Oh my, wait until you read into the person that reported her.

I didn't know Sterling is trans/non-binary now. Just a disclaimer before anyone jumps down my throat for saying Jim.

In other news: the latest AI tech from Nvidia might ensure your Twitch streams become a shade more uncomfortable, as hosts will never stop staring directly at you...

Yeah, came out maybe 2 years or so ago. Also an amateur wrestler now in the UK. To be honest I don't watch as much of their videos now as I used to, but just because they became fairly repetitive and unnecessarily longer (so therefore repetition within the videos themselves, not just repetition of topics). Feels like they do less of a deep dive into the topics by discussing or researching things, and instead just rant a bit more. But fair play to them, they seem a lot happier in general and seems to be doing really well with the amateur wrestling.

With all the advancement in technology that brought us to this AI revolution, this is what it will be used for.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I'm glad they feel happier with their own personal lives, but I had to unsubscribe because the constant staring into the abyss that informed their videos, coupled with the wrestling stuff, put me right off. Stoped enjoying their humour and subjects when it was just despairing rant after another. Negativity definitely drives clicks and views on the internet - but balance is important for "serious" creators IMO.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 29,752 CMod ✭✭✭✭johnny_ultimate

I actually was quite a fan of Sterling's reviews and 'Jimpressions' videos - quite entertaining and always brutally honest. But yeah the Jimquisition rants - which are now the bulk of the content - are very one-note and I barely watch any of their stuff anymore alas. I think an important part of criticism is to explore why things are good as much as why things are bad, otherwise you can just sort of get locked into a negativity vortex where it's just endlessly complaining about how everything is awful. Endless good games out there that need attention more than the world needs another Square-Enix rant or whatever the case may be (as much as I believe in holding those shite companies to account).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,294 ✭✭✭✭Penn

They have pointed out on Twitter a lot previously that the majority of positive videos they do get less than half the views of the negative ones, and so they'd do the occasional positive one but just had to veer more towards the negative ones. It's why I began watching more Jimpressions videos instead, as they'd usually be playing/reviewing a game they wanted to play and enjoyed rather than just complaining for 15 minutes that Randy Pitchford said something. But even the Jimpressions videos fell by the wayside as Sterling began focusing more on the wrestling stuff. Even the Jimquisition videos often start or end with clips from their wrestling performances now.

Turns out that making sure your console is more energy efficient thus costing your users less on energy bills is bad.

Yep I miss their reviews as they were often well put together criticisms, despite being totally wrong about Breath of the Wild. And they were one of the first people to extoll the virtues of Deadly Premonition while pointing out David Cage as a hack.

It's just insane that people that support the far right can't get it into their thick heads that they are just being totally played by big oil and business. When the hell has saving people a bit of money and doing the bare minimum to reduce the impact on an existential climate crisis, which becomes harder and harder to deny each year, been about 'woke'. And woke has now lost all meaning and become a buzz word the right use to label anything they don't agree with and set the baying masses against.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Thing is, we clicked the link. We scanned the article; Fox News just gleaned exactly what it wanted from us - minus perhaps the "engagement" of comments and retweets (there at least, Board is too small to count).

Outrage Culture is an industry now and Fox masters of the game; I've rarely believed Tucker Carlson truly believes half the bile he spews outside of actual political concepts - he's just aware of the monetary success it brings him and his employer to cause the audience to simmer with fear or rage. It wasn't that hard to spin environmental concern as something "woke" given it has often struggled to escape the gravity well of "hippy"

I don't especially like the guy's routine, but Russell Howard nailed the intent of the entire machine within media of that ilk:

I am sure it will be combined with random movements and it won't be so direct 100% of the time, but in order to be able to make it more natural you need to have this 100% on target baseline.

0.5 Watt energy consumption, still boots up really fast and still downloads your updates. Nothing to see here....

So stuff I didn't know about this Goldeneye remake.

Seems that the game on switch is being released exclusively on their premium subscription model and will be part of the N64 games collection. It's basically a port of the N64 game.

On XBox it's more of a remaster, it runs in 4K, 60 FPS and there might be touch ups to the graphics.

Even better is that it's being added retroactively to the Rare Replay collection. That 10 euro I spent on that collection is one of the best bargains ever and still paying off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,422 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

It's full screen too on XBox ( 16:9 Vs 4:3 ) I believe. Pierce Brosnan was lucky this game exists. Makes it look like he's the definitive James Bond. For some reason this game is more appealing to me than e.g. Halo Infinite. Maybe because it's more believable and less cluttered and busy. I did play it on N64 back in the day, but never finished it.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,886 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

When I said port or switch I meant ROM running in emulator so 16:9 is a bit of an ask.

Would not pay for it but nice that I effectively own it on Xbox.

So will setting off loads of proximity mines get the framerate down to single digits, for a more genuine experience?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

That's why I've stuck with outlets like Kotaku: I know they're not to everyone's taste re. ideologies or perspectives, and their pivot to autoplay videos can go die in a fire (alongside other decisions made after the last takeover)... but they still remember games are a fun pastime with lots of reasons to be joyful about them; same going for all the various aspects tangential to gaming culture. While at the same time running semi-regular commentaries and articles about the less celebratory aspects of gaming. Their horniness also never fails to amuse. I would jump ship if I could find somewhere better, but equivalent.

But Sterling was just constant, 24/7 misery porn. Even his Jimpressions had kinda become really tetchy, and sounded like they were forcing anything resembling a positive opinion into the commentary. Negativity is contagious, and it can be very seductive to just keep moaning. They may have made some empowering personal choices but I had sometimes wondered about their overall state of mind.

So that end: it probably wasn't a coincidence that around the time I unsubscribed from Sterling, I instead subscribed to this happy little channel. Fun little indies, with an emphasis on ... well, wholesomeness.

I gave up on Sterling after their toxic videos resulted in death threats being sent to developers. Sterling turned around and said they can't be blamed for what their fans do. Knowing full well that every target if their video set their toxic fan base on the Devs.

The only thing I've agreed on is that BOTW is a bang on 7/10.

I do love People Make Games, not least cos their presenter has such a calm, chilled presence, even when talking about exploitation or whatnot. Very relaxing, warm voice.

Their latest is all about Valve's work culture. I hadn't realised, and maybe it was common knowledge, they had a "flat" structure where nobody has job titles and you basically make your own work, employees do evaluations and so on. It sounds a bit batty TBH and the video elaborates how slanted the thing is ... but it also goes some way to suggest why they produce so few games; there must be tonnes of prototypes and vertical slices abandoned by employees just pivoting to some other distraction.

So I have played it on the switch there. Does it play a bit better on Xbox? I know it was designed for the n64 controller but it’s a bit clunky on the switch

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,422 ✭✭✭SuperBowserWorld

It's got better controls, i.e. regular FPS controls. I haven't tried it yet as I've packed away my consoles for a bit, to try and help me get other things done. 🥴🥴🥴

As a PlayStation player during that era I always remember being jealous of this game. Really disappointing that Xbox version doesn’t have multiplayer. Timesplitters 2 ended up kind of filling the multiplayer gap on ps2 if I recall.

Why would they set up a gofundme though?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,910 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Died of cancer (at only 45) and knowing US healthcare system, probably racked up a debt from treatment. Only a guess, who knows.

Edit: reading the gofundme page, sounds more like a friend letting her husband not worry about work for a while while grieving with 3 young kids.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭The Raging Bile Duct

Beingr America, it's probably because any money the family had was wiped out by medical bills

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,309 ✭✭✭✭wotzgoingon

I understand but it's up to the common man to pay for her family what happens the common woman who has cancer and dies nobody would pay for her expenses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,294 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah the Gofundme page says medical and funeral costs, as well as college costs for the kids and to allow her husband time off work for the kids (3 sons 12 and under).

Even though they're both actors in TV, neither was that hugely prolific in their work that they'd be easily financially secure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,294 ✭✭✭✭Penn

It's not up to the common man to pay for her family. You don't have to pay. They put up the GFM and people, if they have the means to do so, can donate a little bit if they want.

If the common woman dies of cancer, their family can also set up a GFM. A lot of celebrities retweet requests from people to advertise the GFM for donations (possibly also donating themselves, I don't know).

In an ideal world, there'd be robust social safety nets in place to ensure families looking after their sick loved ones or in the midst of a tragic loss would not have to worry about massive medical bills or being unable to afford time off. Ireland has a way to go in that regard, but it's progressive compared to the nightmare that is the US. That so many tragedies lead to crowdfunding campaigns is a testament to a failed system - but also a testament to how frequently communities can rally together to support those in need. It shouldn't be needed, and yes unfortunately lower profile or 'ordinary' people have a much greater challenge actually raising money that way. But for the most part (scams aside) it's about a failed system rather than individual people taking financial advantage of tragedy.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Even in Ireland death is expensive. Funeral costs are not something people think of til you're having to organise a loved ones remains being taken care per their wishes, presumed or otherwise. There are few more surreal moments in our lives than discussing invoices and options while utterly shellshocked. How much a plot of land will cost, how much the hearse will cost, will it be catered? Etc. Etc.

I can't even imagine how much more punitive those costs might be in America, coupled with healthcare costs that would already be crippling - especially to a jobbing actor far from the stratosphere of fame. If we lived in America myself and my wife would be impoverished and worse, due to the medicine she needs just to live a functional life. Our social medicine scheme keeps the medicine's cost to an affordable ceiling every month - otherwise it's be 1000s.

So I get the urge to set up funding pages and letting the community of fans help. It's a nice reminder that as factional and shítty as pop culture has become, Sci-Fi fandom was always tightly knit and communal in its approach.

Any one playing the new Hitman feature, Freelancer? They've very cleverly turned it into a roguelite. You start off with just a basic gun, no tools at all, and are given a list of targets spread across the world that you have to work through. Not having access to many of the basic tools that you'd normally rely on, like silenced pistols or lockpicks, dramatically changes the game. The possibility of losing the equipment that you brought on the level with you makes everything a lot more tense.

All in all, a very good free addition to an already great game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,294 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I've redownloaded the game. Might be a while before I get to it though, but definitely interested to see how it plays. A big part of Hitman was the carefully designed levels, which give interesting and unique ways to take out the targets through playing the levels over and over again to find all the clues and info you need. How that translates to a roguelike will certainly be interesting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,910 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

I didn't get Hitman 3 yet but it's still on my list and tbh, the Freelancer mode appeals to me more than the campaign. The campaign has excellent little story beats you can follow but I felt like I was just trying to complete objectives instead of actively trying to kill the target. Obviously i can turn those hints off but then i feel like I'm missing interesting ways to kill, kind of a catch 22 with me. I think i had the most fun with those timed assassinations where you'd have a few days to 1 author to identify and kill a target. Serious tension and making stuff up on the fly instead of following a story beat. I think that's why I'd like freelancer. Also, sounds class building a hitmansion.

Edit: just saw the new Hitman bundle is 70 euro but 38 for ps plus until Thursday. Hhmm.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,294 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I always just saw it as an additional puzzle aspect to the game. You could make your way to the target, wait til they're alone, then kill them and escape. But, by following all the hints and clues, and surveying the target more and more to work out their routes, you can pull off very slick (and often just funny) ways of killing them without even being near them. By that stage, chances are you've already killed them a bunch of ways in between while doing to level to find all the info anyway.

But the Freelancer mode does sound like it'll keep you always on your toes rather than knowing exactly who'll be where and when.

I was looking for a game where you could go exploring an island, find treasure, etc and then I saw this tweet and now I'm thinking I want to play Far Cry 6 again even though I remember getting bored to tears from the story missions. Anyone familiar with Ubisoft play/plus/whatever and any idea when 6 might be joining it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,517 ✭✭✭marcbrophy

It's part of Ubisoft plus, has been since release day!

GOTY edition is now available through it :)

    Games are listed here!

EDIT: I just realised that you probably mean the Ubi+ classics on PS+ :D

Sorry, it's not in that collection right now!

Ah so PlayStation gets the classic versions and that just recently got far cry 5 and dawn games so 6 is probably a good bit out.

Yeah, looks like it's a curated list of games for PS, so that they don't get the latest releases basically!

Shíte, you could be waiting a while!

Ooh Prey on Series X with fps boost is sweet. I also played Dishonoured which is very smooth on series x with fps boost.

Strangely, Dishonoured 2 didnt get fps boost and is janky af, so much so that I had to abandon it. And the lag on it on xcloud is ridiculous. It's normally bad on 30fps but seems especially bad on Dishonoured 2.

Pretty sure it was a post from yourself that had me importing my copy at the time, was unlike any other action game back then, in a good way. Funny enough, I took the PS3 out of storage last week so my eldest could see what Demon Souls was like. He’s recently gotten into From games starting off with Sekiro, Elden Ring and now playing through Bloodborne - he loves them much to my surprise and delight. 😁
