A great palate cleanser after last weeks fight night

I love that Volkanovski has taken this fight but I can't see him winning it. I think the size difference is just too much but I hope I'm wrong.

Can't see Volkanovski managing this as much as I'd like him to. What time our time is the main card kicking off roughly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,961 ✭✭✭✭mailburner

Think it’s roughly same as normal with main card starting around 3am

so prelims starting at 7:15am oz time/6:15pm eastern, not the first time but it’s so unfair on the fighters

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭Still Ill

I'm the same the comments above. Would love a Volkanovski win, but difficult to see it happening. He doesn't have ko power from what I've seen. Usually wins by sheer volume and accumulation of damage.

Would also be concerned that he came insanely close to being submitted by Ortega that time only to miraculously escape.

Still the most exciting match up for a while. Just hope it doesn't end up being one sided on the ground.

I give Volk a decent chance but think points is the only way he wins.

I’m giving him a lot of respect for stepping up in the first place and do believe he wouldn’t have done so had he not really believed he could win.

then again he may find out like Izzy did that the bigger guy is just a little too hard to handle

the rest of the card is more like a fight night card.

it’s not something worth paying 70 bucks for or whatever it costs in the states

People are sleeping on Volk. He’s so technical and a very clever fighter.

Islam has one top quality win to his name so far.

Hoping for a great fight, if Islam can impose his will easily in this one I don’t see anyone getting near him for a long time.

Co main should be good as well, Emmet a lively outsider there also.

  • Posts: 13,688 ✭✭✭✭ Nova Shallow Sweet-talk

As above, I'd love to see Volk do it, however, sizeable bet on Islam via submission.

As an aside, I see that dosser Zubaira was fighting at catchweight lol. Off to Eagle FC he goes.

    Early Prelims started at 8:15am

    Main card is 2pm.

I think the Aussie fighters would be somewhat used to those times and train around those times. If anything it’s a slight edge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Looking forward to seeing the Aussie boys today. I think they can all win.

Having a decent bet on Josh by submission and an Aussie accumulator

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭Still Ill

Gonna be a lot of hanging around now with that early finish and the shortened Prelim schedule

Is BT sport showing the main event? Currently watching via sky now but earlier in week BT sport will only show main card to UK viewers. Is this correct?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭Still Ill

Yeah, it's all on BT Sport 1

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Bingo. My boy Josh gets it done.

    Lightening quick to the seatbelt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,369 ✭✭✭Porthallian

BT Sport is a disaster. Going for ad breaks at the end of the round and missing the first 40+ seconds of Round 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    I couldn't believe that.

No doubt what's fight of the night, you can't beat that.

A draw was a fair result.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I was very impressed by Jamie earlier on, best I've seen of him. He told his cousin that he felt stronger, smarter and fitter than ever before. He was in camp with Volkanovski.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

What a punch. Tafa is so powerful.

The Aussies are having a great night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

Jamie and Josh helped Volks for one if his camps. I think Holloway rematch. Must be better to also to also have a fight to prep for.

Nice finish from Jack there. That’s 4 round 1 finishes

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

yeah had a feeling this would be their night. Pedro let down my Aussie accumulator though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Pedro was very disappointing outside of the early takedowns. I thought he had it at one stage, I think it was the first takedown, I think there were two? He gassed very quickly.

I can't decide whose going to win the main event.

A lot of people are seriously underestimating Volkanovski. He's not the p4p king for no reason. He's beaten a talker fighter, Holloway, than Makhachev. He just has to keep it on the feet to have a great chance. He is very difficult to take down and with his height and low centre of gravity and the extra strength he'll have from the extra weight I like his chances.

Makhachev has been brilliant since coming into the UFC but so has Volkanovski. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he won by KO. If it goes to the ground I don't fancy his chances of surviving it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

It's funny hearing Buffer saying it's the main event of the 'evening' at lunchtime in Perth.

  • Posts: 13,688 ✭✭✭✭ Nova Shallow Sweet-talk

Volk is some man. Very impressive four rounds so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

    Alexander is a legend.

  • Posts: 13,688 ✭✭✭✭ Nova Shallow Sweet-talk

Makhachev may have won but the aura is gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Nobody else will touch him. If we get a rematch I think Volkanovski wins it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭Still Ill

Very impressive performance from Volkanovski.. A shame he got stuck on the ground for the fourth round. I think if he could've kept that round on their feet he may have had a cardio advantage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

That was a very narrow win. A lot of people will have scored that for Alaxander. I had it 48-48

  • Posts: 13,688 ✭✭✭✭ Nova Shallow Sweet-talk

I'd certainly love to see them go again. Nobody at 155 troubles Islam like that.

Presumably the only way we'll get that is if Volkanovski vacates or loses (lol) and heads up.

Well he said in his interview that he's going to settle the featherweight division and he's going to fight lightweight again.

He was also very gracious in defeat asking the crowd to congratulate Islam and saying he underestimated his striking. He said he felt he could have won it but didn't complain about the decision. Basically the exact opposite of a lot of MMA fighters. The respect they showed each other all the way through from when it was announced to after the fight was refreshing to see. Two great fighters and two gentlemen. That's rare in this sport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,421 ✭✭✭✭rob316

Ya know they talk about fight IQ? Volkanovski has it in absolute spades, he's an unbelievable competitor, best 5 round fighter on the planet. I want to see this fight again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

What round did you score 10-8?

Didn’t think there was one in there myself.

Volk was excellent at keeping safe on the ground and in the grappling exchanges. Don’t see anyone else doing that good a job at 155.

Got a bit wild on the feet at times but probably felt like he had to make something happen. He always learns and improves, like he did against Max. Go down and fight Yair and give Islam another go towards the end of the year perhaps.

Cant see any decent opponent for Islam at 155, Poirier, Gaethje and Chandler would be submitted easily.

Dariush, Fiziev, Tsarukyan still have prove they can do it against top level guys.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

Don't sleep on Dariush , he gives Islam all sorts of problems if they ever fight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,381 ✭✭✭Yurt2

Volkanovski may have lost but he came out of that smelling like roses, great performance. If there was another round Volk would have taken it because Islam looked fed-up in the end. One of the rounds was just Islam with a body triangle and doing nothing with it.

The crowd in Perth were absolute bogans, no element of sportsmanship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,831 ✭✭✭Eoinbmw

4TH in the rankings and on an 8 fight win steak he deserves a shot!

Gaethje and Poirer have had their chances!

Great fight, I had it scored about the same, Volkanovski clearly winning the 5th and edging the 3rd. As much as I'd like to see it again, the Rodriguez fight is mouth watering too.

There was a huge gulf in quality between those top three fights and the rest of the card but the commentary team was much better once Bisping got his awful scoring of the Tukhugov fight out of the way early.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

    A 10-8 would be 47-47

    I scored the second 10-10 for 48-48

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I thought only one person can get 10?

Like the only ways you can get a draw are when you get a 10-8 round or a 9-9.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

You can score a round a draw, that’s a 10-10. The judges avoid it as much as possible.

A 9-9 is when a fighter win the round but was docked a point.

I didn't watch any of the build up during the week - why was Khabib not at the fight? Personal Issues? Visa Issues?

As long as I don't have to see also-rans and clearly not good enough for the title Poirier & Gaethje, I'll be happy to watch.

I think Islam said in an interview it's just because Khabib wants to spend more time at home as he was on the road most of last year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,638 ✭✭✭Homelander

That was one hell of a performance from Volk. Astoundingly good fight IQ, gave Islam the toughest UFC fight of his career. Have to admire him for taking on the challenge and putting on such a show, really feel like there were no losers in that fight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

He's down a bit in the rankings but I think Jalin Turner is the biggest threat to Makhachev. I'm not sure if he can stay on his feet against him but he's done well fighting off takedowns against lesser fighters. On his feet he is lethal.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

Agreed, but unfortunately from Dana's POV, Islam v Dariush is not something that is going to draw in the casuals.

I think Islam would like Dariush soon but I reckon Dana will be telling him the money fight is probably Poirer or Gaetjhe if he beats Fiziev.

On this PPV, their wasn't much depth to it was their? Parker Porter on the main card ffs. A glorified fight night card which is something I am saying way to often after PPV's sadly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,902 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

I know what you mean, but I rather good fights over big names. And I think this card delivered good fights. Disappointed I wasn’t there in hindsight. But tickets were golddust.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,206 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

I get ya for sure. I'd rather see Fiziev/ Dariush v Islam next but sadly not sure the UFC accountants will agree!

On the card, it did have some bad luck to be fair. Whittaker was meant to fight Costa, but that fell through as Costa not happy with the money involved.

Kara France got injured which is one of those things,,,,but the idiot who booked Tuivasa on a random fight night card on December against a killer such as Pavloich instead of this whoops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Every fight doesn't have to be huge. Alexander goes and beats Rodriguez and there's nothing there for him for a while so he can come back up for a rematch. That's the money fight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,940 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

Dana & co would hate Dariush to become champion, He is a very very boring bloke

Hooker saying Islam used an IV wonder where he got that info form ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,452 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Has Hooker a history of accusing people of things?
