It not MMA but did ye see Dana and Lorenzo are starting a slap fighting promotion out of the Apex after he got the NASC to regulate it. Its shameful from the NASC to be honest, its a stupid "sport" albeit entertaining but pure brain damage for the competitors. A full force undefended open palm strike to the jaw, they are regularly knocked out and concussed. Go look up slap fighting championship on youtube if you've never seen it, its crazy and of course originates from Russia.

This is just so so dumb!

Zuffa talk about all the years they spent trying to get MMA regulated and make it into a respectable sport......... and then they start this rubbish!

It just seems like such a back step, all the time spent cleaning up mma and they go promote this crap affiliated to the UFC. I think I read 2 people have already died from this.

The fact it will be overseen by NASC means greater medical supervision, but doctors who work on MMA are absolutely furious this got passed by the NASC and never expected it to.

Dana and Lorenzo, a right pair of slappers .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,685 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

It has nothing to do with Zuffa or MMA.

It's not affiliated to the UFC either.

    Lorenzo sold Zuffa in 2016

Sure, not Zuffa. I meant specifically Dana White.

But it's not true to say it has nothing to do with MMA. I'm sure you don't need that explained to you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,685 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

It's not related to the UFC or Zuffa in any way. The only link is that Dana is an investor. Which is pretty baseless. If Dana invested in a boxing club, boxing isn't suddenly part of Zuffa/UFC's remit.

It's absolutely retarded. Lets just let it be its on nonsense.

Not related to UFC or Zuffa? It's been run out of the Apex 😕

  • Registered Users Posts: 258 ✭✭It is a Dunne Deal

It's no more pointless and stupid than MMA to be fair and Dana likes a slap as we all know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,685 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

It's a venue. Makes sense to rent it out. The UFC runs events from T-Mobile. Doesn't mean MGM (or T Mobile) are related to the UFC. They just want the UFC money. As above, a boxing match in Apec doesn't make boxing part of the UFC.

It will probably be advertised on the next UFC event. Dana obviously wants to leverage the UFC for publicity. I would guess Endeavour had to approve of it, and probably even have money invested.

The point is that its an entirely separate entity. Unlike say Dana Whites Contender Series or TUF. Same wat that Lorenzo's casinos were not related to the UFC (when he was owner)

Dana White is front and centre of it.

It's advertised on every UFC event.

It's all over UFC Fight Pass.

It's taking place at the "UFC Apex".

Their website is full of MMA athletes and UFC employees promoting it. Daniel Cormier & Forrest Griffin both on the first page. I haven't seen any athletes from any other sports there.

It's all over the UFC social channels.

The UFC You Tube channel is full of videos as if this was an upcoming UFC event. One just 7 hours ago.

Just this morning I got a push notification form UFC Fight Pass advertising a "Road to the Title" video.

It's being spoken about by every MMA outlet and this very thread is on the MMA forum.

But yeah........... it has nothing to do with MMA!

Dana is using the UFC platform to promote it. Obviously he sees overlap in the fan base. That doesn't mean it is part of the sport of MMA. Modelo is also advertised at every UFC event. You know its not actually a UFC beer? You claimed ZUFFA set it up, that is simply factually incorrect. Cormier is a company shill. If Daddy Dana tells him to cut a promo, he'll do it. Expect others to do the same. This is jut marketing.

It is not part of the port of MMA. People are going to incorrectly associate it with MMA to criticise MMA. We shouldn't be doing that for them.

You can jump through as many mental hoops as you want but it's heavily associated with the UFC, making it heavily associated with MMA whether you like it or not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,340 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Well when you think MMA you think UFC, when you think UFC you think Dana White.

Founder - Dana White (president of the UFC)

President - Frank Lamicella (lead ufc legal counsel)

Matchmaker - Hunter Campbell (ufc vice president)

It is a UFC promotion in everything but name.

Anyway I watched it last night out of curiosity. Dana has polished it, given it the ultimate fighter format, referred to as a new sport constantly, the rules, the safety standards. Its still 2 lads landing undefended concussive blows on each other. The legitimacy of it as a sport falls immediately when a competitor gains a massive advantage by winning the coin toss to go first. You can knock out your opponent without you been hit over a coin toss.

The actually damaged they are taking is ridiculous, there is very few strikes in mma landed as cleanly as these. There is a few people to catch you when you fall but your eyes are in the back of your head and your stiff as a board.

Its not even that entertaining either, I was fairly bored of it by the end. Yes the strikes are shocking and you will react but where is the skill? The mystery of how someone will win?

    Ratings were pretty bad apparently.

Their lead-in was AEW Wrestling. Nearly 1m average viewers.

Power Slap got 295k average viewers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,825 ✭✭✭lertsnim

It has low ratings because most sensible people will see this for what it is. It's not entertainment. It's Dana White getting rich off people giving each other traumatic brain injuries.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,340 ✭✭✭✭rob316

The money is dreadful 2k + 2k. This is just entertainment for billionaire Dana white and Lorenzo Fertitta. He spends 100 times that in the casino weekly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,685 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

I’m surprised it’s that high. They don’t deserved to be paid anymore than that. Clowns

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,514 ✭✭✭Homelander

I would be lying if I said it has no entertainment value but it's totally ridiculous. It's actually the comments online afterwards that entertain me even more. When Kourtney Olson got KO'd and couldn't even stand up so sort of rolled, someone said "Slapped so hard she turned into Sonic the Hedgehog".

I got more entertainment from that comment and I still do every time I think about it.

It's a flawed concept anyway as someone has to go first, giving them an absolutely massive advantage. Notwithstanding that, it's just two people slapping each other, there's no dynamic to it whatsoever. I can't see any sort of a future in it.

I gave up after episode 2, it's the lengths they are going to making this a legit sport is ridiculous. I'd prefer if they called it what is, 2 lads slapping each other than running science experiments on the competitors in the PI.

  • Registered Users Posts: 416 ✭✭Robert Nairac

I think it's a fascinating sport. I am pleased to see the UFC cross-promoting it on their platforms so much. I'd like to see a Power Slap PPV within the next few months. It's a sport that will evolve greatly. It's here to stay.

Waylon Frost was robbed. Chris Thomas flinched right in front of all the refs and they did nothing.

Shock horror, one of the contestants has been suspended after testing positive for cocaine following his match. The majority of them seem to have psychological/emotional/addiction issues and its on Jeremy Kyle levels of exploitation

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,340 ✭✭✭✭rob316

It's hardly surprising the demographics of the fighters, you'd have to be fucked up to compete in this.

What's going on in the house is actually more entertaining than the "fights".

Ratings are crap anyway, NASC is taking a hammering and it's attracted the interest of Congress too. Don't see it lasting that long

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,340 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Lost it's time slot already, it's as good as done.

The statement was its nothing to do with the sport of MMA.

If people don’t grasp the difference they’ve probably taken too many power slaps themselves.

But if anyone enjoy it, knock themselves out. I think it’s retarded and not worth even acknowledging.
