Why is there no new popular sports????

Every really popular sport we have was invented years ago.

Soccer, rugby, football, tennis, basketball etc etc

Have we run out of ideas as humans??

true and MMA is really just a hybrid combat sport, nothing too original about it.

the human mind probably just has ran out of ideas…

sport has to be enjoyable to watch as well as play…

some people recognise pigeon racing and pole dancing as sports.

others see Leithwei as a legitimate sport, you can as per the rules… head butt your opponents.

Think there are over 800 or 900 recognised sports but good luck inventing another with any connection to reality.

Could argue the same for music and even film.

It's not lack of creativity. Just investors etc are more interested in maintaining the status quo.

Easier to reboot star wars than find the next big thing.

The idea of codifying sports and organising them at regional, then national and international level largely came about with the Industrial revolution and emergence of large urban populations. Forms of soccer and tennis, for example, had been around for centuries before that. “New sports” had tended to evolve from existing ones as the basic concept moved from one region to another and different group of participants put their own interpretations on it as opposed to being deliberately invented. But once there was a rule book, there would be less tendency for the sport to change as it did so.

Inevitably, as that widespread organisation started to take place, sports that were already popular and/or got there act together before others have become somewhat entrenched in their national or international stature and there’s either little incentive or ability to push new sports to the fore.

There are always some exceptions and some sports that rely on more recent actual technical inventions have become at least widely watched if not widely participate in. Motorsport would be an obvious example. And there always seems to be a new way of hurling yourself down a mountain every Winter Olympics

We used to have one in the local village. Basically, you had a track (about 40 yards long and about three yards wide, we used a footpath) along which you had to bowl a tennis ball (we tried using sliothars, but it was just way too unpredictable).

At the end of the was a patch of grass where we stuck a series of 8 sticks for 7 scoring options between them. The middle one was two tennis balls wide, the ones either side of the middle was three tennis balls wide, the ones outside that was 4 tennis balls, the two outer ones were 5 tennis balls (narrowest in the middle and got wider as you went out). The scoring was 1/2/3/5/3/2/1 if you were looking at it dead on.

To score, you had to go through the sticks. Go wider of the sticks, bounce back off the sticks, or it goes off the track and you don't score. Individual games were 25 points, team games were 20 points for every teams member (based on the smallest teams numbers).

We just came up with it out on nowhere, a mixture of various other games, and we just came up with rules and scoring system, and that was it. It often took ages, but we played it during the summer so we had time to kill. Did it for a two summers. It was a grand game, we used to have great craic and great slagging involved, especially on hot days.

Then the following summer it just disappeared, we didn't bother with it again, soccer, hurling and swimming in the river took over.

So I can see how games can come out of nowhere and disappear just as quickly.
