If you put an opinion piece on social media then you should be prepared to defend that piece at any time. It's very apparent that Kellie Harrington hadn't the intellect to do that and humiliated herself with her glib bob and weave responses.

I don't, and I know well the history of girl's boxing in Ireland, just the claim that boxing is somehow more diverse than say football is a bit misguided, especially when there's still clubs that don't allow intergender sparring.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,612 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

inter-gender sparring? What are you on about? Which clubs would these be now? I've never seen one that never let a girl move around with a male boxer - albeit he'd normally not be trying too hard! It would be done only for her benefit. Is that what you are complaining about - that the boy wouldn't be told to batter her?

Sure look at the misogynistic Leinster male rugby team - they have never put a female into their starting 15! What a complete shower of man-bastards

Are girls allowed to play on the boys U18 team in your diverse football?

Oh am I? Why could she not handle the question so?

All you haters, stick this in your pipe and smoke it.

There is some glaring irony here - Can we assume that "The Orb" isn't your real name?

Imagine a journalist going after Kellie Harrington, with the country full of dodgy individuals who deserve a light shone on them. How low can a journalist go?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,422 ✭✭✭Snooker Loopy

    Kellie Harrington isn't a victim.

She put out a racist tweet and can't stand over it.

Id be able to defend a view I have OR say that is not my view. Fairly simplistic stuff. She was in no way ambushed , do you know what the interview was in relation to? Because it wasn't just boxing , how did she remember straight away the tweet was from October? She handled it hilariously bad. She ain't the right ambassador for that campaign anyway , that's clear as day. Out of interest did you even listen to her interview?

It's almost as if an apology isn't good enough and the media are only out to destroy people. Kellie is a national hero and this is how she's treated, she's been essentially been cancelled overnight, a total cast out now.

You should never ever apologize to the woke media. Not because you may be wrong, but because it does absolutely nothing. They smell blood and now they're in for the kill.

And who's the scumbag here? Let's not forget this is the same newstalk that told you to not go visit your grandparents when they were dying, told you to not attend their funerals, told you to stay indoors for two years and who are now saying that these measures were excessive. They wore you down over two years to be afraid of everything, they made money off it, and now you want to go along and cancel a national hero because they said so.

    Don't fall for it.

Em, hatred is the problem here. Generalised vilification which brands an "out group" as criminals is hate speech. It's literally what the Nazis did.

she's been essentially been cancelled overnight,

I can't wait till she goes on the late late to tell us how she's been cancelled.

If you write a few innocuous lines on Twitter and then delete it again almost immediately, be prepared for some jumped up little prick to ambush you 6 months later trying to generate the outrage clicks. Do not be surprised at the useless mob that will lap it all up and start baying for your blood.

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,694 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Cancel culture woke snowflake mob are out in full force here. Run for cover, Kellie.

  • Registered Users Posts: 632 ✭✭✭squidgainz

Thats not what happened though. She was given the chance to set the record straight on a "few innocuous lines" she however chose not to. In a spectacularly funny way.

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,842 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

She explained why, she wasn't prepared and didn't want to get in to it. She was there as a sportsperson.

Yet the shock jock inquisitor persisted.

You are entitled to put your own legal name on here squidgainz if you want. Given that you believe that:

If you put an opinion piece on social media then you should be prepared to defend that piece at any time

You are putting your opinions down here. Would you not be happy to defend those at any time? How are you going to do that if your employer or friends or family or work colleagues or clients don't know it is actually you who is posting?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,422 ✭✭✭Snooker Loopy

Kellie Harrington herself isn't even the main issue here.

The main issue is the slithery propaganda techniques fascists use to seduce ordinary people like her into believing fascist bullshit. Packaging racist hatred as "common sense" through focussing on an individual crime by a member of a targeted out group and branding all members of that out group as criminals and legitimate targets of concerted hate campaigns. If they can't find something to their liking, make shlt up. Facts and context have no place in fascist propaganda. Just tar the entirety of the out group as rapists, murderers, paedophiles etc.

The real problematic actors are the likes of Gript, which is a thinly veiled fascist propaganda rag, slithery far right trojan horses like Colm Parkinson and Ewan MacKenna and the likes David Quinn and Eilis O'Hanlon who give right wing hate speech a fake "respectable" face.

Same as the Irish women's football team weren't the main issue when they chanted Up The Ra. The main issue was the Disneyfication of IRA murderers who slaughtered civilians and the increasing normalisation of the act of glorifying these murderers in Irish society. The football team were merely the canaries in the coalmine.

Journalists have a real scumbag trait about them. They feel the need to bring out the very worst in people to further their own careers. Hannon was out of line for pushing the issue. To be fair to him though who gives a toss what kellie Harrington has to say about anything. He probably felt he had to go down that route for entertainment value.

This was basically textbook how not to handle an interview. Those somehow claiming that Kellie is a victim are ignoring the fact that she put a comment in the public domain that was straying into the political sphere. Never mind that she deleted it, she was the one who put the tweet out there.

Shane Hannon was fully within his rights to take that specific line of questioning, it clearly showed how Harrington was the wrong fit for the campaign she was endorsing.

Her brand has been damaged by this interview, of that there is no doubt. Spar will probably quietly drop her, for she was so out of her depth it was embarrassing to watch. Her line "I wouldn't turn professional if you paid me" was one moment that stuck out like a sore thumb.

The PR advisor also had a nightmare and should not be placed in that situation again. They made a bad situation worse, and didn't have their client in any way prepped for the interview.

At the end of the day it was Harrington who chose to engage on Twitter with a political tweet in October. Nobody forced her to do it, and she is now learning that words and sentiments may have consequences.

It's a major blow to her image - the question is if she can come back from it...

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,585 ✭✭✭jackboy

You have a valid point but people jumping on the likes of Kellie and the Irish womens soccer team is low life behaviour.

  • Registered Users Posts: 632 ✭✭✭squidgainz

Hahahahahaha and your legal name is Donald trump is it? Pull the other one, she is a famous figure who tweeted something controversial and couldn't stand over it. A spectacular fail that interview. Why couldn't she not just clarify her position on immigration??? She was there as an ambassador for Spar for diversity into he community ffs.

  • Registered Users Posts: 68,842 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

All wars have been Disneyfied/Hollywoodised. Even our own Independence War, Civil War and revolutions.

Maybe the girls were just singing a good old come all ye song and thought better of it and apologised. Same as Kellie has done,

Hopefully the uber concerned shock jock will go after John McGurk etc. I think he played Junior B.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,612 ✭✭✭✭Donald Trump

I'm not the one coming out saying that someone should be willing to answer at any stage on something they say online.

If you believe what you are saying, then it is hypocritical for you to hide behind a pseudonym. If you don't believe it in reality then you aren't being hypocritical, but you are lying when you say you do believe it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,422 ✭✭✭Snooker Loopy

He asked her a simple question. She couldn't answer it. It was basic journalism. Since when is basic journalism a "scumbag" activity?

The far right hate journalism. They always have. But the far right love propaganda.

I don't agree with a lot of your post but we do have a media where if you dare to step out of line or say what they view as the wrong thing they will come after you and try to take everything from you.

Newstalk journalists frequently shy away from hard questions to political figures, or let them of with their communication clinic learned spiel. Or their hypocrisy of talking about the dangers of gambling on a programme sponsored by paddy "gamble responsibly see dunlewey.net" power. But no the cowards go after the athlete with the limited pr training.

If it was a few years ago and you needed a newstalk presenter to move on, a quick name drop of Denis O'Brien always did the trick.
