I think The IRFU tried to force 7s competitions on the Women's AIL teams as a term of participation. Instead of trying to grow the current 7s comps and it's ended up doing more harm than good.

Teams moved away from the big tournaments and the club tournaments never took off

I cant remember exactly how it went. but as with so much of governance/management of womens game. handled badly from all angles.

A series with existing tournaments and add a few more in other areas around country could be class. tie in decent music or anything else and draw good crowd. would be cool to see. Clifden, Kinsale, Dublin, Carrick, Athlone maybe 1/2 more venues

Has anyone picked up any tickets to the sevens events at the Olympics in 2024? I see a multi-pack pre-sale opened recently, interested to see what sessions and prices are looking like.

Ireland men beat Uruguay 7-0 in their opening game of LA 7s

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,373 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I didn't get to see it but seven points in a 7's game is very odd. Was there some crazy weather or something?

aIreland put down Canada 22-0 and South Africa 14-5 to top their group booking a quarter final against Australia.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,005 ✭✭✭SaoPaulo41

Lots of delays due to torrential rain, pitch was a mess. we beat Canada 20-0 in next game and Sth Africa in final pool game.

We play Aus in 1/4s this evening

I seen that game, Conroy put on a great show with tries and slides. 😁

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

I didn't see the match but it looks like Ireland took a 31-7 hammering against Australia. Ireland to play Great Britain in the 5th place playoff later.

Yeah, outplayed, very little possession, lots of penalties and a yellow card. Conroy made his usual solo try from nothing but otherwise pretty poor show. That said Oz are a very good team.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,968 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

As ersatz said they got outplayed with the penalties being a major issue. I'm far from a sevens expert but it seems like they're missing Terry Kennedy big time, and looks to me like a less individually talented and athletic team than we've had up to now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

Kennedy was a genuine star at 7s and we really miss him.

Sometimes it feels like we lose too many players from our sevens squad because the money isn't there to keep them. There's a constant drain of 3-5 players a year retiring.

Need to figure out how to monetise 7s so salaries can be increased or else we will be a middling sevens team that can produce good runs on occasion.

Just lost 12-5 to GB leaving us as finishing 7-8 place.

The men arecthrough to the semi-final where they will play Argentina

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,373 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Frustrating call by the ref at the very end, especially as he had just penalised Argentina for a similar offence moments before.

Tough group for men's in HK7S

    Ireland, NZ,Kenya , SA

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,373 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

I thought they were seeded as in you can only have two top 8 sides per group?

I think the seeding works based on the result of the last tournament.

    So on that basis it's

    Ireland 4th

    New Zealand 5th

    Kenya 10th

    South Africa 13th

Opening 7-14 loss to South Africa.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,373 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Damnit, got up to watch it then got a phonecall and forgot all about it. I suppose it's not so bad as they lost.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,043 ✭✭✭Lost Ormond

Women lost 17-7 to Fiji and lost 19-12 to Australia

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

Women in the 5th place semi final against France.

The men are in a 9th place quarter final against Canada.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

The Irish women lost to France 26-14 and will play USA in the 7th place playoff.

The men beat Uruguay 31-7 and will play Samoa in the 9th place playoff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 38,373 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Two teams in the men's that you wouldn't expect to be playing for a lowly ninth.

The women were in a tough group.

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,599 ✭✭✭✭CIARAN_BOYLE

The group is based on the finish from the last event. The women are a 3rd seed again after their 8th place finish.

Can Ireland qualify for Olympics via hsbc tour ? Or is there a separate qualification event ? If so would it be a euro qualification tournament, we should get in that way with France already qualified.
