Cannot wait, Curious to see how Alfa will do since most talk seems to be about Mclaren v Alpine for outside of the usual Red bull, Ferrari and Mercedes chatter, bring it on!!

The main thing I want to see is if Aston Martin have really made a step forward or is it just testing throwing us off.

I wish it was Sunday now. The waiting is the hardest part....

Look on the bright side, one less day to quali which will answer a lot of questions!

I don't know why I'm so excited this year in particular but I am.. I'll be trying to find free practice Friday hopefully

I'm going to make a daring prediction. Alonso will start the race from the front row of the grid.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,752 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Ah sure he did that last year in Canada... 😋

Not exactly a daring prediction but it would not surprise me if a McLaren fails to get out of Q1.

    Nice infographic from Pirelli.

Enjoy the anticipation. We could all feel very different on Sunday evening of Red Bulls lap the field and finish 1-2. Unfortunately it could well happen..... even if Alonso comes third it will be tough to take another season of Verstappen domination.

The coverage in recent years has looked to where the racing is as opposed to following whoever is out front.

Haven't seen a race straight covering the leader of any given race in years. Hopefully that remains the same..

.. even if Alonso comes third it will be tough to take another season of Verstappen domination.

No problem with that at all. Much better than Mercedes and Hamilton constantly dominating. You must be a Lewis and Hamilton fan.

Now give be 5 more seasons of Max and Red Bull winning and I will be bored of it alright.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

F1 fandon isn't as binary as Hamilton or Verstappen, I couldn't care less which of them comes out on top if the battle is as epic as the 2021 season. Though without the politics would be better.

    This too shall pass.

Domination by any driver is unbearably boring. Would love to see a strong showing from the Ferraris this weekend, they have a strong car but you’d imagine they can’t allow any mistakes to even be in with a chance.

AM may well have a good weekend but I can’t imagine them troubling the top 3 over the course of the season.

Anyone here just not like this track?

I dunno if its cos its night time, or just all the long straights .... or because its relatively new to the calendar , but i cant really like it , like i do other tracks .....

I like the track enough but would prefer the Australian race to be the season opener, with the early morning start. I also would have preferred Barcelona preseason testing.

Hopefully it will be a good race

They're 2 of the most boring tracks. Why would you prefer them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,071 ✭✭✭✭greenspurs

Id like Portugal in there instead of any of the Emirati tracks ... Altho Qatar isnt as 'bad' as the other 2 imo...

Imola could be interesting , i love the Azerbaijan circuit.

The Miami (sector 2 especially) and Vegas circuits could be very fast .....

Haha first time I have ever been accused of being a Hamilton fan. Actually I don't have a lot against Max but I see the danger of him dominating for a loooong time. Would love to see one of the Ferrari drivers win this year.... or Alonso of course.

Being able to watch free practice early on a Friday morning 2 or 3am after a long winter. Challenging for the teams too

Having the testing on a track that they will then have the first race at, might mean there are less surprises about how the cars will perform

Here some stats on opening races

    SEASON-OPENING COUNTRIES

    22 Australia

    15 Argentina

    10 Brazil

    9 South Africa

    5 Monaco

    5 Bahrain*

    3 USA

    2 Switzerland

    1 Britain

    1 Netherlands

    1 Austria

I'd take another year of Max domination. And then LeClerc winning next year. And Alonso the next, then he retires for good. 😀

Isn't Australia both an inconvenient time for everyone this side of the world, and a terrible race? It had 3 or 4 DRS zones last year and still poor racing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,497 ✭✭✭✭flazio

Once upon a time, the inconvenient time was part of the charm. Getting up or staying up for the Australian Grand Prix and the Japanese Grand Prix when they bookended the season was actually quite fun.

    This too shall pass.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,900 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

I don't mind the early races. I just watch them 'as live' on the 1pm replay. Just need to avoid spoilers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,499 ✭✭✭McFly85

Got up for Suzuka last year, lesson learned, will record it and watch as soon as I’m up in future!

Well, when I woke up this morning I thought it was Friday. I was going 'Woohoo' and everything, then had a quick look at my phone and well I was no longer 'Woohoo-ing'. Oh well.

Lads...every race is an early race for me. Such is the Canada life.

Please...don't pity me, i do that enough for myself.

I think the fact that it was the first race of the season used to make up for the fact that it was a bad track. You'd never really know what was going to happen, the teams would be on the back foot with a new car on an unfamiliar circuit, and there'd always be surprises. Who could forget Button's serene performance in 2009, that statement of intent from McLaren in 1998, or Webber bursting onto the scene in 2002. Then that would immediately be followed by questions around whether the performances on this unique street circuit would carry over to more traditional tracks.

A lot of the appeal remains for the season opener wherever it is, but when it's at a more standard F1 track where they've already been testing just a week ago, it maybe leaves less to the imagination. And aside from that, Melbourne had just become something of a tradition and the early morning start only added to the sense of occasion.

Must feel a bit strange cracking a beer open in the morning!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,900 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Why do we have to make excuses for bad tracks?

Those 3 instances you mentioned would likely have happened at the first race wherever it was. None of them were about good racing. They were car and driver changes that caused surprises in the first race. Nothing to do with the track.

The track is poor. As much as people give out about about DRS, even all the DRS zones couldn't make interesting racing last year.

F1 doesn't do itself any favours when tried to attract new fans. There was a while when f1 had it's opening race and the most famous race were boring street circuits. Any new fan who tuned in for Australia or Monaco must have been left with the impression F1 was all hype and no action on track.

Free Practice 1 underway chaps, damn it's good to have F1 back. 😎

One of the Alpine's has some aero rake gear on the back of like we saw in testing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,129 ✭✭✭eviltimeban

Alonso already up there. I wonder will the results actually justify the hype?

Would be great to see him fighting with the Mercs and Ferrari. Stroll's car stuck in the garage with issues, ignition problem was mentioned.

  • Moderators, Education Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 11,207 Mod ✭✭✭✭artanevilla

Looks like Aston Martin might be quick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,109 ✭✭✭muckwarrior

It's certainly not slow, although worth noting that Ferrari or Merc didn't set a time on the softs. Worst case scenario I'd say they're 4th fastest. Best case, maybe challenging Ferrari for second.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,534 ✭✭✭✭Vicxas

Aston Martin making Mercedes look over their shoulder would be enough for me this season.

I just want a competitive season at the front.

    FP1 full results .

I have a feeling we might see Alonso on the podium a bit more this season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,499 ✭✭✭McFly85

I’d say the Mercs are probably better than they seemed last week, too.

Think RB will be out in front with Ferrari, Mercedes and AM all in the mix behind them.

    Roll on quali!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,129 ✭✭✭eviltimeban

Stroll went ok considering it was his first time in the car, and any car, this year.
