    Not too sure what the story is with commercial stuff but if you are vat registered here, I'd imagine you need to be buying a vat qualifying vehicle in the north. If it's a northern registered before 2021, you would only have to pay vrt. Vat would be handled in normal way through your business.

    Hi,

    Im looking to import a 2020 Ford focus. Vrt is low as C02 is 97 g/km, Nox is also low

    How do I check the car is a NI car? Is it on the V5 cert - I need to make sure it's the original correct?

    Can someone explain the remaining steps?

    Saw something about a customs broker?

    Where do I pay vrt?

    Do I need to NCT it, will I be in a mad waiting list?

    Basically I need an ELI5, link to previous post is grand.

    You can get a VRT appointment within a few days. Theres additional charges if you wait until over 30 days

    Hi looking for some help, I’m sure it’s been fully covered here so directing me to the post should do. I’ve imported cars from the Uk a few times but not since the new NOX / duty charges,

    looking to import:


    Vehicle 1: 2015 i20 1.2 petrol 60k miles. UK value £2500

    vehicle 2: 2013 VW transporter Kombi Crew cab. UK value £8500

    I’ve done the VRT calculator but not sure on duty etc

    Could someone give me an estimate of cost to have these on Irish plates all in. I’ve heard it doesn’t make sense anymore

    You will ha e to pay vat at 23 percent of the UK price.

    Duty at 10 percent of the UK price then vrt and nox tax on the car.

    I'd suggest for the car certainly that you should be able to source a car as common as that in the north and therefore avoid the vat and duty. Once car is registered in NI prior to brexit, those 2 charges don't apply.

    Hi, I’m looking at buying a 1987 car in UK for £5000 and bringing it back to Ireland. I understand the VRT is only €200 for a car this age, but then there is a VAT charge and customs duty and NOx charge.

    A few questions:

    Do all charges apply to a car this old?

    Do I need to use a specialist company to make any customs declarations or pre-boarding notification?

    Would there be any point in bringing it in via the north?

    Does anyone know how the OMSP is calculated?

    This car is 25-29k on carzone.

    Direct euro cost is €20k (£17.5k) without vrt+Nox....is that the figure they are using?

    Will I get a bigger VRT bill if they check the OMSP?

    The OMSP calculation is explained in your screenshot. Its the new retail price minus depreciation. Each car is allocated a depreciation formula.

    If your car is just a normal every day car then its unlikely Revenue will check for the actual OMSP

    How can I get proof of the first registration date in NI ?

    The car I'm looking at had a registration change in 2022 from it's original 2019 NI reg to the current NI reg. I assume I need some form of evidence to prove it was originally NI reg, and didnt come from UK. I only have a carcheck report showing the dates & registrations ?

    Is there some official DVLA type document I need to get hold of ?

    Sorry for all the Q's.

    Current OMSP is 16k there, that's way too low....

    I'm sensing there are some undercooked valuations and I'll have to risk it if I really want to save the €4/5k.

    Its low because the depreciation formula doesn’t account for the massive inflation in car prices lately. Every other car is the same. Only expensive high end cars have accurate OMSP’s. Or cars that have to be sent to Revenue for a manual calculation.

    If its a normal every day car that gets imported regularly then thats usually the price you’ll pay. As long as you’ve entered all the details correctly.

    The VRT on any car is based on the OMSP as determined by Revenue, so it is automatically used in the calculation.

    Considering buying a 2013 Porsche in NI for £32k so trying to get a very rough idea of how much Vrt I might pay. If I assume omsp of say €50k and co2 and nox values at the highest level would I be right to assume 41% co2 charge ( so €20k roughly) plus whatever the nox charge would be or is that too simplistic ? Thanks.

    Curious if anyone has successfully brought in a 530e (I’m looking at 2019) recently that was worth the effort/saving?

    Is there any NI or UK VAT qualifying UK dealer / route that is better than ROI?


    NI dealer that hasn’t jacked up the prices seems to be the most obvious but do they exist??

    Also how does it work with insurance and tax? If you pick up the car in NI how can you drive it back to the South ? Or do you do it and then park it up until vrt and irish plates are sorted the insure?

    and what about nct? is that done at vrt?

    Revenue seem to have v low values for Ford Focus for some reason- but if your car matches the spec they have on the system that is all you will pay.

    Because they don’t have any VRT. Some cars here have to pay up to 40% VRT

    Northern Ireland is apart of the UK. UK and NI don’t pay VRT when they buy brand new cars

    A brand new car thats purchased in Ireland could have up to 40% VRT added on, bumping the price up to €70,000.

    Whereas in the UK and NI there is no VRT, meaning a €50,000 car is sold at €50,000

    Lower VAT too. We’re charged VAT and VRT on any extras that you spec on a new car. Double tax for a leather interior, your Harmon Kardon sound system etc.

    Different market, different demand but for the most part, cars from NI are now no cheaper once vrt is factored in.

    Hi all,

    There is a NI reg car for sale in Drogheda. It seems this person sells a few NI cars.

    They sent me part of the V5C and the date of first registration checks out as January 2020.

    It looks like the V5C they sent is one they received after buying the vehicle (V5C dated Jan 2023).

    Its has the same plate since first date of registration.

    I've a couple of questions (sorry for one of them, I know it's been asked to death)

    1) With the given info above, do I need anything other than the V5c to ensure customs and vat aren't charged? They didn't send any part of the V5C that has current and previous registered keeper information.

    2) Does the seller seeming to be based in Drogheda be an issue?

    I don't know why I find NI imports such a headmelt, I'm sure experienced posters here are sick of answering similar to question 1.

    Theres no previous keeper details on V5 logbooks anymore since GDPR.

    The car being based in Drogheda would be an issue but you can just make a hand written receipt from a NI address. You’ll have to make a handwritten receipt anyway unless the seller will give you a NI address receipt.

    I honestly couldn’t give solid advice on it. I was under the impression that if the car has a NI reg plate then this proves it was first registered in NI and shouldn’t attract VAT or customs, but Ive seen other poster’s disagree

    Thank you for that. I've contacted revenue to see what's what.

    Anyone else with experience of this?

    A dealer has a 2022 I'm interested in and they address is on the V5. I'll do some digging!
