I remember someone a couple of years ago posting a zoomed-in freeze-frame of a player standing in an offside position relative to the defender, and saying "see, he's clearly in an offside position". The freeze-frame didn't have the passer of the ball, or the ball itself, in the picture! I suspected that if you zoomed-out for the entire picture, you'd see the ball in mid-air, long after it's left the passers boot.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 9,645 Mod ✭✭✭✭mayordenis

So you can do the freeze frames here yourself, the only possible reason Nunez could be ONSIDE is if your interpretation of a change of phase of play is any touch at all. The first header after the corner nunez is offside, after the flick on he would be onside only if you count that as a change in the phase of play. It's clear enough that to me that this is offside.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,441 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hammer Archer

If I'm not mistaken, of course the second flick on is a new phase. If a forward is in an offside position from a keeper playing a long ball forward but is then onside from a flick on, the linesman isn't going to flag the player due to him being offside from the initial ball forward from the 'keeper. Nunes wasn't interfering in play when the initial cross is headed out and isn't offside when the ball is then headed by Hwang.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 9,645 Mod ✭✭✭✭mayordenis

Look I might be wrong, but the interpretation of the rule has never been that every single touch is a new phase of play. I don't remember ever hearing an exact definition but it has imo not been that every touch resets offside.

I would have thought that Cardiff (and Sheff Wed yesterday) would have had much better crowds.

Though they just said Cardiff haven't had a 20k+ crowd this season.

Great save !! By the defender first, clear Red card, and then the keeper keeps Cardiff ahead, 2-1 with 10 to go.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,067 ✭✭✭✭martingriff

In fairness that second goal is deserved given they would have had one from the handball. That is the only arisen when a penalty kick is given I think a goal should be automatically given

Injury time goal gives Leeds another chance, they really looked to be going out.

Well done to Stevenage, 1-0 down away to Aston Villa, in the 88th minute they drew level and got the winner in injury time.

Hugely embarrassing defeat for Emery and Villa as they lose at home to league 2 Stevenage.

Tuchel to Potter was a terrible downgrade. Would Potter have been hyped up the way he was if he wasn't English? I doubt it.

When are the exact times of the next round likely to be announced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Woukd they need to wait for replays to be done?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,286 ✭✭✭✭citytillidie

Times will be given out this week, replays are a week and a half before the 4th round so tv will be sorted before then.

They were in shite form under tuchel too and they've an absolutely nonsensical approach to recruitment. Even under roman they had a bit of a plan.

Seems to have gone to pieces of late for Chelsea. Great to see!

Would think that with Christopher Vivell brought in recently as director of football that their signings will start to make a bit more sense, rather than just having Boehly randomly splashing piles of cash around.

Liverpool will be very happy to get the win from a very tricky fixture, especially with the team they had out. The game will be remembered for Elliott's goal and a phone pre-match, not much else.

A very nice goal by Gnonto to put Leeds ahead, he looks like a really good player.

2 quickfire goals makes it 3-0 to Leeds, another for Gnonto, he is looking better and better the more I see of him.

Looking forward to the game in a half an hour.

City have gone fairly strong, only 2 changes.

Arsenal with 6 changes, Trossard starting.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,080 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

Did anyone else notice that the FA cup game tonight was listed on ITV3/4 in Ireland but is not being shown now?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,634 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Is Arteta protecting Arsenal, being a little cautious or even cowardly with his selection?

Looks like he's afraid to expose his first team to City - if they lose now he can protect them by saying 'ah we made 6 changes' and if they do well then they do well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Maybe there's a little bit of that - but as league leaders if you can't rotate in the FA Cup 4th round, when can you rotate? Even against City, this game is less important to them than any other game scheduled for the whole rest of the season.

Don't think any City player checked to see how Haaland was.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,194 ✭✭✭Jarhead_Tendler

Trossard looks so dangerous every time he gets the ball. So tricky

Beautifully passed goal by Ake, really nicely finished.

He also looks kind of weird

Bit late to be responding but AFAIK anything broadcast on premier is not shown on any ITV channel in Ireland

Saka was completely non existent tonight.

How many fouls is Haaland allowed before he's booked.

I've no problem with Holding getting a yellow for persistent fouling and pulling, but Haaland is constantly at it, and no punishment.
