Like others above I got an Eir sim and then off to Vodafone store and got the 6a for €249.99. They didn't make me get a top up. Gonna set up the phone shortly, just backing up my old phone first!

Just another question as I haven't had a Google phone before. Is there no local photos app? Seems they are all just going to the Google photos app. I'm coming from a Xiaomi so that had its own Gallery app then also you could set it up they they saved to Google Photos.

Also, I did a data transfer from phone to phone and some Mi apps transferred over. Had to uninstall them. Presume it just transferred over whatever apps were on the phone even some Mi apps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

It's pure android. Google photos is the default app. You can install something different if you don't like it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭chops018

Ok thanks. No it's fine, Google Photos is perfect. Pretty much all of my last phone was based around the Google apps and some of the Xiaomi apps were annoying. Reason for the change was I wasn't allowed to view videos anymore on my Redmi Note 10 Pro unless I agreed to give Mi Video access to storage etc. After I updated the system. It never previously needed that.

Anyway I see on Google Photos now there is a camera section for just looking at the locally stored photos and videos on the phone!

"Reason for the change was I wasn't allowed to view videos anymore on my Redmi Note 10 Pro unless I agreed to give Mi Video access to storage etc"

That was a change in how permissions work in the new version of Android you updated to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭chops018

Ah ok, I got a bit paranoid! I know it's just the Mi apps, not some random ones, and the Xiaomi phones are sold by networks here but it never came up before. I did notice the likes of Snapchat and other camera apps after the update were asking for similar permissions.

Also, I had been thinking of getting a Pixel phone anyway and this along with the good offer offer for the 6a with Vodafone (I think €249.99 is good anyway) I said I'd go for it.

Enjoying the 6a so far. Camera seems better, but I think the Note 10 Pro might look a bit better user wise (more colours). Otherwise not much of a difference really between the two as the Xiaomi work from the Google apps mostly with some of their own then. The 6a is slightly smaller which doesn't bother me too much.

One thing I did notice - we have SIRO at home and the wifi speeds off the 6a are double what they were on the Redmi.

Phone feels quite hot at the back even with light use. I read online this can be an issue. Did all the updates so the phone is now up to date. Some say it takes a few days to feel normal. Anyone else have this issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

On my 4a5g I've only noticed it getting hot when on the dash on a super hot day day 30c+. Where it actually started to act weird until I let it cool down.

We have a 6a in the house and never had it get warm. Not yet anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭chops018

Thanks for the reply. Still getting hot, even after a few minutes of browsing on Chrome, it's the back that gets hot (not boiling but it heats up as if I'm playing a game that requires a lot of processor use).

I did read it can happen for the first few days so will see.

I checked all the settings, and made sure some apps were restricted, so it's not like there are any apps that are running in the background using up the hardware. Hoping it sorts in a few days, as currently it feels like a phone that can't handle simple processes, it feels like the way my iphone 6s did years ago when I had it over two years and I needed a change after having it so long as it got hot easily after light use.

Also, the battery is low and it was at 100% at 8am this morning. I thought it would have been around 50% at this stage (previous phone was and it was over a year old). In saying that I did put through a few updates this morning so maybe it was that.

Another comment - phone doesn't come with a wall charger. For now I'm using the charger I had with my Xiaomi which is 22.5w fast charger. But don't think the 6a has fast charging as it is saying 3 hours to full charge. I'm used to fast charging now.

    Thinking of ordering this:

    https://store.google.com/product/usb_c_30w_charger?hl=en-US

Will it work as stated as a fast charger? I see cheaper non brands on Amazon. Would they be an option?

Above one is from Google store on Amazon!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Did you look it up? It does support fast charging.

The Pixel 6a usually charges from 0 to 100% in around 1 hour and 52 minutes. The Pixel 6a supports up to 18W of wired fast charging speed

If you install Ampere you will see what current you get when charging. The Xiaomi charger should be good enough. Check different USB cables. The fatter the better. If its an old cable, thats been bent a lot, it might no longer be able to do the full charger.

I get faster charging speeds on the Pixel Phone from our Xiaomi (33w) charger than our (18W) Pixel one. But it not as quick our Xiaomi phone which supports 33W. The Pixel only supports 18W.

I know my Pixel some times very rarely goes into a slow charging mode. Rebooting it get it back to full speed.

    Thanks!

Yeah it's not as bad as I thought. Nearly charged now on 22.5w charger. Just thought it might not have fast charging but as you say it's max is probably 18w.

Might buy an 18w one on Amazon to try it out and have as a spare if the Xiaomi ones are charging it better.

Edit: @Flinty997 - I downloaded that app you mentioned and it says it's charging at 1280 mA. Upon googling conversion that's only 1.28w which is fairly slow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Is that with a decent USB cable?

Just checked with my 18w and the 6a is getting 2100mA. But it's at 87% and it slows down at it gets closer to 100%.

My 4a5G is getting 3400mA on the same charger because it's only 50%. On the Xiaomi charger I'm getting 3690mA.

I know these are with decent USB cables though. And your Xiaomi charger is different to mine.

There are load of different fast charging standards. The charger and the phone have to the same standard to get the best specs. I've bought a few chargers from Amazon that claim to be fast chargers but aren't.

But bad cables play a part in it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭chops018

The USB cable seems fine. Not bent or anything.

I read online the fast chargers for pixels work better when it's USB-C to USB-C whereas the chargers I have are USB-C to USB-A to the actual plug.

I'll order a plug from Amazon with a USB-C port and then use the USB-C cable that came with the phone.

Also when I was using the app for measuring the mA the charge was at 80% so maybe that's why it had lowered!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

I've never found the type of cable makes a difference just the quality. You won't know if it's 100% by looking at it. Only by testing.

The cable I got the highest current on tonight is USB-A to USB-C. It's noticably thicker than cheap cables. This one came with the Xiaomi phone. The Pixel cables are decent though.

You're really looking for the thickest shortest cable.

Get a decent case. Very easy to crack the screens on pixels imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭chops018

Thanks @Flinty997 for all the tips.

Case is on the way but it's just a cheap one from Amazon so maybe I'll get a better one soon.

Ordered this also so I'll try it with the USB-C to USB-C Google cables that came with the phone and hopefully it's fast charging so I have that option too. Very annoying you don't get a plug!

Still, for 249.99 it's a great price for the phone, the camera seems great with the OIS (the Xiaomi didn't have that, so even though it had 108mp it's not as good camera wise, no 5g on the Xiaomi I had either).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

The Xiaomi we have has the 108 and OIS. It can take some great photos some of the time. But the pixel takes better photos almost all the time. Especially in bad light. For the price the camera is amazing.

Any recommendations? Could save me some googling

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Usually something like Spigen. But getting decent cases for Android phones, and pixels is quite hard. Lot of cheap rubbish out there. A lot of the decent ones aren't available in Ireland. The one I got for the 6a is quite girly. The ones I got for earlier pixels are no longer available.

Looking at buying the pixel 6a. I see vodafone are doing it for 249euro but its out of stock. Any ideas where I can get for similar price? Googling im getting 320 euro or more. I'm with eir prepay and want to stick with them. Don't mind getting the pixel unlocked if needs be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,674 ✭✭✭wassie

Pixel won't be locked. But for the last few years VF has been the cheapest retailer of the Pixel A series. Hopefully they will get more stock prior to sale ending.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,748 ✭✭✭Bluefoam

I was told by one of the staff that they were end of line... That was a couple of weeks ago. Some shops had one unit at the time, some had none...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,674 ✭✭✭wassie

Pixel 6a is still in production as the 7a is still yet to be released. 6a was only released in the middle of last year and was August before we started seeing orders shipped, so it will be on sale for some time to come. Whether VF get more stock in is anyones guess really.

Waiting on Vodafone to get it back in stock. They sell it for 299 but will reduce it to 249 if you switch to them. I have no plan on switching provider but to get this extra discount do they simply just give ypuna vodafone sim card and a pixel that is possibly locked. I'd just dump the vodafone sim card and get the phone unlocked in a non vodafone shop??? I presume if its locked vodafone wouldn't unlock it straight away for me as I got that discount???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,748 ✭✭✭Bluefoam

You'll have to buy a 3 sim for €10-20, then buy €20 of Vodafone credit to get the offer, I decided the hassle was worth a tenner and I just paid the €299

  • Registered Users Posts: 139 ✭✭owen85

Yea its sounding like a bit of hassle. I'm with eir already so wouldn't need to buy. Getting the unlocked will prob bring the price up anyway to 299.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,748 ✭✭✭Bluefoam

They come unlocked... At least mine did

  • Registered Users Posts: 139 ✭✭owen85

Vodafone omni shopping centre told me today they won't get it back in stock as the phone has been discontinued and was also recalled.

Pixel 6A back in stock at Vodafone for €250.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,799 ✭✭✭rizzee

7a out on the 10th. Keep an eye on VF for good "porting" deals.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,343 ✭✭✭pizzahead77

€519.99 payg on Vodafone with free Pixel A buds - €10 more expensive than the Irish Google Store. No "deals" yet by the looks of things

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,674 ✭✭✭wassie

Pixel Buds A Series offer is also available on irish Google store.

Just created a separate thread for Pixel 7a here

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,799 ✭✭✭rizzee

Yeah, usually pop up within a couple of weeks of release.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,674 ✭✭✭wassie

Same deal can be had on Google Store i.e. freee Pixel Buds A-Series for €509

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,799 ✭✭✭rizzee

    6A now at 199!

I got a 6a, great phone but really slow charge. I was using an old usb cable and generic plug and getting 1000 ma. I then tried using the cable that came with it and plugged into my work docking station getting 1900ma. Finally tried the cable with my wife's pixel 3a plug and it's at 2900ma which is probably the most I'm going to get? Looks like I'll have to buy one of those plugs unless better recommendation?

Also, I really miss the notification led. I tried an app notifybuddy but it doesn't work half the time.

I actually miss my OnePlus 3 phone even though it was ancient, it was the best phone I had but the new OnePlus phones are mad money.

Got the 6a in Vodafone tallaght today for €199 and didn't need to buy credit. Using it on my Eir sim with no issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,676 ✭✭✭mondeo

Been using the phone alot for the past day. Few things about it bother me. Phone gets really hot while charging, I was video calling for about an hr on it and it also got seriously hot especially on the left side. The phone generally heats up even with casual use browsing the net etc. I know these tensor chips are known to get hot but this seems abit excessive. Seems this is a common thing with the 6a and the other 6 models since they all share the same processor.

The battery life is abit sketchy compared to my old Xiaomi 11 and it takes bloody ages to charge to. June 2023 security patch applied. Anyone else experience these issues ? In saying this the phone hasn't shown any over heating warnings and shut itself down, it performs really well, it just gets uncomfortably hot.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Haven't had any of these issue with the 6a in our house. It gets warm, but not that bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,819 ✭✭✭lertsnim

My 6 Pro was also very hot when I first got it. Was told it was normal and would right itself in a few days. And it did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,676 ✭✭✭mondeo

Going to give it a few days and see if it settles down. Enable/disable a few apps to see if something installed is causing the problem. Might try a factory reset as a last resort.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,676 ✭✭✭mondeo

Charged my 6a to 100% last night, woke up this morning to find I had 56% battery left.... In battery usage it said "phone idle" had consumed 47% of my battery as I slept. Not sure what is going on here ?

Did you recently do an update? It could be related to that. Drain like that is also often related to network issues. Were you connected to WiFi or mobile data?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,793 ✭✭✭✭Flinty997

Some times the health and activity trackers don't sleep.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,676 ✭✭✭mondeo

Always connected to WiFi at the house. When I setup this phone I cable tethered it to my old Xiaomi and Google automatically transferred all my apps and photos to my 6a. I'm thinking of factory resetting as a fresh start and manually download all my apps and copy paste all my photos to the phone instead of letting Google automatically do it. Maybe something went wrong during the data transfer and its messed things up and that's why Im having various issues :/.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,676 ✭✭✭mondeo

From day one I did all the system updates to bring it up to latest security patch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,458 ✭✭✭chops018

@mondeo I got the 6a a while back when the deal was €249.99.

Had similar issues to what you're describing for the first week or so. But then it settled down and it's all fine now.

I got a 30w fast charging Belkin plug and it charges really quickly. Battery is now fine. Get a full day from it with medium use. I turned off the adaptive charging option.
