnacle of pandemic control.

Made possible by their isolation and also the trust in their governance.

Didn't hear many New Zealanders complaining when hospitals were functioning as normal or they were in 50,000 seater stadiums.

myopic lame response. covid (and her attitude) were so much more than a packed stadium,

Arguably the best world leader during the pandemic. I think history will record her tenure favourably. A shame to see her go.

Woke authoritarian pain in the arse loses stomach for it once the fake sheen wears off- who’d have seen that one coming? No doubt something big lined in the NGO set for afters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,656 ✭✭✭✭road_high

She’s a god like figure to the woke cult. We know how much obsessed they are with a respiratory virus.

  • The comparison with Ireland was ridiculous though. The circumstances were totally different.

Try doing the NZ thing while having an open border with the UK an hour north of Auckland. This was also at the time when UK was being run by Boris Johnson and Co and the DUP were driving NI covid policies. It’s also a border which is one of the most controversial in the world and closing it would be not only contentious but might even be physically dangerous.

Also Ireland is part of the EU - barely an hour and a bit flying time from cities like Paris, Amsterdam, integrated into the same air transit hubs, single market, common currency, freedom of movement rights had to be considered and balanced, supply chains depend on truckers and people moving around, so do many essential services.

There’s also an expectation that you can travel to / from endless European destination at the drop of a hat and very cheaply. That isn’t the case in NZ. It’s far more isolated and travel is fairly long haul. Even a flight to Australia isn’t particularly short. You’ve also family and social ties and commercial between neighbouring and easily accessible countries and all sorts of commercial, work, educational etc etc reasons people travel.

We are also a hop, skip and a jump away from and very cheaply connected to the Northeastern US, and those connections paused and the gate was closed long after the horse bolted.

They are similar populations on islands, with somewhat comparable climates, but they’re in radically different locations, circumstances, supply chains, transport networks, border control policies etc etc

I just remember a lot of smug and very unrealistic comparisons with NZ at the time.

    Ms

I liked her. She seemed like a good person had an open mind and always tried to do the right thing.

No idea how she is seen in NZ or what her policies or anything else were like there nor do I really care as I do not live there, have never been and never will be. Australia is the furthest I ever went. That was far enough. I used to think Australia and NZ were just like us with the UK just a short boat trip away but then I found out it was a good 5 hour flight just from Oz to NZ I thought feck that, that's crazy.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,752 ✭✭✭quokula

Comfortably the best handling of Covid in the western world, though it should be recognised that NZ's geographical location had more than a little to do with that and it's unlikely that any country with land borders could have achieved it, including us being stuck with the UK's basketcase policies in the north. I've a couple of good friends in NZ that I talk to regularly and they were able to get on with their lives comfortably throughout the pandemic and she's remained popular with them on other domestic matters too.

Like practically every other country on earth, NZ is currently hit by inflation due to energy prices and rising interest rates to combat that and these international issues have hit the governing party in the polls (though her personal polling is still fairly comfortably higher than any other party leader)
