I'll get this sometime down the line. Not sure what the difference between PS5 and XBox Series X, but I'd imagine bug fixes, performance, content will all be about equal in a year or so. I'm sure Digital Foundry are about to publish a video any moment. Also, will be cheaper in a year or so 😁

I think it’s unfair to expect everyone to conform to an opinion on this game - everyone has their own lines, and I don’t agree with the suggestion that people who buy or play this are automatically endorsing her views (even if Rowling herself might think her continued success represents tacit endorsement). But I also think it’s unfair to dismiss or mock people who are genuinely uncomfortable with the game - yes, there’s always going to be a level of excess when it comes to this kind of stuff, but Rowling’s stance has genuinely hurt a lot of people - in particular trans people - to whom HP used to mean a lot. There are plenty of people and indeed outlets who legitimately don’t feel comfortable supporting Harry Potter stuff any more. I appreciate, for example, that Rock Paper Shotgun is using this week to signal boost magic-themed indie games and trans creators instead of giving Hogwarts even more media space (it hardly needs it anyway, as a near-guaranteed mega blockbuster).

Again, yes boycotting or ignoring this game is a small, personal stance - it seems certain the game is going to sell many millions of copies regardless. Yes, some of the opposition to anyone buying the game has been hyperbolic. But yes, I also think it’s worth respecting those who feel Rowling has crossed a line - and she really has been relentless in her rhetoric, almost exclusively using her huge social media platform for that purpose - and don’t want to further add to the hype and sales for this one big-budget AAA game as a result. And it’s hardly like a boycott of Fantastic Beasts would make a difference, since nobody cares about that series in the first place 😂

Doesn't PS5 have some exclusive content or other? Not sure I'd base a purchasing decision on that either way though!

Even just leaving the whole trans/Rowling debate to the side, the game just looks fairly bland. Some of the movies had nice moments, but other than that I'd have very little interest in the franchise. Can't imagine I would have bothered with the game at all regardless of the trans/Rowling thing.

But, I think there's a definite over-reaction from some regarding those who do decide to play/review/stream the game. Nearly all big reviews have denounced Rowling's views, state their oppostion to her views, direct readers towards trans support charities etc. Some streamers who are playing the game are planning to donate earnings from those streams to trans charities etc. Ultimately, playing or reviewing the game shouldn't be considered support for Rowling, even if Rowling herself might consider a positive response as support for herself (because funnily enough she doesn't consider the negative response to the Fantastic Beasts films as a lack of support for herself). Nothing to do with the game, either financially, critically or just sales figures, is going to move her needle or result in an increase or decrease in support for her.

But streamers are facing abuse for just playing the game, such as GirlfriendReviews, and I think that's just pretty sh*tty.

She said that women have periods and the response was that "trans rights" heads dropped pornographic images into the ickabog thread on twitter where she was giving away a book for free to keep small kids entertained during lockdown, then threatened to rape and kill her and her children.

I for one am pretty comfortable in which side of the "harmful" fence she's on.

Boycotts like this can have a huge Streisand Effect. I have it installed now and ready to go and I wasn't particularly interested in the first place. Hopefully I can cancel out at least one abusive boycott eejit.

Edit: that might have come across slightly wrong, I wasn't calling people who are boycotting the game eejits, I was calling the people who are abusing folks for playing the game eejits - subtle but important difference, boycott whatever you want! 😀

I was actually a little shocked when I read your post before the edit 😅 Spite buying a game to stick it to the trans folk would certainly be a… choice 😅

Anybody stump up the extra tenner or so for the deluxe edition to start playing this evening?

Won't pass judgement on people buying this or wanting to play it. I do think there are ways to play this without giving jk rowling any money, just waiting a little while and pick it up second hand. Would just feel a bit hypocritical of myself to give her any money.

I do think streamers really need to think about where they stand on streaming this game. It's probably the game that will generate them the most revenue at the moment but any streaming they do is promoting sales of the game that they are responsible for. I think it's a bit rich of any of them to claim they are for trans rights and still stream this game. I'd rather they didn't lie about it and just say they are playing it as it will generate more revenue for them.

Picked this up on the psn on cheap on psn turkey store.

its a serious collectathon. Similar to those assassin creed rpg games.

Comments like this from Rowling herself don't help matters

This is a good article from a writer about how supporting the game is considered harmful to the trans community.

I don't think it's a simple argument either way. Buying/playing the game is unlikely to change anyone's opinion on anything to do with the trans debate. The very fact it's Harry Potter means it'll still sell incredibly well (though given the performance of the recent Fantastic Beasts films, it seems that star is waning already). Even the anti-trans people or Rowling herself are likely to just claim any poor sales are down to the trans lobby and wokists etc and so however many copies they did sell means she still has strong support regardless.

But yes, Rowling herself has tacitly implied that the royalty cheques from the HP franchise gives her comfort while propagating her anti-trans rhetoric. So not feeding any more money into those cheques is a way of showing support for trans people.

Hah! Yeah I'm a cranky old shite but not quite that cranky yet. 🤣

I did indeed, CD Keys had a bit of a nice deal at 24% cheaper than Steam for a Steam key (came to about 52 euro)

Looking forward to giving it a go a little later.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,408 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Yeah that's where I was looking too. Saving a few bob compared to the Steam price. You got a chance to play it yet?

All I'll say is thank god Saudi Arabia has a steller LGBTQ+ rights record so we don't have to boycott BOTW2 over their 6% ownership of Nintendo.

I still fail to see what this game has to do with trans rights.

I think that article is garbage, tbh.

I'll be buying this game and I'm not going to feel guilty about it, not for a second. Am I a transphobe? The author seems to imply that I am, though seems to lack the fortitude to actually call out in the article that this is what they believe.

I don't understand why absolutely everything in life has to be about making some wider point. It's a game I want to play, I'll buy it. There are hundreds, if not thousands of people involved in making this game who are not called J.K. Rowling. The idea is that we're all supposed to shaft them for the sin of making a game about one of the biggest book and movie franchises ever? Nonsense IMO.

Ignoring this game will make absolutely no difference whatsoever to the life of J.K. Rowling, nor will it make any difference whatsoever to trans rights. What it will do is make an impact on the normal people who made this game.

This is cancel culture at it's absolute very worst. If people want to help promote LGTB+ rights I'm sure there are better and more effective methods than boycotting this game.

Absolutely nothing imo. They've distanced themselves from her but you can't remove her legal rights to get money from anything Harry Potter related.

I'm actually going to suggest we keep that conversation out of this thread so as to not derail it, regardless of your stance on it. Let's just use this to discuss the game and create a separate thread if people want to continue discussing that angle.

I didn't know Steam had to unpack preloaded games, in all my years using it I haven't actually preloaded a game before! Currently at 50Gb and waiting..

I'm going back to my 2 year old comment on this because I knew this would happen.

The people who developed this game are not "anti trans". Nor are the people buying it. Nor are the people selling it. From the start, it was obvious that this game would become another attack point whereby misogynistic lunatics would try and use it as another test of whether they would be able to bully people into doing "what they're told" under the guise of an issue which allows them to paint themselves as protectors, not bullies.

Buy it or don't, but as someone posted above, the "you're not allowed to buy this game because in some nebulous way someone has decided that a person tangentially involved is considered an unperson, although when pressed on the matter will steadfastly refuse to provide any meaningful justification for same because unlike most situations where they attempt this bullying, they may end up getting sued and they know it", for me, is more likely to make me buy it, purely to annoy that lobby. But then, I'm naturally contrarian.

So lads ....about the game without all the bollox attached is it any good ? it's not that all the issues aren't relevant they are , I just don't care personally because I have no problem with any trans people I just want to know about the game

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,834 ✭✭✭Greyfox

HP is my fav book series but this is the very first time I've ever been excited about a HP game mainly because for a change the combat seems to have a bit of depth. The world looks fabulous, can't wait to play this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,438 ✭✭✭RedXIV

What will be interesting with this is that one of the most popular gaming activities among trans folks is speedrunning. watch any event by GDQ and there is always a significant number of runners who are trans and any big name game usually appears on the following GDQ. There's one in the summer and if this sells as well as it looks like it will, it'll be a notable omission.

My kids preordered this game themselves, their first time ever doing it and I'm glad to see it review so well and that they've built up real excitement for it, but I have to admit, I've told them I'd pick the game up while they are in school just on the off chance someone wants to make a point and upsets them. I'd be 99% sure it wouldn't happen but it's a strange world these days

Just got an hour in, impressed so far! It suffers from 'the intro is too bloody long' syndrome (but that might be me just not into CGI movie heavy intros at all)

Combat feels a bit little Dark Souls light. Environment visuals are absolutely stunning, genuine 'wow' moments.

Running it on a Lenovo Legion with a Ryzen 7, 3070 card and it seems to be handling Ultra mode with ray tracing switched on.
