So what you're saying older bonds are going to get fewer prizes, so basically would you advise cashing in bonds from the 1980s nearly 40 years old and well buried at the bottom of the pile.

Nothing for me this week, nothing won in 2023 so far.

No. I'm saying that the 116 million bonds bought in the first 45 years, are not going to win as many prizes as the 700 million bonds bought in the last 8 years. But every individual bond has the same chance, so hold on to yours.

Nothing for me. 386829 from 1957 won €50. Just two numbers away from a winner which was never claimed. But probably two different people, since a bond was a weeks wages for many back then.

    For 386000 - 387000

Prize Bond Number Prize Value Status

    386185 €75.00 Unclaimed i

    386231 €100.00 Unclaimed i

    386380 €75.00 Unclaimed i

    386562 €50.00 Unclaimed i

    386820 €75.00 Uncashed i

    Nothing in over 5 years.

With 25k in PBs the current thinking is to cash out and move to UK Premium Bonds. Odds of 24,000:1 for a £1 bond per monthly draw is a lot better than 158,000:1 in the weekly draw, which equates to 36,600:1 per month for a €6.25 bond. The UK return is 3.3% of the fund V's a miserable 0.35% here.

€50 win from bonds issued last july

Last Friday another €50 and the bond numbers were just 213 apart. They were from the same issue. Anybody get closer on bond numbers?

It happens all the time, but apart from myself, there is probably nobody else here that examines the results to see things like that. I post about some of the ones I notice now and again.

I just did a random check of unclaimed prizes, and you can see where it could be quite common. The unclaimed prizes are just a tiny percentage of the overall. Plenty of people are bound to have bonds where individual numbers won more than once.

    For A100000 - A110000 (10,000 bonds from 1950's, approx 50 prizes not claimed.)

Prize Bond Number Prize Value Status

    A101042 €50.00 Unclaimed i

    A101042 75.00 Unclaimed i

    A107243 €75.00 Unclaimed i

    A107244 €75.00 Unclaimed i

    A108742 €50.00 Unclaimed i

    A108742 €50.00 Unclaimed i

That seems extremely unlucky that you haven't had a single win in all that time for that many bonds. I'm averaging about 1 or 2 wins each year for every 25K worth of bonds that I hold.

My closest was a win in May 2017 and another win in May 2019 where the numbers were 2 apart !!

I ran a check on all the "prizes" I've "won" and the following are the ones where the winning numbers were less than 100 apart. I've masked the bond numbers to an extent.

That's a very interesting post. It clearly outlines the difference between the UK and Ireland very well. I guess it's the difference between living in a stable economic environment and a banana republic kingdom.

How could a prize bond win not be claimed in earlier posts ? do they not just send a cheque out if you win ?

Some people never cashed their cheques, and the Prize Bond Company have to carry them as Uncashed liablities in the annual accounts. If the letter with the cheque came back undelivered, and they were unable to trace the person, that would be Unclaimed.

The money is always there for someone to claim. It is around €3 million since 1957, and that compares well with unclaimed Lottery prizes of around €20 million a year. You only get 90 days to claim a Lottery prize.

They don't send out cheques any more. You nominate a bank account for the winnings, or choose to get new bonds. But with winners from every decade since the 1950's in every draw, some will probably go into Unclaimed.

I have money from a house sale. Went to post office to see how I could buy €25k worth of prize bonds. Was told the only way that could be done was by cheque(which i don't have) or by bank draft.....I'd imagine a bank draft for that amount would be expensive. Is that the only way I can buy that amount of prize bonds? I thought in this day and age I'd be able to do an EFT transfer....

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,535 ✭✭✭jaffa20

Do you not have to be a UK resident to purchase these? I'd be tempted also. I've only won 50euro in 3 years on 30k.

  • Registered Users Posts: 626 ✭✭✭lordleitrim

Once you set up a prize bond account on statesavings.ie you can purchase prize bonds online. Having an online account also allows you to track your bonds and prizes easily too.

Alternatively, bank drafts will only cost a few euro (a fiver at most) to issue no matter the amount of the draft so I wouldn't let that put you off.
