Prendergast is a fantastic prospect. He's well ahead of Tector on this evidence and will be starting for Leinster in a couple of years.

What an utterly bizarre thing to mention. Very odd.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Bandwagon jumpers for a under 20s game is a new one for me anyway! Great to see the big crowds out for it down in Cork though, especially when you see just a few hundred at the equivalent Scotland v Wales game in Glasgow despite much better spectator facilities being on offer at Scotstoun.

Makes sense in fairness, Connacht could offer him a senior contract this season and he'd be competing with Carty for the 10 shirt right away. Would have his brother there to help him settle in also. If he lives up to his potential he'd give Connacht a few good years and then maybe head back to his home province if he wants to.

    What a load of nonsense.

They came out on top in the kicking battle, the scrum and lineout all of which are down to coaching and all of which allowed them to win a game against bigger stronger opposition.

Its a team playing to its strengths that is able to compensate and overcome its weakness on the pitch and win games like the welsh match when the backs are being bettered and last night when the forwards are under pressure.

Sure there are elements that could be improved, and we have seen improvement from the welsh match but to say they are not well coached is ballacks.

If anything the french are badly coached, physical dominance but picking up bad yellow cards, a scrum half thats poor and they dont replace.

There are some more tests to come for this side, away to italy is going to be a massive test.

I already amended that statement in reply to someone else. Its probably more that this is just a more raw team than last year, but way more talented in the pack.

However, they weren’t actually that undersized up front against France. This is the most powerful pack we’ve had in a long time. Also, if the scrum and the lineout are definitively good coaching, then terrible maul defense, and an inability to get the ball past 10 with any regularity in structured play must therefore be bad coaching.

The only thing i would actually say is straight up bad coaching on further reflection is not using all your subs in a development game.

The one thing I would be critical of Paddy McCarthy was his role in our maul defence. On more than one occasion he got stuck on the side of a ruck doing nothing. Trying to get near the scrum half. Instead of breaking off and rejoining from the back. He had a great game and is really talented but needs to be smarter about that.

I'm sorry, have we to check in every day to show we're true believers, or like lads on parole?

188 posts in 5 years. 6 in total on under 20’s rugby. All on match nights.

Must say, really agree on Musgrave Park. Really feels like they've made it their home over last 2 years. Great atmosphere provided by the crowd.

There is absolutely no reason for Prendergast to go to Connacht!! Hands off

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,983 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

I believe we tried to sign him last year but he chose Leinster. No idea what would have changed in the past year, he's clearly rated at Leinster who have had him around the first team since he was 18 or so.

Wouldn't worry about Connacht, not sure how many times we tried to sign Caelan Doris but his head was never turned.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,607 ✭✭✭snotboogie

Does Scotstoun have much better facilities than Musgrave Park? I was there last night and I thought they put on a great show. Pints were slow and the bathrooms were a bit run down but other than that everything was fine.

7k for an under 20’s game shows how underserved the market in Cork is.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,037 ✭✭✭Cosmo Kramer

Scotstoun is a great setup to be fair. Easy to access on the suburban train network, all seated and covered, easy bar access even on the busy nights. Hard to get a crowd out in Glasgow for an Under 20s game though. I might head over for the Ireland game there in a few weeks.

Isn't there a good chance of Prendergast getting a decent bit of first team game time with Leinster next season? Sexton and R.Byrne will almost certainly both be at the WRC or, if not, unavailable to play. H.Byrne would be the next in line at 10 but his injury record isn't good. Frawley could play 10 but may be needed at 12, and the experiment with him at 10 may have ended already anyway. Prendergast could be ahead of Tector and could easily find himself as back up 10 in several URC games and get reasonable game time off the bench. The carrot Connacht could offer him wont be as big next season as other seasons.

Nice win. Very lively bunch we have. Some great future players. Financial Gunne is a small lad, but he's very good.

The news from japan. In coming March, repsentatives of Japanese high school team(age of under 18) will visit Ireland. They already selected squads and soonwill begin the training for matches against Ireland conbind U18 and U19 team. Before ariving here, they 'll have several training camps every 3~4 days. (in fact almost every day) So they 'll have high grade speed, skill and fitness.Maybe it'll be interesting game. The tour schedule and venue etc are yet not released. Hopefully, one game will take place in Limerick or Galway.

Amazing to see the success of the U20s in selling out Musgrave Park already for the England match.

Having the U20s selling out Musgrave twice is a great endorsement of the program and of the decision to base the team in Cork. Obviously its a development team so financial success isn't the goal but sell outs are sell outs and to be appreciated.

Its great sign we've sold out already. weeks in advance. And shows importance of playing more international games outside of Dublin. Theres a real desire for international rugby all across the country

    Unchanged team for Italy:

Felt like there was a lot more rotation over the last few years.

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,645 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

testament to how good italy are these days at 20s level

Yeah, plus the team have played well and won two good games. If there isn't injury enforced rotation, there is no need for disruption for just disruption's sake.

I think this will be a huge test for the 20s this weekend - Italy beat them in December and probably should have beaten France.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,983 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

Italy have a monstrous front row, will be a really good test. Hopefully the sub half backs especially get some proper minutes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,581 ✭✭✭Dubinusa

Italy beat us in a warm up match. They are more of capable.

Great start from the 20s, and brilliant try from Gleeson off a simple looking line out move.

Gleeson had loads of work to do and powered through 3 tacklers. He’s a super talent.

    Brilliant by Gunne
