How did Germany get screwed by Russia?

anyone care to explain in detail?

  • Registered Users Posts: 728 ✭✭✭20Wheel

    A brief synopsis will do.

Edit: 8 hrs. No synopsis received. Possibly someone is allergic to facts. So heres the thing, Germany benefitted for almost 50 years from cheap Russian oil, gas.

    Made a fortune.

The savings must have reached the high hundreds of billions. Germany benefitted from such savings since the world trade center was just opening. Since disco. Probably a decade before Gordon Gecko had a brick phone.

This will also have led to increased investment. Aside from the huge monetary savings.

Thats Germany getting "screwed" according to some.

Potentially yes, killing an M1 would be a boost for the Russians…but they might have to ignore the scores of T-Series tanks that were likely destroyed in the attempt.

The only rationality I can find in the overall German and French position is the fear of a collapsed Russia with two nuclear armed factions emerging in its wake. That would be a bad result for humanity. The current homogenous Russia is probably better than that hypothetical balkanised Russia. Sending huge amounts of heavy armour to Ukraine does increase the likelihood of that scenario. But that does not excuse the unwillingness to send any tanks.

I did notice a change in tactic on here over the last few pages,

Living here is grim , they are alive and living in a safe country, could be a hell of a lot worse, they could be in a trench in Ukraine, dead

It looks that way to me too --

Feign disarray, then suddenly a comprehensive shopping list gets ticked off

Let the "master strategist" sit back stroking his cat while the Ukrainians envisage their next creative move

The U.S. vehicles, probably numbering at least 30, are unlikely to arrive by spring, when Russian forces are expected to begin a new offensive and Ukraine plans to launch its own counteroffensive to take back Russian-occupied territory. Instead, the Abramses are “probably not for the near fight,” one U.S. official said, and are not likely to arrive for many months, if not years.

The US do enough to entice all Leopard holders to empty their reserves, but will we actually see Abrams handed over in a reasonable timeframe?

Should be a good decade ahead for General Dynamics anyways, no shortage of customers after this!

Ukraine will figure this out and I am very confident of this. They are fighting for their lives against the orc rapists. They are highly motivated.

  • Registered Users Posts: 394 ✭✭Bitcoin

Another orc attack ends in disaster. 5 tanks destroyed and probably dozens of casualties.

Farmers in Russia will be told what they can and can't plant and where and how much.

The view from Australia is this is a positive for Australian farmers.

This will come across as very pedantic, but considering the recent conversations about Main Battle Thanks etc, it's worth pointing out those are IFV (Infantry Fighting Vehicles) not tanks.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭Curious_Case

I wonder could old Soviet tanks (possibly surplus to requirements) have their steering & throttle locked and be pointed at Russian lines of defence.

Bear in mind that it would be a hell of a lot easier for a tracked vehicle to stay on course than a wheeled one.

Difficult to miss a trench line.

The implications are obvious, pack with remotely detonated explosives, maybe even use some as decoys.

Russia will now probably speed up their planned offensives North, South & East since they know once these beasts arrive it will be a game changer.

The ability of these tanks, mixed with Bradleys, longer range artillery and rockets, possible F-series fighter craft will create a powerful combined arms effect. Once up and going this could be the turning point to force the Russians back.

We have posters here who have experience on some battle tanks, my knowledge is limited, but Ive heard the Abrams are high maintenance (like an ex of mine), im presuming, if these get the go ahead, there will be some repair or resupply bases in Poland?

a very very expensive suicide bomber

and very easy for anybody in that trench to hit it themselves from a distance as the tank approaches in a straight line

they already have suicide drones that can be laden with explosives and piloted with extreme accuracy not only into trenches, but adjusted so that they strike individual people directly.

Hopefully it forces them to move too soon, ill prepared, and ultimately hasten their own demise.

I don't think "pea brain" is a match for relaxed, insightful experts, acting in near unison.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭Curious_Case

Didn't they "acquire" many from the Russians?

Perhaps they're good for little else?

Perhaps old Soviet ammunition is running low anyway?

Easy targets? - good, keep the enemy artillery busy.

A tank can carry far more explosives than a drone.

The EU has banned all Russian aircraft from EU airspace already.

About f-ing time Ukraine are finally getting their tanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,028 ✭✭✭timmyntc

    Its a profoundly stupid idea.

Any tanks captured from Russia should be refurbed and re-used - as tanks - because the Ukrainians have vast experience operating these types of vehicles.

Filling a tank with explosives and sending it, unguided in a (hopefully) straight line toward enemy entrenched positions is just idiotic. A tank with no operator and incapable of doing what tanks do best (firing from distance) is just a magnet for enemy fire. And if its full of explosives it'll go up pretty quick.

All they really would have to do is blow the tracks off and there you go, threat neutralised. Such a waste of a tank that could otherwise be used quite effectively by the UA army

    Yes, it would appear so.

    Hopefully.

Although unfortunately Im not hearing much in the way of any news regarding Abrams arriving any time soon.

Could it be that Leopards will be on the ground well before any Abrams? That would make for some delicious discussion.

Are the Americans scholzing now? Or should that be Austin-ing? If Scholz gets the job done first.

I wonder if there was russian money involved in the EUs decision to shut down our sugar beet industry. Russian sugar beet production has doubled in 15 years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭Curious_Case

I'm not sure that it's wise to overlook the inherent design flaws, they can't be refurbed away.

Investing in technologically surpassed tanks seems profoundly stupid to me.

Not to mention the obvious shift towards Western ammunition.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,028 ✭✭✭timmyntc

Ukraine have fielded these tanks for the entirety of their existence as an independent state.

They have the knowledge, ability and facilities to maintain and repair these vehicles, and to crew them effectively.

Turning them into dumb unguided slow suicide bomb tanks is a stupid waste of tanks

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,266 ✭✭✭thomil

Interestingly, the Sky News report leaves out the most interesting part of the press release. Namely, those 14 tanks are just a first step, the eventual aim is to equip Ukraine with two battalions' worth of Leopard 2, which would be around 100 tanks once both are fully stood up. I'm not sure how many of those will come out of Bundeswehr units or depots, and how many will be provided by German arms manufacturers, but reading the press release, it looks like Scholz has gone from one extreme to another. Not that I mind.

German government press release (German): Bundesregierung kündigt Lieferung von Leopard-2-Panzern an die Ukraine an

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

In that case Kaliningrad is cut off totally. This could have very nasty consequences, and at the moment better to leave the place alone provided that it's not used to facilitate aggression, in which case all bets are off.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭Curious_Case

    They didn't have better options.

You could say the same about Soviet battle techniques.

Stupid it may be, but I've yet to see why.

Don't forget, the Ukrainians aren't particularly fond of those old tanks.

If a russian naval ship escorts russian ships through the GOFREP area - what are Estonia going to do about it?

‼️Overview of tank deliveries to Ukraine right now:

    Confirmed:

    🇬🇧 14 Challenger 2

    🇵🇱 14 Leopard 2A4

    🇩🇪 14 Leopard 2A6

    Pending full confirmation:

    🇵🇹 4 Leopard 2A6

    🇪🇸 20-53 Leopard 2A4

    🇺🇸 30 Abrams M1

    🇳🇴 8 Leopard 2A4

    🇫🇮 14 Leopard 2A4/6

    Discussion:

    🇳🇱 18 Leopard 2A6

    🇩🇰 6 Leopard 2A5/7

A nice oveview of who's promissed what or is thinking it over. I wish Albanese would hand over Australia's surplus 59 Abrams. Not doing so amounts to dog in the mangerism.

Unfortunately it's well shy of the 300 needed.
