People need their head checked if €2.50 parking is an issue. As I already said the alternative is walking, cycling or getting the equally expensive bus which nobody wants to do. People need to accept it and move on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 95 ✭✭Lucan123

They will keep gouging as much as they can - it's only a matter of time before it becomes €3.50 due to supply chain issues or what not, then they will "Simplify" it to €3.50 per hour "for our convenience".

What is the maximum you are willing to pay because that's what they are aiming for? It might only be €2.50 now but if people don't kick up it will just keep rising to that maximum. People need to stop just accepting it.

The alternatives are not limited to walking, cycling or bus as you said... there's Blanchardstown, Online which can be cheaper than €2.50.

The problem is that “kicking up” seems limited to moaning about it online. If people avoid it, good for them but it’s not a big deal for most people and all the “outrage” appears to be just people who don’t go there anyway and want to complain about another thing

FWIW was there myself earlier for first time in a long while. Place was busy enough. Plenty of parking down by M&S and no hassle getting in or out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,858 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

I avoid the place as much as possible these days, the traffic to get there is a nightmare unless you go early.

I was for a run over that way on the first Sat afternoon of Dec, couldn't believe how quiet the car park was a for a sat day, traffic outside it was a disgrace.

The foot fall is definitely down, but is that down to the cost of living in general? I know the owner of one shop and the manager of a restaurant there, both said business was down by 30% or so

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 749 ✭✭✭tjhook

If I was planning to buy something specific, the parking charge would be a minor annoyance. Not the end of the world.

What has changed for me is that I no longer "pop in" if I'm in the area. Previously I would have popped in and bought stuff in M&S/Easons as I was passing. The odd time maybe something in a clothes shop if it caught my eye.

That's what's changed for me anyway. I imagine some stores will be unaffected, but others will suffer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,561 ✭✭✭Heroditas

Yeah I'm the same, i used to regularly pop in bit have only gone there once since you had to pay for parking.

However, another thing I've noticed is how badly laid out the lanes are that have been redeveloped. They're really badly designed. You end up constantly having to switch from one lane to another when you're approaching roundabout, there's no real "flow" to them. Also, that new T-junction that replaced the roundabout is dreadful. The lines of vision aren't great and it's actually tricky to go around the corner at anything but a crawl or you'll drift into the neighbouring lane or bump the curve. As a result, everyone crawls through the junction and feck all cars get through on each lights sequence. 🤷

That's it basically, the just popping by is gone.

I have to say, Liffey valley is empty. I've lived in the area for close to 20 years and usually Christmas time would be madness. Gardai would be moving traffic etc. None of it this year. Don't know because of paid parking, or just more online shopping.

One of my cars I can't use in the car park as it doesn't read the number plate. A little annoying. But there are some other points:

    - Ample parking around the area (M&S end). No random parking on paths as is usual around Christmas.

    - They need to fix the lane signage. Two lanes still being forced into one lane. It's gone from 2 lanes and a roundabout to 2 lanes to 1 lane. Bit weird.

    - Free parking if going to the cinema. Just ask for the voucher.

    - Had to exchnage something yesterday. In and out within about 15 minutes. No charge for parking. Seems like there is an un-advertised grace period.

    - People don't know how to park. About 10-15% of the spaces have people at bizarre angles, unable to park straight .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭This is it

I think 15 minutes is a required/standard grace period in car parks to allow for the possibility of them being full, obviously you shouldn't have to pay if you've gone into a car park and it's full so you've to leave again. Handy if like you, you can get in and out within the 15 minutes.

Yep. However I know originally there was suggestion there was no grace period!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,037 ✭✭✭✭Stark

Sounds like a good thing overall then.

Disclaimer: I live within walking distance of Liffey Valley so for the most part the changes don't affect me. If I want to pick up something small I'll just walk/cycle over. If I'm buying something that I can't carry on the bike, then usually that's something I'm buying from somewhere in the retail parks which still have free parking. But generally speaking, I'd prefer the thought of paying 2.50 and being in/out without fuss to the thought of spending an hour stuck in traffic. Kind of like paying the M50 toll rather than doing the big diversion through Chapelizod or Lucan. That said, I can see how it'd be annoying off-peak.

To be fair there was lots of ill informed talk about a variety of things about this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,521 ✭✭✭✭AndrewJRenko

Seems strange about your reg plate, is there anything non-standard that might be causing it?

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,594 ✭✭✭✭antodeco

Old vintage plate. Silver font on black. Old Irish reg. Assumed it was because of that! Although I haven't tried the other car with the same type of plate but with a YY County XXX number.

Out of interest, do you ever go through the M50 toll in your classic car, a Mini was it?

Can a private car park exclude people like yourself who drive a car with perfectly legal (presumably) plates just like that?

I would look into this if I were you. Doesn't sound right or fair to me.

My other half in Liffey valley this morning. No chance I was going.

We have had issues constantly with number plate not being recognised. They now seem to have a member of staff at each pay station all the time due to issues.

So he went to pay at machine queued up and again it couldn't find number plate. Told to go to barrier and pay. That again didn't work, no one came to help. So that exit was blocked for about 10 minutes...before they had to let him out for free...the terminals at the barrier are also touch screen...which doesn't work well if it is raining...the parking system is having serious issues as expected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,702 ✭✭✭Gusser09

The grace period is lip service only. If you have something on click and collect the very best of luck getting parking, getting into the store, collecting your item and getting out in 15 minutes. Any grace period should take this into account. 30 mins should be the grace period to allow for this.

I was collecting someone from the pictures and 15mins was barely enough as I had to park at the M+S carpark and they had to hike over to me from there.

Of course though that's not the purpose of this grace period. It shouldn't be called a grace period. It should be called the "minimum legal time we have to give you before we start ripping you off period".

Doesn't have the same ring to it though.

And the above just proves to me that this isn't about customer experience.

I have no issue with paying for parking by the way. I have issues with the way this has been implemented and is being enforced.

    Lack of signage.

First 30 mins should be free.

Obvious issues at barriers holding traffic up.

No set down / Collection point for cinema goers.

Look the usual suspect will defend this to the ends of earth just to be contrary but it's been a mess from the start.

Another thing that would put me off: it’s a lousy day here and the thoughts of having to pay to park in the open air is very off-putting to say the least. At least some of Blanch parking is under cover and it’s free.

And of course the trendsetter is Dundrum town center, the first of the major malls to charge for parking. All parking there is high quality and under cover and at a prime retail location. That made and makes their €3 for 3 hours quite palatable. Particularly when Tesco pay you it back if you spend €30 on shopping in there. Unlike Liffey Valley...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,471 ✭✭✭WishUWereHere

Compared to Dundrum charging €3 for 3 hours, what would 3 hours in LV cost?

That's the point though. Reducing vehicle speeds and the 'flow' makes the walking and cycling experiences somewhat more pleasant

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,964 ✭✭✭Dr Turk Turkelton

Also the thing I love about Dundrum parking is you can look down the row and see if there is a green light above a space that is free.

Yep. Only ever had one issue and that was the port tunnel. In fairness, I usually have a tag and didn't realise the battery had died on it. The guy asked me to call out the number plate and it worked on his machine.

  • Registered Users, Subscribers, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,594 ✭✭✭✭antodeco

Which barrier was that? Any of the barriers I've gone to doesn't have any button/ticket option, unless I'm totally blind, which means if I drive in, I sit there not being able to anywhere if it doesn't read the number plate!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,335 ✭✭✭✭gmisk

It was at the Marks and Spencer end, it is not obvious how they work tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,810 ✭✭✭Trampas

We use to go to Liffey valley at least once a month if not a few more times. Haven’t been in a months. Traffic getting in initially stopped us. Paying has also. Shops aren’t great either anymore I find

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 704 ✭✭✭lordleitrim

I think a more accurate verdict of the new parking regime will become apparent once the last of the post Christmas sales/ people spending their Christmas gift vouchers etc has dried up.

Will be interesting to see how it pans out over the Spring as the cost of living crisis Contin to kick in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,319 ✭✭✭emo72

I wonder did the SC owners lease or sell the car park. If the car park owners have invested millions in it, they will not reduce price. They could be a totally separate entity to the center.

I was in the car park for the first time the other day. Charge for up to 3 hours is €2.50. Evening rate (6pm - 8am I think) is €2.50. This is a reduction on the initial rates right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,858 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

Was there xmas eve morning and it was quiet compare to normal xmas eve. We parked at the Marks end which was quiet compare to usual xmas eve.

The atrium of the shopping centre was pretty busy but the shops were empty except for Pandora and Rituals. Marks was like a ghost town.

Didnt go near it after that, but usually keep away from the place when sales are on

Well I see Golden Discs has closed in Liffey Valley so I guess the parking charges can be blamed on that. Just Golden Discs at Tallagh and Blanchardstown now both of which are no use to me.

I thought there was one in the St Stephens Green shopping centre but I guess that one is gone too.

Shops selling media were always going to close anyway. Just a matter of time. I'm actually quite surprised some of them lasted so long. Parking at Liffey Valley seems fairly busy to me. That said, I have yet to pay a cent. The few times I went there for more than a few minutes, I just park at the retail park and walk the 5 minutes.

I do avoid the direct approach from the Fonthill Road as the Liffey Valley traffic lights are horrendous. They take nearly as long to change as above walk LOL. So I go in via Coldcut Road. Or even via Neilstown road if Fonthill Road is busy.

One positive of the parking charge is you can now park there no problem, in the lot outside the main entrance, a decent number of spaces, was next to impossible before, so wouldn't even bother.

Number plate reading is a great thing

Didn't seem any less busy inside but only time will tell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,773 ✭✭✭cgcsb

It's easy to park now. I registered online to pay automatically as I go. I've been there a lot and have yet to be charged. So seems to be free for me still.

Golden Discs closed the small shop in Stephens Green centre but opened a new much bigger one. It's pretty much all t-shirts and vinyl though, surprisingly few CDs for sale

    Scrap the cap!

Surely not per hour as in the first three hours for €9.90? If that were the case, they'd lose a lot of business for sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 704 ✭✭✭lordleitrim

The new bus interchange built in the centre of the car park will have buses stopping in them from this coming Sunday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,215 ✭✭✭Sunrise_Sunset

I think it will remain as free for the first 2 or 3 hours, can't remember which. But then 3.30 per hours thereafter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,858 ✭✭✭✭average_runner

With B&Q in major trouble now, shops really need to up their game. Marks delivery service is very poor. They need a click and collect section in the car park, so it can be fast, in and out. Next are on the ball with the next day delivery, they will be fully online in the next few years with very few shops

Closing stores down in the UK. They never moved with the online market.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,312 ✭✭✭✭Cienciano

Just googled it, B&Q are closing 8 locations in England, small locations they share with Asda. The 57 staff effected will be offered jobs elsewhere. Hardly major trouble.

Someone at the start of the thread mentioned M&S in Liffey Valley was in big trouble too. They have since spent €1m on revamping the store.

No idea why people think stores are on the verge of closing when they obviously aren't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 349 ✭✭Senature

Well here's a recent article about M&S plans to close stores

I have also noticed that since Brexit, there is continually availability issues in the food section. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were considering closing their stores in ROI.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,298 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

B&Q are always busy enough when I'm in there. I've never needed to shop online with them, the stuff they sell are things I'd rather see in person rather than have to potentially return bulky items.
