In the 90s/Early 00s, Gareth O Callaghan was a big RTE household name, he was the mc of the rose of tralee, he got to fill in for Gay Byrne on the radio and his name was been mentioned as a possible permanent full-time replacement for Gay Byrne so how did he end up doing 5 hour shows per day on 4 listeners fm ?

Chris Carey once fired him from Nova because he talked too much. I'd extrapolate from there.

I heard bizarre rants was the reason he left Galway Bay FM by 'mutual consent'.

Was 'Tony Garretts' not fired for refusing to drink live on air as part of drink education spot on Nova ?.

Went to Caroline then BBC Radio and returned to Ireland on Energy 103 - run by a few from Nova

I'm sure he left RTE / 2FM of his own volition due to his own "issues" and his belief that he could become a successful novelist / fiction writer and/or a psychologist.

Neither of those paths seemed to work out so it wasn't long before he turned up on GB FM... which was a strange fit, the few times I heard him on it. I did hear that he left GB FM under a cloud but again I thought he left of his own choice - to go on to the then fledgling 4FM.

I thought he left 2FM due to him wanting to go full time into being a psychologist and he did that in galway (and having the gbfm morning radio gig to have a full day to concentrate on his psychologist work). He partner at the time was based in galway.

The strange thing is that if he did leave 2FM on bad terms..there was a build up to his final show and it was acknowledged by fellow presenters at the time (it wasnt a walk out or sudden departure like what happened Ruth Scott).

Also, he actually came back to 2FM a few months after he left to fill in for breakfast for a week or 2 during the transition of Rick and Ruth finishing up and Marty Whelan starting breakfast. In 2005.

That's correct. It upset a lot of the staff at the time.

I thought he'd left voluntarily too but who knows? Seeing as he's a rather outspoken individual, he probably has lost friends in the industry.

Yep. Gareth always has a lot to say for himself. He's prone to random rants on social media too. Doesn't do himself any favours imo.

Now 5 hours on 4fm is crazy. Two presnters taking up nearly 50% of air time on one station is a bit extreme. I was a 4fm fan brfore its a basket case now.

Pat C on Nova has been doing 5 hours for years.

Also Gareth has his love songs show on sun morning which is a further 3 hours.. that's 28 hours of live radio each week for Gareth.

sure he was only doing 10 hours for his majority of his time on 2FM.!

In the case of Pat James his show is 4 hours in length 9PM to 1AM

Follow his antics on social media, and you'll see fairly quickly why he seems to have itchy feet.

If someone has any mental health issues, staying away from social media, esp the likes of Twitter, I would advise.

All he's doing is spinning a few discs lads the way ye are talking you would swear he is doing hard labour in North Korea

The way he used to plug new products on 2FM made me want to throw up. it was patently obvious that he was getting freebies in return for a plug on air and boy did he deliver.

The format was pretty simple: if you were launching a new gadget like a PDA (before mobile phones there was a class of handheld gadget called a personal digital assistant - PDA), send a free sample to GO'C with a list of features, he would give the gadget a major plug while reading out the feature list in a gushing tone of voice - like this is the greatest piece of kit I have EVER seen, you must go out and buy one.

That was not confined to GOC!

He caused more hassle and hurt to the family of that poor young lad, all the time being enabled by an army of hormonal middle aged harpies on FB, who saw no wrong in what he was doing.

But he did set up a counselling service in Galway, while also working on Galway Bay FM breakfasts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,748 ✭✭✭Pelvis Parsley

I heard he gorged on Toblerone and drove to Dundee in his bare feet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,509 ✭✭✭SpitfireIV

Lies! I can't understand how something like this can be left unchallenged!!!

He wasn't barefoot, he was wearing soleless socks!

I remember Gareth and sports presenter John Kenny had a good rapport on his early 90's 2fm show. Made me smile anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,748 ✭✭✭Pelvis Parsley

Aside from his more recent, and very public online ramblings-the only memory I have of his afternoon show on RTE was that it was a blatant ripoff of Steve Wright on BBC, and filled with the sound of back slapping (canned applause, "Hi Gareth, love the show" etc. etc.)

    Couldn't stand him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 380 ✭✭Leilak

I dont think hes missed though in his own mind he thinks he is. Hes another ego driven broadcaster who thinks he cant be done without! eh its grand Gareth, Radio is doing fine without you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,258 ✭✭✭✭Losty Dublin

For a few years it felt as if his afternoon show was repeating episodes from previous years.

Why the sudden bumping of this thread? Is it because of what he has been posting on social media recently?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,748 ✭✭✭Pelvis Parsley

    No.

He'll have more drama next week. This is not a one off affair.

I'm not a fan as such and can see why he rubs people up the wrong way . But on a human level I have a lot of sympathy for him and what lies ahead for him. Someone I follow on Twitter either liked or retweeted that comment, which is why I saw it. Then I spotted this zombie thread getting bumped for some reason. Why? What's to be gained by bitching about a man with a terminal illness and who had to give up his broadcasting career because of it. It's obvious he still uses the internet. Is somebody hoping he'll see this thread? I think it should be closed but there doesn't seem to be a moderator in the place any more

Yeah you make a fair point. I’ll bow out of this one I think.

I wouldn't give him a pass as such-he's visited a lot of upset on others, and seems to suffer from acute phases of arrogance and sheer stubbornness. One thing about him, he's never wrong, in his own view anyway!

For a chap who goes on about hearts and minds, he rarely sees the other side.

If someone bumped this to try and get a dig at him, that's unfair and reprehensible carry on, but I fail to see why he should be immune from fair criticism, which the likes of Duffy and Hobbidy also receive here on a daily basis.

However, like the poster above, I do take the point and see where you're coming from.

Was it GOC who used to call up companies in a quiz in the afternoon. ?

Does anyone remember the camp hairdresser character named Phileeep he had on in the early 00s? Basically trying to recreate the John Creedon Terrence character from the late 80s.

Mrs Brown's Boys started as a short daily segment on Gareth O'Callaghan's show in the afternoon.

Did yeez hear that GOC recently Retconned the reason for his 2fm departure ? He has gone nuts on twitter since this Tubridy thing broke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

It's not the first time GOC has jumped on a big story and made it all about himself.... the man loves himself / loves being the centre of attention.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 127 ✭✭Lord Nelson

Personally, I think he’s a well past his sell by date. Not disputing in his heyday he was top notch. He’s a total narcissist, loves himself, massive ego, drama queen, makes everything about himself. Perfect fit for RTE..

If the other "big story" is the same one that I think you're referring to, that's what made me stop taking the guy seriously. Such a pity as I don't remember any point when he wasn't on the radio (I'm in my mid-30s) and always had a lot of time for him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,645 ✭✭✭California Dreamer

Said last week he was making no more comments about it as it wasn't doing his mental health any good. This was AFTER the Examiner article which didn't reveal anything really.

Came back yesterday to say that he would be on Virgin Media today to talk about it. Why Gareth? Bow out, keep the last shred of your legacy intact and say nothing.

He seems to be the only ex-2FM'r that is commenting on the whole thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

It’s ludicrous. What exactly has he to say on the matter that is of any relevance? Trust Virgin Media to latch onto his bandwagon 🙄

He hasn’t worked for RTE for almost 20 years. I’d be very surprised if Tubs knows him more than in a passing way and I’m sure most of current RTE management wouldn’t know him either. So his insight into the RTE issue is about as insightful as mine is

And if you actually read that Examiner article and go past the silly click bait headlines he says almost nothing of interest. He resigned/left RTE due to some disagreement with management at the time. So what…. It happens every day of the week and it’s nothing whatsoever to do with the current Tubridy debacle. He’s changed that story multiple times over the years. Originally he left due to mental health issues / writing a book / setting up as a counsellor. Whatever way the wind is blowing Gareth, eh. It’s been the same craic with him before, Gerry and his coke habit, among other more “uncomfortable” stories he’s latched himself onto. He’s embarrassing himself but doesn’t seem to realise it

The man is an attention seeker, a clear narcissist and seems to lap up all the attention he gets on Facebook from Middle aged housewives.

Having said all that, I actually think he’s absolutely excellent at his actual day job - a radio music presenter. A cut above anyone else on that station he’s camped on. And imo he should stick to that job, play the songs and keep his opinions on the headlines of the week firmly to himself.

A lot of major changes came to daytime 2fm not long after GOC left, young guns of the day Nikki Hayes, Rick O'Shea,Will Leahy & Ruth Scott got daytime slots, Larry Gogan & Dave Fanning were moved to weekends, so it's hard to picture how Gareth would have survived on the 2fm of post 2006 tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,358 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

The funny thing is that none of them are involved with 2FM anymore, with Dave Fanning being the most recent to leave. Larry Gogan had been taken off 2FM completely a year before he passed away, with his sole broadcasting duties being with RTE Gold. Rick, Will and Dave are all connected now to RTE Gold (Dave also does some stuff on Radio One), while Nikki and Ruth went to independent commercial radio stations. As it happens, Ruth is currently involved with Gareth's station Classic Hits.
