Ban on Creosote Posts

Hi all,

Apologies if there is already a thread for this topic Mods.

Just wondering if people are stockpiling creosote posts before they are all sold from Farming Stores yards.

Like any farmer knows you are never 'finished' fencing land as inevitably if parcels of your land were fenced in the new at different times, the posts will be gradually rotting on some part of land iykwim.

May well be late to the party but if they can be got I'm thinking of buying say 150 creosote posts.....as they will be needed to replace odd posts here and there on land over next few years. Going by media reports it's going to be several years before alternative posts with a decent shelf life are available.

I bought about 200 after Christmas. They're gone a crazy price, I was quoted 15 quid a steak but eventually got them from a local supplier for closer to 10. These are 6' by 4" and heavily creosoted.

Everyone is talking about what treatment can be given to a timber post.

Maybe we should look toward using naturally durable timbers that don't need toxic treatments.

I've only ever used creosote posts for strainer, turn or similar so no panic here. Will replace them with steel or fabricated concrete. Panicking about creosote will only put money in other people's pockets.

As far as I know this is a Europe wide ban, in which case the UK won’t be affected. This will mean stakes will still be available in the north. While it won’t be practical for everyone to pop up to the north every time they need stakes, it should be possible for a few neighbours to arrange a load between them.

I've 500 bought from the co-op - (assuming they arrive before its illegal to sell them) otherwise I have about 100 left in the yard at the moment.

That's not a lot on a fragmented sheep/cattle farm though.

I think the UK is following suit with the eu soon enough so lads bringing them from the north will be a short term affair I'd imagine.

€12 a post inc vat in frs for 6 foots, 4 to 5 inch a week ago.were a little along with 9 inc vat before Christmas. Absolute profiteering going on somewhere on them.

I suppose what else might ya expect from fellow irish men, given the circumstances.

Jaysus that’s bad form…..I suppose we are asleep at the wheel not to have bought back when the word came out they were being banned but it’s hard to be organised enough and have funds to do these things straight off.

Don't panic. Start making a few concrete posts on a wet day. Like these lads. Would some one give them a pair of Wellingtons before they walk on something

Having worked in places like this, I can tell you they wouldnt have the wellies on two minutes before the stanley knife was out and they'd made flip flops out of them. Steel toe boots were another no-go - tie the laces ones then bend down and cut out the back of them so they could be slip on.
