Making a press release about it is not the right way to go about it no matter what the issue.

And then leaking that they believe these are the parents too - BEFORE getting DNA tests.

    You cannot trust the gardai

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,995 ✭✭✭Xander10

It what way have people from Kerry been damaged by speculation?

I don't see the similarity to the Bulley case.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,297 ✭✭✭walterking

Where does the poster say it's the "people of Kerry"?

By giving a press release and then leaking information to the press, they have seriously defamed a couple, especially if their DNA doesn't match.

Gardai yet again showing abject stupidity and incompetence

  • Registered Users Posts: 618 ✭✭✭mykrodot

speculation, speculation, speculation..............(look how that went in the Nicola Bulley case, she was not in farm buildings, she was not abducted , not killed by her partner. As the police said she was in the river all the time)

I didn't say the "people of Kerry have been damaged". If you read by post I said local people are very upset and hurt (no mention of damage) ............ not the entire population of Kerry either, I am speaking specifically about Cahirsiveen.

As I said, I’m from the area and all my life, this has been discussed but nobody has ever had a clue who it could be. Once it’s out, it I’m sure that it will be well discussed.

For those saying it was a different time… it was, but there were single mothers living totally normal lives with the support of their families in the area. I went to school with their kids.

This murder was particularly savage and shocking. This isn’t the result of someone even remotely normal having a baby out of wedlock. The violence and hatred is unreal, as is the subsequent vandalism of the grave. The fact that this pair got married after… to be honest, the fact that they dumped the baby into the sea suggests that they couldn’t bury it, so if the murderer was from a farm, they didn’t have the support of their family (In hiding the body).

The place was awash with Gardaí through the years. I meet people who had lived in the area for a while because their father’s were stationed there with surprising regularity. This won’t narrow it down much if it’s true.

    "......as the police said".

    Ironic for this topic.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,741 ✭✭✭chooseusername

It looks like the couple had slipped through the net from this report. Possibly moved out of the area and were not followed up on.

Are they denying Baby John is her/their child, rather than denying murdering him?

    From The Times;

"Solicitor Padraig O’Connell, who is representing the man and woman, said his clients were never questioned during the extensive Garda investigation into the case.

He said they had never encountered gardaí who were making door-to-door enquiries in south Kerry."...............

"Mr O’Connell indicated they had not been approached previously or been the subject of any visit from gardaí."

“The first they ever heard about this was a knock on the door.”

Look at the armchair detective here.

Did it ever occur to you that maybe the Gardai have information and evidence that they have not made public?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,566 ✭✭✭baldbear

I have a feeling the person who will be pointed to as the person responsible for taking the baby is dead. And conveniently won't be able to answer any questions. The whole baby investigation will be dropped.

The parents haven't even admitted they are the parents. The whole spin now is leave then alone. But there are so many questions.

I lived through the 80s and the people from my town, the poorest of the poor were the ones who tried their best to look after their kids and not give them up , away. They were already looked down on for living in poverty so felt like they had nothing else to be shamed about. They were single parent's who kept their kids.

It was the working business people, professionals, gardai kids who hid pregnancies or were shamed into doing so by their families.

If it transpires that the 2 arrested are the parents of the baby, then questions will need to be asked about her father's role in the original investigation and if he used his position to deflect the course of the investigation

Reports in paper are saying he died several years before 1984

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,297 ✭✭✭walterking

    Makes no difference whatsoever.

Gardai cannot act as judge, jury and executioner.

Leaking information to "mates" in the press shows a total disregard to justice.

You live 90km away, how do you know that Cahirsiveen people are very sad and upset caused by keyboard warriors?

Have they asked you, somebody 90 kilometres away, to go into bat on the internet for them?

Maybe they are sad and upset that one of their own was stabbed ~28 times, had its neck broken then tossed in the sea.

Two people being arrested out of the blue in south or mid Kerry is not going to stay quiet for long.

Who said it was the Gardai that initially pointed the media to the news of the arrests ?

Would you prefer if people were just arrested in secret?

And was it the Gardai who actually said that the arrested people were the parents, or is that just speculation?

I read there in one article on this case that Johns headstone has been vandalised a number of times over the years.

He experienced the worst of human nature during his short life and they couldn't even leave him alone in his final resting place.

Yet all that is bothering some here is that a few people might be feeling uncomfortable with the spotlight being on them and the cover up that has gone on for nearly 40 years.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

Some lads on here are acting a bit wierd. The couple's solicitor is out in the media making statements but it's all the bold gardai and keyboard warriors fault that it's in the media.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,566 ✭✭✭baldbear

They didn't give DNA. 400 locals gave DNA and this must have given them a connection to the family. I know from cases in the U.S the police genealogy specialists have access to public DNA record sites but this isn't th case in Ireland.

I believe once the DNA pointed to a certain direction DNA was taken from the rubbish bin. And this is the stage the gardai are at. They have not taken DNA directly from the couple.

Seemed a bit presumptuous on the gravestone

    ' I forgive'

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

That's why we have courthouses, judges, jury's and appeal courts.

It's common practice for Gardai to say they have made arrests in relation to incidents.

Here's one from just the other night in Mullingar.

A garda was assaulted and a man arrested during a protest at on Friday night as asylum seekers were brought by bus to Westmeath.

    Why misquote me?

I didn't say the "people of Kerry"

I referred to him/her/they stating people from Kerry, i.e. Cahersiveen, all hurting.

Can they put a number on this sweeping statement?

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,232 ✭✭✭waterwelly

And how would a lad 90km away know anything about how the people in the area are feeling?

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,438 ✭✭✭NSAman

Well this lad is 6000kms away and knows how “the people of the area” are feeling….

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,676 ✭✭✭✭Beechwoodspark

Rang a friend in the locality this morning, the locals all know well who this couple are. They are from a very “respectable” background etc.

Apparently they are denying all and telling the locals there has been a huge mistake made. The solicitor saying similar.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,829 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

Gerry O'Carroll calling for a public investigation of it all.

A Guard I knew from Listowel said Gerry was the lowest man he ever met.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,995 ✭✭✭Xander10

IF the Gardai are barking up the wrong tree again, it will be a disaster.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,829 ✭✭✭✭Danzy

Yet it was the norm at the time, still births were not registered.

As unbaptised they would not be buried in a cemetery.

Your lack of knowledge is causing you confusion.

You would imagine they would be acutely aware that there cannot be more mistakes with this case and every move they make must be painstakingly planned and thought out.

There are plenty of stories of concealed pregnancies up and down the country, just take a look at the letters written to Gay Byrne.

It just so happens that The Kerry Babies and Ann Lovett case made it into the public domain.

Which would lead me to believe they made absolutely sure of this one before moving on it.
