Partners Audi failed test on extremely minor brake pipe rust up front. Very light surface rust on one side. Seems abit extreme to fail it on that considering it came off with a super fine sandpaper in a few seconds. Mechanic said they will cop on I sanded it off and will fail it again ?

If the rust is gone then they should pass it. I think brake lines is the most common NCT fail item

Thinking of maybe letting the restest period lapse and throw it through again from start to finish, I'm confident it would pass without messing around with changing parts it doesn't need.

Are you certain you have the correct area of the brake pipe? They normally mark the area with white paint. The descriptions can be a bit vague and people often think it's surface rust when the real problem is actually further down the pipe

He said it was at the front of the pipe only, I seen only minor superficial rust there. Didn't see any white markings around it or further down the brake pipe.

Quick blast with sandpaper and get the cheapest aerosol spray can of paint you can find and give it a coat or two.Should pass no bother.

Some else here cleaned their brake lines up and went through a retest and passed that was a few years ago. Happened me as well and they weren't even rusty wiped them down with a cloth and it passed no sanding what so ever.

I cleaned the rust off with some very fine sandpaper and coated the pipe with some light oil to protect from rusting again. Looks brand new now....Nct is rebooked for start of march so we will see how it goes.

Personally give pipe good assessment and make sure it good. Because few years ago like a fool I cleaned brake pipe I knew was rusty before cvrt test put bit stone chip on it ect and it passed but maybe think it was like year half later it burst could have been very serious

Got an earlier retest date, Had the restest this morning, failed again.. same tester. He said no evidence the pipe was cut and had a new piece put into it. Soooo I'm going to let the retest time lapse and test again from start to finish at a different centre.

Can you post a pic of the area in question?

It's basically where the pipe meets the caliper at the front. I'd have to take the wheel off to take a pic of it. Disappointed I got the same tester again who remembered the car... Who knows someone else may have passed it.

You probably should have complained to a supervisor. You don’t need to replace parts, you just need to address the issue. If that was the case then I should have failed every time I used second parts as there was ‘no evidence’ of the part being changed🙄

I argued with him, then he walked off out of the advice desk area leaving me standing there with the fail sheet. I could have complained at the receiption desk afterwards but I didnt want the hassle of it. I'll arrange a full test again when the retest period lapses.

So is it the metal end of the rubber hose thats bolted to the caliper or the steel pipe between the flexi & the abs pump?

The NCT is a complete joke, mine somehow passed with no working break lights, they stopped working the morning of the NCT, out it through in case there was anything else...passed...I couldn't believe it, I had it in the garage getting the brake lights sorted and speaking to the mechanic, he told me that from his experience it's a coin flip in some centres

It is it depends on who you get and you are rightly screwed if they do not like the look of you.

That was quite likely me in a Carina E back in the day. Was quite near Christmas and approaching the re-test date with no garage willing to take it on, would have had to drop the fuel tank, quite specialised job seemingly I was told with flaring tool that only a handful have and at that often leaks after and shutting up shop for Christmas etc.

One of them told me I could go at it with a sandpaper and there may be a small chance it will pass but unlikely. Access was difficult but I went at it with emery cloth, a dremel and brasso and dabbed some paint on after as recall. It genuinely was only light surface tarnish, pipe was absolutely solid underneath. It passed on the retest. I noticed that the brake imbalance differed massively between the original test and the retest which was odd as I never went at the brakes themselves or even changed air pressure in the tyres....says something to me about the poor calibration of their equipment.

The testers dont know who owns the car they are testing. they dont meet them beforehand.

The whole NCT is a joke at this stage.

Its nearly at the stage of why bother.

Not in big centres but in the small nct centres, tester comes out, calls name of car owner, you go to desk, give him keys etc and he goes out and tests the car then the same guy presents the fail / pass at the end.

I reported to a lady at the entrance of the parking lot and was told to stay in the car until the tester would show up. That was in Greenhills.

My car was had a full test last August - six month wait. Booked in for 10:00 am. Left it parked for them at 9:50. Walked up to the waiting room and saw the car move on from the suspension test and onto the lift. My name was called out to collect the keys at 10:05.

Now the car is perfect but that was a joke!

All the five test centres I've been to. Athlone, Castlerea, Westport, Ballina and Tuam. The tester calls your name you go up give keys and log book and then he tests the car and afterwards he calls you up again. You then leave and he calls the next person up and repeat.

Deansgrange in Dublin you check in inside and go wait in your car. Tester comes out and takes your car, you go inside to wait. So there anyway they do see you. On another note, failed recently for a “spongy brake pedal”. Took it to a mechanic because it didn’t feel anything different than it normally is. He said there was nothing wrong with it and had 3 other mechanics drive it and nothing! He said that he had 4 other customers with same failure that week alone! Nothing wrong with them, no work done, all retested and passed! Guess what? My car passed too!
