Sarah McInnerny would be a good shout.

I totally agree squonk, it's just that's not the way it works in Montroisa - Sarah McInerny should be on the 'Today with...' radio show, but she isn't.

TBH I'm baffled as to the audience is supposed to be for anything on RTE these days. Very little to appeal to anyone apart from the "stuck in a nursing home with no remote" audience. I'm in the 50-ish demographic and would rather stick forks in my eyes.

    Scrap the cap!

yes i have avoided it like the plague for years. even the ads on irish tv are unbearable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,760 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

I'm definitely in favour of the concept of a publicly funded broadcaster but RTE is an utter failure and has been for years. Everything they do is shít and they are so far up their mutual arseholes they all think it's fantastic.

    Scrap the cap!

Eh where exactly was I transphobic or indeed mysoginistic? I think you need to take a chill pill with your accusations and stop getting personal. It’s bloody obvious to all that a female will be the next LLS presenter- public opinion no less the bookies dictate that-so my post was based on that fact - so calm down dear and have a word with whatever moderator reviews my post report because reporting your post I am

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,760 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

    G'luck with that

it’s your sex- had you announced that you were now transitioning to female, changed your name to Brenda and started to wear Alexander McQueen and Jimmy Cho, you’d probably be a “shoe-in”- pun intended- the next presenter of TLLS will definitely be female- there’s no doubt about that.

    Just banter eh??

    Scrap the cap!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,187 ✭✭✭Oscar_Madison

The next presenter of TLLS will be a female- how the fck is that either transphobic or mysoginistic?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,149 ✭✭✭amacca

It's exceptionally hard to think of anyone that would make a success of it tbh

Never mind someone I'd like to see presenting it

It feels like a format that's running on fumes or circling a drain at this point, it's not like they have a semi captive audience like they used to

I know it doesn't speak well of me but I felt happy Tubridy was **** off even though Id rarely tune in anyway...I wouldn't feel particularly positive about any of the proposed replacements...

It's time to put down the old nag if you ask me.

I'd tune in if someone like David mc savage was given a budget and allowed insult (subtly or otherwise) the great and good of the Irish "celebrity" carousel and whatever international celebrities the budget would cover but you know it would be a short lived albeit potentially glorious affair.

You obviously don't listen to his radio show then.

He left Ballsy behind a long time ago. Now loves the mental health and trying to stop his guests anytime they say anything controversial.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,187 ✭✭✭Oscar_Madison

I always wondered why his show was canned- my own view was because he showed up TLLS as a pathetic imitation of The Brendan O’ Connor show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,187 ✭✭✭Oscar_Madison

I’d agree except it would put countless boardsies out of a job on a Friday night 😛

But yeah, unless you have control around the “vision” of TLLS for the 21st century which let’s face it, neither the plank nor Tubridy had, it’s just going to be a cash cow for RTÉ management propped up with adds for Renault cars and Aer Lingus

Panti Bliss another name tossed about

I think Katie Hannon would be the best female choice.

I think Brendan o Connor would be a good host or else go for a female host

Brendan has a good sense of humour but he can also talk about serious subjects

I can't see rte getting rid of the late late show it still gets good ratings for the toy show the problem is we have a limited no of Irish celebs .most big movie stars comedians appear on the Graham Norton show why would someone like Tom cruise or Adele bother appearing on the late late show?

In the 70s ,80s the late late show was very popular and important it was the first show to discuss subjects like contraception divorce etc or other topical subjects on Irish TV

Now most people have cable TV broadband and tik tok YouTube or Netflix

The late late show is just another talk show it's not as important as it used to be

The few times I watched it Ryan tubridy he seemed like a good presenter

I think rte will keep it going I think they just need a good presenter male or female pick the best they can get that would attract a mainstream audience

I think the late late show is not an easy gig eg it only seems to be able to get Irish celebs actors as guests top A list celebs appear on American talk shows or Graham Norton it's well past its prime

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,187 ✭✭✭Oscar_Madison

Hope she’s doing ok but Mammy O’ Rourke would have been a super LLS presenter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,187 ✭✭✭Oscar_Madison

Panti Bliss with Vincent Browne in his hey day - would be a feickin awesome duo

    Ffs it'll be grim.

Doireann "staap it will ye" garrihy

Miriam " genuinely minister" o callaghan

    Scare byrne

    Good night.

John creedon would be a great choice. Unassuming, down to earth.

Basically not a pr1ck or a cnut. Thats why he wont get it.

And please, please. Don’t nobody say, ever, that only after he’s gone will he be mussed… about as much charisma as a scabby toenail

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,718 ✭✭✭Gusser09

Its been done in the uk with lily savage/ paul ogrady years ago.

Rte cant pull the stroke and think they are breaking some of new ground.

Lottie Ryan I say!!! We want Lottie. We want Lottie…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,165 ✭✭✭Lewis_Benson

Is that show still on the air?

Gay Byrne presented it last time I tuned in

The Job her father got only once - always wondered what Gerry would have made of TLLS had he got his “turn” - he certainly wanted the job that Kenny got - that was back in the day when a combination of seniority and “playing the game” was valued highly by RTÉ - I wouldn’t rule Lottie out in the future but right now, I reckon it will be a Claire Byrne gig

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,556 ✭✭✭✭BorneTobyWilde

It's a role for an unknown, that's who Gay was when he got it, it's a role you make your own. They should give it to some young and talented who no one has ever seen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,402 ✭✭✭AyeGer

    Patrick Kielty would be decent.

Its going to be a woman though i'd be fairly sure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,187 ✭✭✭Oscar_Madison

Dave Letterman has presented since - dang you missed that

  • Registered Users Posts: 823 ✭✭✭MattressRick

No point trying to copy Graham Norton with the super craic because it's not possible to better that show, and there's no money in rte for good guests.

I wish they could go back to the style Gay Byrne once had with guests staying on and getting involved in lively chats. And have the audience ask questions too. Even someone phoning in a question! Brendan o Connor would be the best equipped for curveballs.

But they will definitely give it to a woman I think.

Probably gonna be Miriam or Claire Byrne. I think Miriam would be best suited to a new format. Doireann Garrihy hasn't earned her stripes yet at serious depressing interviews.

I think this current season of Tommy Tiernan has killed his chances. He mulls over questions for too long.

But back to my favoured pick, if I'm imagining Roy Keane sitting there I think Brendan o Connor would be the ballsiest interviewer.

Needs to do away with the misery bullshit.

I like the format where all the guests stay around for the show. Makes it more interesting. Don't need to bring them all on together at the start but have them hang around after interview.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87,878 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

If a woman is getting it then maybe Lucy Kennedy or is she tied to Virgin Media

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,170 ✭✭✭mobby

Lay the odds it will be Female.

Have become a Fan of Drivetime in the evening and I think that  Sarah McInerney is a very good interviewer and has a good sense of humor and might suit the role, and her co-presenter Cormac Ó hEadhra would also not be a bad choice. Unlikely to happen though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 823 ✭✭✭MattressRick

Definitely not polished enough for rtes flagship. They'd be terrified of the liveline complaints every Monday because she's talked about her t**ts yet again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,978 ✭✭✭sporina

    twill prob be Claire Byrne..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,349 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

Yes, good idea. So much to celebrate about women and being a woman ! 🙄😜

Jeez half way to March and people are bangin on about a woman vs a man. Old hairy chestnut.

    . Why not both?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,808 ✭✭✭squonk

Yes, great suggestions here that the guests could come on as they’re rostered but stay on like Gay used to do. A great format and also an out for the host at times as well. A political is getting bogged? Get the comedian sitting across from you to listen things up with a witty remark and get the back rolling again. That time they rang the poor woman who had lost somebody that day I think maybe and Gay asked Brendan Keneally for a few words was great and while Gay could have carried it, it turned sobering awful into simmering a bit better. I’d hate to have seen what would have happened were Tubbs in a similar position.

Really though, if, as seems very likely, Claire Byrne or Miriam O’Callaghan are going to be the best names RTE can come up with them really, fûck it! Let it die because Miriam is oversaturated at this stage and her f a ke sincerity is awful and I wouldn’t leave Claire Byrne entertaining a morgue!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,050 ✭✭✭hamburgham

It will continue its downward trajectory if CB gets it. Lightweight, no real intelligence and would toe the line all the way.

May the best candidate win. The show needed a major shakeup. It is very depressing and not a lot of fun. Lets hope it gets back to some form of its past glory.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,808 ✭✭✭squonk

Agreed it’s gotten awfully depressing. Nobody needs that after w week’s work on a Friday night. Definitely needs a shakeup and pretty quick too. It’sRTE though so there’s no chance of the best candidate getting to within an asses roar of the races let alone the finish line

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,558 ✭✭✭quinnd6

Miriam wasn't on Prime Time tonight. I wonder does that mean she was celebrating her new undisclosed job at the late late.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,808 ✭✭✭squonk

Hope not. I don’t remember her summer shows being anything spectacular. she doesn’t deserve the gig based on that performance

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87,878 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

    Bring on Dustin and Jedward

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,558 ✭✭✭quinnd6

Yes and she subbed for Ryan when he had COVID and was terrible but it's RTE they gave Ray D'Arcy the Saturday night slot and he was brutal. RTE don't care about what the viewers want to see.

Not to mention that Oweful Accent.

Whoever they get they should keep it a temp contract and have something similar to a Boards poll every six weeks.. No, fvck it

They should have a Boards Poll to decide! 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,808 ✭✭✭squonk

I think they need to go outside the organisation for this. RTE don’t really have a lot of fresh young faces in high profile positions and those who are seem jaded by the time they get to the front running for something like this.

Maybe it’s because I was too young to really notice but at one stage it seemed there was a lot of young talent in RTE and they were spoilt for choice with regards to presenters. Then the rot seemed to set in around the mid 90s and now we have a bunch of lifers who should have been shown the door years ago coming back to the trough year after year and the younger talent don't get a look in the door.

i know the media landscape has changed since the 90s too with independent tv and radio stations showing them competition and competing for on air talent but the organisation as a whole needs a massive shake up at this stage. The LLS is kind of a reflection of RTE itself now.

I agree ... the Late Late Show won't change just because Ryan Tubridy is no longer doing it ... the cronyism and emphasis on smuttiness airheadedness and boybands will continue ... The guests like Imelda May Maeve/Maura/whatever she is called Higgins Alison Spittle Westlife Boyzone etc will continue no matter who gets the job ... might as well give it to Nicky Byrne and be done with it !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,865 ✭✭✭podgeandrodge

    Haven't read the thread.

My view - get a complete unknown that, through some independent process, displays some form of independent thought and balls, and give him (yes, him in my view unless we get a real game changing female) the job and try him out. No more RTE picking someone who was a daughter or brother or mother of someone that once mattered, Gay Byrne was not a celeb when he got the job. Let's give someone really authentic and unknown a chance. And save the licence payer a fortune, cos Tubs was not worth whatever he was paid.

Don't know if it's been said already but I reckon Darragh o Brian would be good. Smart: knows science, funny: comedian, Current Affairs: mock the week background. Could cover most topics
