Amazing result in Berlin - huge for Union to knock out Ajax, 3-1. Some incredible season so far.

All the Liverpool fans in here telling us how bad Barcelona are.

7 points ahead of RM in La Liga who just rinsed Liverpool 5-2 at home.

Union Berlin having a fairytale season.

The difference between Liverpool and Man Utd this season is that this season Man Utd are the side in the hat for 4 trophies.

Liverpool managed to get 2 of the 4 they were chasing last season.

We should reconvene in June to tot up the trophy count then and see how many "the most successful Premier League club" have added to their tally. Unfortunately for them, I am backing them to get #1 in the bag over the weekend. You have been warned!

Rennes vs Shakhtar going to a shootout after a Rennes OG in the 119th minute. It's live on the BT Sport goals show.

And Shakhtar win the shootout. Rennes join Monaco in going out on pens. Some achievement for Shakhtar considering everything going on in Ukraine.

Fascinating how this turned into Utd v Liverpool. It's exhausting.

Does anyone reasonably think Liverpool are playing as well as Utd this season? So why is anyone comparing their performances against Spanish sides? It's moot.

Last night was about Ten Hag. The Rashford switch of position, putting Antony wide (pushing Balde back) solved Utd's biggest issue. Then they took their chances.

The most impressive thing about Ten Hag isn't necessarily the style of play or anything. It's his proactive substitutions. He's nearly always impacting games.

  • Registered Users Posts: 258 ✭✭It is a Dunne Deal

Yep excellent management from Ten Hag once again. It just goes to show that all Man Utd were missing was a proper manager the fact that they left Ole in charge for so long was criminal not to mention replacing him with the hapless Ragnick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,123 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

United also needed to hit rock bottom.

A few years back Ten Hag wouldn't have been given any time to get his project in place.

  • Registered Users Posts: 258 ✭✭It is a Dunne Deal

It certainly helped but to be fair he has turned them around in his first season. The best thing that happened IMO was the 2 humiliations at the start of the season against Brighton and Brentford it convinced the board to splash on Casemiro who has been a trans-formative signing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,822 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

    Great win for United ,

Barcelona very good in midfield but my god there forward line is so poor, Lewi is what 34 ? & the rest aren't up to much at all , How are they so far ahead in Spain ,

  • Site Banned Posts: 20,685 ✭✭✭✭Weepsie

If that was the other way round Busquets would still be rolling around the Old Trafford pitch this morning. IT was a horrible foul. Grabbing someone around the neck to stop them like that is borderline red card.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,822 ✭✭✭✭yourdeadwright

To be fair Casemiro made the exact same foul about 2 minutes later ,The Barca player didn't do 6 rolls holding his face but he was chasing the game so of course he was straight up ,

iv no doubt he would have done what Garnacho did if Barcelona where winning, But still doesn't make it right ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

This is the last draw that has restrictions connected with it. So Arsenal can't be paired with Man Utd this time round, but could be, if both advance to the quarter-finals. I would expect that both sides should be confident of reaching the Champions league by dint of their league exploits, so this tournament is on the "nice to win" list. Having said that, I don't know what compromises the managers might make if they were to get to the semi-finals, whilst also having a chance to win the domestic league.

I have a feeling that Arsenal will be off to Italy and Man Utd will draw Freiburg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,332 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

Garnacho rolling around - my assumption is it was basic time wasting. 2-1 with 5 minutes of normal time to go, with Barca pushing? Take any excuse to slow the game down. Its what they would have done.

Your 100% right that's exactly what it was, Barcelona have probably been the worst at this in the last decade or so , I think the holding of the face is what annoys people but as you said Barcelona would have done the same ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,358 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

    Because La Liga isn't strong.

Liverpool have fooled everyone with their capitulation the other night. Real Madrid are good, but would likely be beaten by any of the current top 3 teams in England - even City for all their relative hiccupping.

(and yes, I know what happened last season)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,332 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

I know XG is a maligned stat, but liverpool did have a better XG the other night as well didn't they? Poor goals conceded, and lack of clinical finishing cost them, but in general play were liverpool that bad? Vini first goal superb, second fluke/mistake.3rd poor defending to be fair. 4th unlucky (horrid deflection). 5th poorly defended on the transition as well.

Like it was a hammering on the scoreline, but I don't think overall play was a dominating performance from Real.

Barca were all over United for the last 25minutes in Spain - sure United could and maybe should have been further ahead, but we could have lost that game the way the final 20 went. Barca were comfortably the better side in the first half last night. Barcelona were also without Gavi and in particular Pedri, two big losses.

    Round of 16 Draw

Madrid are an odd one ,No matter there La Liga for they always do well in the Champions League ,

I suppose Barcelona where missing Pedri, Gavi & Dembele last night ,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,358 ✭✭✭✭SlickRic

Liverpool were porous centrally, so I'd say we were bad. But I take your point.

Tough game for mi Beti. The defense needs to improve a lot to have any chance, also if Fekir plays well and gets protection from the ref then we could nick it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

    Overall odds included here

    28/1 1. FC Union Berlin (GER) V 150/1 R. Union Saint-Gilloise (BEL)

20/1 Sevilla FC (ESP) V 100/1 Fenerbahçe SK (TUR)

9/1 Juventus (ITA) V 33/1 SC Freiburg (GER)

40/1 Bayer 04 Leverkusen (GER) V 200/1 Ferencvárosi TC (HUN)

40/1 Sporting Clube de Portugal (POR) V 7/2 Arsenal FC (ENG)

5/2 Manchester United (ENG) V 25/1 Real Betis Balompié (ESP)

16/1 AS Roma (ITA) V 20/1 Real Sociedad de Fútbol (ESP)

50/1 FC Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR) V 50/1 Feyenoord (NED)

Too early for a punt with the draw open after this. On Paddy's day the last 8 get drawn for both the QFs and SFs.

Here's a look at who "needs" to win this to go "up" a competition next season.

Juventus are currently 7th, 12 points outside CL places. AS Roma are 3rd, and in a 5 way competition for 3 places.

In Portugal, Sporting are 4th, but 8 points off the CL spots.

In Germany Freiburg hold the last CL position, 11 points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen.

Finally, in Spain, Real Sociedad are in 3rd place sandwiched between Madrid's two biggest clubs. Real Betis are 5th, 4 points off Atlético.

Sevilla, the 6 times winners are 12 points behind Betis !

Ye it's an interesting one. You'd have expected Dynamo Dresden or Berliner Dynamo to rise up the divisions moreso than Union Berlin

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,023 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

They've a great stadium, and an absolutely fantastic local supporter base, which has given them a bit of an edge I'd say.

Ye don't know much about East German football but Union seemed to be a minnow. Not sure what state the other two I mentioned are in these days, who dominated the league.

Apparently Union and Hertha fans used to be close when the wall was up, and after Hertha helped Union get on their feet and organise in the amalgamated German league structure, but since Union have surpassed them things very bitter now I hear.

Like Royal Union, the history of clubs fascinating I think

El Shaarawy puts Roma ahead against Sociedad. Nice bit of play from Abraham for the assist.

Joaquin starting for Real Betis. I remember buying him on a football manager game over 20 years ago!

Some boyo to be still going. 41!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Second goal for Roma. Looks a good lead for Mourinho to bring to Spain if they can see this out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,855 ✭✭✭irishguitarlad

Weakened team by Pellegrini, this could be an annhilation.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,526 ✭✭✭✭retalivity

Joaquin still playing, he was on the bench for Spain in the WC match vs Ireland in 2022!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

Weghorst is the worst United player I've ever seen. Surprised he didn't miss the 'This is Anfield' sign when he reached out for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,168 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Great goal by Betis. Deserved equaliser. That goal gets better with every replay. Struck on the outside of his right foot bent in off the foot of the left post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,168 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

De Gea is having another stinker. So lucky that Betis didn't score from yet another mistake by him. Betis hit the post.

The keeper and Betis should have known what Antony was going to do there.

    Fernandes. Get in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,168 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

That's awful from Betis. Completely free header from Fernandes on the corner.

    Lead up to Betis goal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,168 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Filthy challenge from Fernandes. Possibly should have been a red card.

Weghorst couldn't hit a dart board.

Ultimate sin for Betis letting that travesty score at the twelfth attempt.
