By giving a press release and then leaking information to the press, they have seriously defamed a couple, especially if their DNA doesn't match.

Gardai yet again showing abject stupidity and incompetence

As I said, I’m from the area and all my life, this has been discussed but nobody has ever had a clue who it could be. Once it’s out, it I’m sure that it will be well discussed.

For those saying it was a different time… it was, but there were single mothers living totally normal lives with the support of their families in the area. I went to school with their kids.

This murder was particularly savage and shocking. This isn’t the result of someone even remotely normal having a baby out of wedlock. The violence and hatred is unreal, as is the subsequent vandalism of the grave. The fact that this pair got married after… to be honest, the fact that they dumped the baby into the sea suggests that they couldn’t bury it, so if the murderer was from a farm, they didn’t have the support of their family (In hiding the body).

The place was awash with Gardaí through the years. I meet people who had lived in the area for a while because their father’s were stationed there with surprising regularity. This won’t narrow it down much if it’s true.

It looks like the couple had slipped through the net from this report. Possibly moved out of the area and were not followed up on.

Are they denying Baby John is her/their child, rather than denying murdering him?

The parents haven't even admitted they are the parents. The whole spin now is leave then alone. But there are so many questions.

I lived through the 80s and the people from my town, the poorest of the poor were the ones who tried their best to look after their kids and not give them up , away. They were already looked down on for living in poverty so felt like they had nothing else to be shamed about. They were single parent's who kept their kids.

It was the working business people, professionals, gardai kids who hid pregnancies or were shamed into doing so by their families.

You live 90km away, how do you know that Cahirsiveen people are very sad and upset caused by keyboard warriors?

Have they asked you, somebody 90 kilometres away, to go into bat on the internet for them?

Maybe they are sad and upset that one of their own was stabbed ~28 times, had its neck broken then tossed in the sea.

I read there in one article on this case that Johns headstone has been vandalised a number of times over the years.

He experienced the worst of human nature during his short life and they couldn't even leave him alone in his final resting place.

Yet all that is bothering some here is that a few people might be feeling uncomfortable with the spotlight being on them and the cover up that has gone on for nearly 40 years.

They didn't give DNA. 400 locals gave DNA and this must have given them a connection to the family. I know from cases in the U.S the police genealogy specialists have access to public DNA record sites but this isn't th case in Ireland.

I believe once the DNA pointed to a certain direction DNA was taken from the rubbish bin. And this is the stage the gardai are at. They have not taken DNA directly from the couple.

That's why we have courthouses, judges, jury's and appeal courts.

It's common practice for Gardai to say they have made arrests in relation to incidents.

Here's one from just the other night in Mullingar.

A garda was assaulted and a man arrested during a protest at on Friday night as asylum seekers were brought by bus to Westmeath.

I referred to him/her/they stating people from Kerry, i.e. Cahersiveen, all hurting.

Can they put a number on this sweeping statement?
