Does anyone know what this means for people that have deferred from October or ones that are reserve. During the last freeze at the start of the year think they did a small intake for people that had deferred.

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭mse2020

From what i understand, when they find some money they will call the the lowest merit list positions, i think if you deferred from October you would be on top of the list for the next intake, what merit list position are you just out of curiosity?

Just a quick question for anyone who is in GV or recently been to GV, do you have to stay at the college or can you compute, i have 2 young kids and i would prefer to comute if that is a possibility

  • Registered Users Posts: 12 nsic93

@mse2020 you don’t have to commute. It is just for the people who live further away who might prefer to stay.

Any new recruits on here want to help a student on the merit list? I need a short survey completed for my masters. Less than 5 mins and completely anonymous.

    thanks so much

Hi Everyone, I'm new to this forum. Thought I'd join up and keep some communication with people going through the same disappointment as myself. I'm part of the 2020 merit list >800 on list and have been appointable since the start of the year. Probably not many of us left on here awaiting the call right enough.

The PSNI is to put a total freeze on recruitment for an entire year due to a lack of money, according to reports.

Funding problems have created uncertainty for hundreds of officers who were recruited following a recruitment campaign in 2020.

The Nolan Show has revealed 51 new recruits waiting to start training at Garnerville in October will proceed as planned.

However, 129 of 224 people on a list who are ready to begin training cannot progress.

Just read this on Belfast telegraph Twitter…

    Tbh it just gets worse.

Hard to wait particularly for those lads who are appointable from 2020 campaign.

  • Registered Users Posts: 52 ✭✭Gda88

Yeah I’m 875-900 on the 2020 merit list and I have been appointable for a couple of months now. Doesn’t look like we will be starting anytime soon.

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭mse2020

I recieved a reply from recruitment today, i asked them to clarify when there financial year runs to and their response was that the financial year runs to march next year and after October they do not have anymore planned GV courses or intakes until the next financial year meaning earliest April 2023, they also stated that they are unable to confirm exactly when appointments will recommence, but they will keep appointable candidates upto date with all relevant information when any information becomes available

Does anyone know if the merit list expires after a certain amount of time?

Absolute nightmare! I'd like to think whenever the new financial year starts they would just fire us through to GV but that would be too simple I guess lol. The wait continues... An expiry of the merit list is my worst nightmare but the only reassuring thing is the 2018 list still have a few left according to their stats which I hope means we aren't getting shut down anytime soon i hope 🤞

    Anyone get any updates ?

Nope not a thing unfortunately. There were a few questions brought up at the Policing Board meeting today regarding recruitment but nothing new :(

    Psni website updated today

just a few things for applicants to consider when applying for the guards and need to go into it with eyes open:

Pension: many people join thinking the pension is great. we get fed this from our parents who are basing it on their era from their age. anyone joining post 2013 the pension is disgraceful. you will get about 215-230 euro a week when you reture at 60, which is in line with the old age pension which everyone in none state jobs get. when you join a station you will quickly be told of this and advised to pay into your own AVC to supplement your poor garda pension. this fact is kept very quiet as it no doubt will affect peoples thinking when applying for this job and correctly so. the lump sum payment at retirement has also been slashed since 2013. nobody realises this and isnt publicised about in the media nor will you find it marketed by the guards as a reason to join as it doesnt exist anymore. people are walking in blind thinking great pension setting me up for life

Trainee wages: since 2020 and covid, the structure for trainees has changed. The 184 euro a week has been extended from the college settings to the workplace where you now get paid 184 euro a week in your training station as a student guard while working 12 hr shifts and nights etc not just 184 euro in the college ans bed and food taken care of.

Rosters: as you may have read rosters are under discussion. despite the current one proposed being rejected by the GRA for non core guards to be working 78 days extra a year working 7 days on, 2 days off, 7 days on 3 days off on 9 to 5 hrs, and lose thousands due to not working to non social hours. this new roster is still going live despite rejection from the people it affects most resulting in extra childcare fees due to working more days, fuel costs for travelling to work more often. management have power to do this without consent which is shocking in the day and age of work life balance and 4 day weeks being considered by private sector employers now.

Work: I appreciate many have wanted to be guards since childhood and want it desperately for whatever is their reasons. if its for the day to day work then be prepared that it is all paper work orientated. everything is reports, duplication and beurocracy which snows everyone under. helping decent people is actually rare who for the majority will rarely come into contact with guards in their lives but to get passports sorted etc. you will mainly be refereeing domestics with people who call you to get one over on an ex partner due to child custody or if its current partners they will later withdraw complaints but for it to start again further down the line, mental health persons which you are not trained to deal with, frauds which you will be beating your head off a wall trying to progress but cant due to banks delaying you and outside of this any other crimes tend to be between one low life against another one or wrestling with drunk lads on cold rainy nights out facing taking a punch or a kick.

morale is rock bottom in the job, people are resigning in their droves as they see the realities and the work load expected of them, the day of staying in the job until retirement is in the past now which used to be the case for sure. i know many will view this as overly negative summary of the job so what i would advise is before following through with it talk to others you know in the job and hear what they have to say first. i dont know anyone in it that would recommend it anyways

Has anyone heard anything about the budget, i thought that with it being talked about in the media that would kind of push the issue to be resolved but i cant find any information anywhere. I even emailed recruitment asking for updates but i haven't got a reply yet

I've not heard a thing. Like yourself I've also been checking but there is nothing mentioned since it last made the news a few weeks back. I did read the CC report and it states the following:

"In the coming weeks, the Police Service will continue to engage with the Board and the Department for Justice on the precarious funding landscape facing policing."

I'm staying hopeful that in their discussions they are able to give us clarity before Christmas and once funding is found they get us in early new year 🤞

It would also have been nice for them to even send us through some of the online learning they require us to do before GV. At least it's something to work towards and to keep us interested 3 years later lol.

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭mse2020

Anyone who has been through GV or currently going through GV, is there any material i could read/learn now. I need to pass time during this recruitment freeze.

  • Registered Users Posts: 229 ✭✭Boneyard2002

Your best bet is to learn Human rights and different articles like article 2 etc

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭mse2020

Anyone heard any news, i read on another board that there is an intake in January of around 10.

Unfortunately not. Things have been very quiet and it seems not many of us 2020 candidates are left in the forums. Would be nice to hear some more news before Christmas but seems unlikely. Another 10 in January would at least get the ball rolling but I wonder is there any truth in it.

Based on what was posted on another board the talk in GV is 10 in January then back to normal numbers in May... but chris heaton harris has said in his lastest statement that he will be giving civil servants the powers to allocate funding including the Northern Ireland policing board so that should speed things up also, i hate sitting about waiting lol

I'm the same mate, this waiting about is soul destroying. Checking this forum/news for updates has become somewhat of an obsession for me with the hope of being saved from my current office job lol. Fingers crossed for us that things start to work out and the funding is sorted 🤞

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭mse2020

I am exactly the same, i check this forum everyday and the same with the news, just out of curiosity what merit position are you, i am 800 - 850 i emailed recruitment recently asking when could i expect a phone call when things pick up again and they said that based on my merit number i would be in one of the intital intakes, that is the only thing keeping me going at the minute, i work in the manufacturing industry and it just really isnt what i want to be doing anymore.

I'm between 850-900 on merit list so I'm probably not expecting to be on the next one to be fair. Probably 2nd next intake for me. It would be nice if they'd update their diagram on their website to see if many more dropped out. Yeah I'm the same, this phone call can't come soon enough. Nothing worse than being this close to a career change and being stuck in limbo :(

The legislation has now passed high ranking civil servants now have the power to allocate funding to emergency services. hopefully thisngets the ball rolling.

Do yous think this will positively impact this campaign/ PSNI budget. Fingers crossed.

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭mse2020

I do yes, chris heaton harris mentioned the police board in his statement last week in regards to funding. The issue with recruitment was lack of additional funding because of no executive and no MLA's to allocate funding but now because of the legislation being passed high ranking civil servants will be allowed to allocate funding for emergency services

Looks promising. Hopefully we hear some kind of good news before Christmas or at the start of the new year about this.

  • Registered Users Posts: 26 marshall6

This is brilliant news. I hope the process to allocate the funding doesn't take long.

Hi folks with all the news coming out today in regards to budget. When do yous think the next intake will happen. I guess at this rate it is anyone’s guess like?

Hi @[Deleted User], I like to imagine the new financial year will bring some hope for the last few in the 2020 Merit list. This recruitment freeze cannot keep going the way it is or it will be a disaster. So honestly I think April or May for another intake.

Diagrams updated on the website yesterday for anyone left on here.

    https://www.joinpsni.co.uk/police-officer/recruitment-stats

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭mse2020

Is there many people left on here ? I am in the 2020 campaign 800 - 850 merit position what about everyone else ?

Not many of us left I don't think. I'm 850-900 on the list. It would be interesting to know what merit numbers are next for the call once recruitment resumes. Could either be a lot of people behind us or a lot of people still infront of us awaiting the call lol. Recruitment never want to give too much away 😂

They never do i asked them ages agowhat merit numbers they got to and they just said with my merit number there would be a high chance of me getting the within the first couple of intakes so i just took that as 800+

Yeah sounds about right with them. Hopefully April/May will see the recruitment restart and possibly they might make it their priority to clear up the 2020 campaign fingers crossed.🤞

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭mse2020

Yes hopefully here soon next years budget is finalised in march so i would like to think there would be an update start of next month. Really hope they they clear all the 2020 campaign my job at the minute is draining the life out of me i hate all this waiting but just has to be done unfortunately

I can relate with you there. I'm working the usual 9-5 office job and like yourself it's just soul destroying. Checking for emails every few days hoping for the good news but as you say we just have to wait it out. It'll be worth the wait 👍

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭mse2020

Theres another week down, hopefully the police board meeting in march tells a story. Anyone here any news/gossip this week. The radio silence is killing me lol

Unfortunately no updates or news from my side. The policing board meeting in march will be interesting to hear, hopefully it brings some good news. Calls normally have went out in the past 6 weeks before the intake start date. That would mean if they wanted to recruitment urgently in April at the start of the financial year they would need to start making offers next week onwards in theory. But hard to know what's going on with no updates from recruitment :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 66 ✭✭mse2020

CHECK YOUR EMAILS...... just received an email stating a small cohort will be commencing training in april and they will be contacted in the coming days

Just got it there. Glad to see some sort of movement. I doubt I'll make the cut but nonetheless it's a step in the right direction.

What’s your ML? And everyone else waiting roughly? I’m 800-850.

I'm 850-900. I'd really like to know what merit number is next in line for a call. It would give us some clarity lol. Also I wonder how many is going to be in this small cohort intake they mention 🤔.
