Ryan Tubridy to step down from Late Late role when season ends

She would end up annoying the guests in any serious debate the way she goes on constantly cutting them off before they have a chance to answer, thats all right with TDs and Ministers but a guest on a chat show wouldn't put up with that kind of thing.

The Ray D'Arcy Show was so stuck for guests I was invited on it to discuss my petition to end the Fair City story about Katy being locked in her box.

Terribly embarrassing on my behalf I know.

Not a fan of Tubs and not a fan of TLLS.

Unlikely that RTÉ would axe TLLS, simply because it is the show that remains relatively ok, and it remains a stalwart of RTÉ's programming... this is not a complement to TLLS or Tubs, TLLS has brand and swimming in an ocean of nothingness from RTÉ it can stand tall, regardless of who is presenting the series in its current lifecycle its a buoy for other content, much like Fair City and the News.

With all the best wishes to Tubs... what does he do next? In terms of television it has been not great for Pat Kenny, and even Tubs time in the mid-morning slot on 2FM should have clearly shown Tubs that he doesn't have star power and that Radio 1 and TLLS roles buoyed his later career. In fairness to Tubs both The Full Irish on 2FM and Tubrity Tonight were refreshing for their time but since his move to Radio 1 and TLLS he has stagnated and I'd even say he's bored.

This leaves RTÉ with a new TV show for Tubrity that will possibly fail... or it will be a series of historic docs that RTÉ can point to as being "Public Service Broadcasting" at its best leaving Tubs in a pseudo-Micheal Portillo role travelling the country looking at "Ireland: sure begorrah and be the hokey", those docs will eventually disappear into the ether like many other celeb driven docs from RTÉ that have gone before it.

Tubs possibly thinks it will be a breeze without TLLS, I imagine it will be harder than he suspects and if Newstalk play their cards right they can significantly take his audience from Radio.

Best of luck to him but I am reminded of Simon Dee.

I doubt he would go for it. LLS audience is far too parochial for him.

It needs a complete revamp and get away from the sh*te Irish "celebrities" they have on. Honestly it's like they do the rounds of the RTE canteen on a Wednesday afternoon looking for guests. That and the pure misery guest/GAA guest that fill in the other slot.

My issue with the LLS in particular is that it thrives on bad news. Every personal struggle, tragedy, mental health issue, disability etc is trotted out and explained ad nausem.

It reinforces popular consensus instead of challenging it, which is what Gay Byrne was famous for.

Gay Byrne and Pat Kenny used to have better international guests.

Any time I tune into the LLS, it's always C list celebrities from Irish soaps and reality programmes mixed with inevitable sob stories that are not remotely suitable for a Friday night entertainment show.

Those dancing Gardai during Covid, well that was it for me. A new low was reached.

And the party political broadcasts from politicians. Not suitable for an entertainment show.

Not a hope they’d get Dara. I agree it will be a woman, I’d bet on Claire Byrne if I was a betting man. I don’t think they’ll shelve it. Too big a brand for RTE.

I don't think the show should end, for all its faults it's a unique type of chat-show that isn't replicated anywhere else that I can think of and it is a National Institution. Yeah, maybe some rejigging of the format - but I still think TLLS is worth preserving.

Tubridy going might be the greatest thing that could happen to it. He wasn't cut out in any shape or form to present a show like that. It's not an easy job tbf: it's live TV in front of an audience, for over two hours, with constant 180 turns in terms of content and tone. Most people would struggle, but Tubridy just never came across genuinely and always seemed a bit tone-deaf, in a rush and uptight. I suspect he's a funnier and smarter man than the version of himself he portrayed on the show, it's a pity he didn't feel the confidence to display that a bit more often.

I think the trinity of Joe Duffy's from Apre Match should present the Late Late Show.

Can't really comment on Ryan and the LLS as haven't watched it since he took over, bar the odd cringey bit of toy show. Would he give up the radio slot as well?
