Was readin de preliminary report of the tragic Nepal air crash at Pokhara. A female captain was being trained into this new approach by a more experienced male captain, so she could in future command her own aircraft to the new airport. Nepal has some of the world’s most difficult flying conditions.
She was doing the flying in the left hand seat, aiming the aircraft to the new runway in a relatively tight circuit surrounded by mountains. Around 800 feet she called for full flap to be deployed by Pilot Monitoring (her instructor) but instead of pulling the flap lever he pulled the adjacent pair of levels to cut the fuel supply to both engines. She called out three times that engines had lost power as she tried to steer the aircraft, he failed to respond, there was nowhere to go but crash.
The question is why did the instructor freeze. It is suspected he was suffering from exhaustion, but of course it could have been a medical issue like the smouldering heart attack that caused the Trident crash at Staines, another case of inadvertent lever pulling and failure to act on stick shaker warning.
Green lever yes, red lever NO unless engine is on Foyre a dat.
I wouldn’t let Ray Darcy anywhere near the controls of an aircraft of any kind.
De above is the precise same aircraft type I learned to fly in. Pull white knob to keep engine running ice free, pull red knob to cut fuel supply and stop engine. Black knob is throttle to set engine power. You want to know your knobs when flying.
