You are wrong. The poster you were replying to is correct.

Insurance details on the Pulse system are updated when the car is taxed. Insurers do not routinely provide details of their customers to Gardai, that would be a breach of GDPR.

If Gardai wish to obtain such information they would need to submit a request under the Data Protection Act, and certain circumstances would need to be satisfied, e.g. required as part of an ongoing investigation.

Thank you for your support but MikeCairo78 is correct. The database the Gardai have or will have access to has two parts ....

    • Motor Third Party Liability (MTPL) Database is the database which contains details of all single-vehicle policies like that of your average private motorist. This data is supplied by the insurance companies and is updated when policies are cancelled or renewed.
    • National Fleet Database (NFD) contains details of vehicles insured under motor fleet and motor trade policies. People in the motor trade or who manage fleets will have a userid and password to login and update their vehicle details in the NFD. Only brokers and insurance companies can add named drivers to the NFD.

As MikeCairo78 and I have highlighted, the legislative framework for the NFD is not yet in place. This is because the Road Traffic and Roads Bill (2021) has not yet been passed by the Oireachtas. The planned implementation date of this March is now looking a bit optimistic.

The Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID), comprising the Motor Third Party Liability (MTPL) Database and the National Fleet Database (NFD), provides a single point of reference for motor vehicles insured in Ireland.

The data in the IMID is provided by motor insurers, brokers, fleet owners and motor traders. The data includes policy holder details, vehicles registration numbers and names of drivers that are permitted to driver the vehicles that are covered by each policy. The IMID is managed by the MIBI and the data is shared with the Department of Transport and An Garda Síochána as set out in Section 78A of the Road Traffic Act.

All the above would seem to suggest the lady (I assume) was every poorly treated.

Given that the cert was emailed in pdf form and viewable on he phone I can't see that a printed out version adds any more evidence that he car was insured, and the tax status was easily verifiable from teh Garda's point of view.

That is, as Coylemj points out, we are hearing the full story.

In that case thank you for the reply and apologies to MikeCairo78. I wasn't aware of that.
