Rifle re barrel

is there anyone in Ireland who currently fits rifle barrels. I think the barrel my stalking rifle is coming towards the end of its days. Thanks in advance

Some uk shops sell spare barrels for shotguns anyway so i assume its the same for rifles worth looking up your gun model on a few of those gun sites and check around you will need to get a import permit though or get a shop to import it for you.

The next question is it worth doing?

Some rifles like Steyr are notoriously difficult to re-barrel and are a factory job as the barrel is sweated into the receiver. Others like Remington are easy enough as it is a threaded barrel action that just needs to be properly headspaced at the end. So you might want to check first is it an economical project? Also,do you know what the round count is on the rifle?Its very unusual for a hunting rifle to have a shot-out barrel, unless it is a very old rifle or someone was target shooting with it.Or it's a barrel-burning calibre like 300 win mag or 270?

Might suggest that you first give the barrel a thorough clean.Like with lead /copper removing foam and bristle brush it so the lands and groves show up properly.Even get a gunsmith to do it if you haven't the proper kit, and then retry some grouping.Alot of accuracy problems in older guns can be traced to this.

Thanks for the in depth response. its a 7mm mag that has been well looked after so copper/carbon fouling isn't an issue.

its still shooting fine at the moment but has a fair amount of rounds through the barrel. approx. 100 rounds per year for the last 11 or 12 years

Maybe your right, With the tikka t3 and the likes such good price, re barreling may not be worth the hassle.

i might just shoot away until accuracy does eventually drop off.

Not that a massive round count PA TBH, and it isn't a barrel eater either. Don't mind me asking? What make is it and how old?

It’s a tikka t3. Great gun to be fair.

bought it in 2010 or 2011 so about 12 years old

Well, good news. It doesn't look like it's too hard a job on a Tikka T3.In the realm of DIY. Just need the correct wrench and some go/no-go gauges and a replacement barrel. Sweet rifle too BTW,be tempted to one myself if it is available in LH.

If you are referring to a replacement barrel, so long as it is the same caliber you just need an import permit, which can be done by individuals here:

Or you can get a dealer to bring it in on your behalf.

No change in licence or anything else required for spare barrels in the same caliber as your licence.

Shouldnt be a biggie.You have the liscense.Contact Tikka ,see what their export requirements are,(is Finland in the EU?) Get one with your serial number put on it by the factory.Contact the DOJ for an import cert for the barrel,takes about a week and they do it for free.Send to Tikka with the funds,wait about 10 days for courier delivery.Instal yourself with correct tools or take to gunsmith who has tools and knowledge.Enjoy new accurate gun.

One other Cavet.A gunsmith who saw this post told me to add that if you are going to DIY this.DO have the correct tools to do this job,and go work out in the gym awhile first! Tikka apparently uses some ridiculous foot poundage of torque in the factory to seat the barrels.

Any concerns around 'Proof' of a rifle with a replacement barrel? Is is something that need to be considered?? I know we don't have a proof house in Ireland but assume rifles are subjected to the same proof regulations as a shotgun.

I’m not a qualified smith but from general reading on the subject (and I may be wrong), a firearm has to be re-proofed if metal-work has been undertaken/altered which would affect the safety of the said firearm.

In this instant, you’re not altering anything metal wise, you’re just replacing a barrel which will have been proofed/approved before released for sale.

Your firearm is sound, new barrel is sound, and you’re just putting both together so proof should not be an issue.

Your biggest issue will be head-spacing, should NOT be an issue if replacement barrel is from same manufacture/third party manufacture and made specifically to fit your action.

More experienced members will no doubt chip in here.
