The presenters are monotone and speak slowly. Has the air of a wake.

What about an ex-politician or sports star? Might attract some guests? BOD or Enda kenny?

If Claire Byrne got the LLS her first programme would be as follows:

1 Corona Virus: If it returns what lessons have we learned? Our guests include Dr .....

2 Brexit: We talk to traders on the border. How does it affect their livelihoods?

3 This is the 25th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement, We relive those momentous days with these reporters who were on the inside.

4 Our standard of living is falling. We have a special guest to tell us what she did to survive these terrible times.

5 We talk to a doctor about Depression. How can we fight this terrible condition?

6 Social Media. How old should your child be when they get their first mobile. We talk to a clinical psychologist.

7 Gardening tips We'll have Dermot Gavin in to give us tips about what to do around the garden.

6 Finally Surviving Divorce. 'Mary' tells us her story.

I think Claire Byrne with Hollywood celebrities might be an issue, Tubridy was always a bit out of his depth and a bit over awed by them ,he didn't really know what to ask them .

Claire Byrne could be the opposite, in that being an RTE diva herself she might not show the Hollywood divas enough respect, she could go all current affairsy and start asking about politics etc etc

She doesn't come across as someone with a wide cultural knowledge or interests. She is like highly ambitious but when her work is finished in RTE she just goes home to her husband and children. She wouldn't have much knowledge of the dublin social scene she couldn't really engage in light hearted banter with visiting international guests. Sure Tubridy even ended up in copper face Jack's with guests after one show ,can't imagine Claire Byrne doing that

You got it in one actually. She certainly doesn’t have the depth of cultural knowledge to ask decent questions of celebs. Ordinarily I’d say so what if she’s out of touch. She’s a mum with kids and is keeping her career and family ticking along so it doesn’t leave much time for clubbing at the weekends or going to the trendy gigs around town. Even worse being based in Laois you’re on the small venue gig circuit all of us outside the bigger towns and cities are familiar with. However, if you have the interest and a band or actor is coming up in the show you’ll of course swat up on them and listen to their music and watch a few movies. This isn’t CB thought. She just hasn’t the interest to start with. She seems very conservative and unimaginative and actually from listening to her show in the morning for a good while, I can’t tell you the slightest bit about the woman outside of the interviews she does. anything cultural or fun she shoots down and says she can’t be getting involved with. I mean, besides current affairs, what’s she actually interested in? I don’t know. Anyone here have an idea?

I see George Hook has his say on it saying it should have been scrapped after Gay Byrne , also if Claire Byrne, Sarah McInerney are the favourites they are from the wrong backround current affairs.

Don't forget the usual suspects to talk to us about what to put in what bin, what supplements to take, and all we need to know about wills and probate.

She's the female Pat Kenny. Her milieu is current affairs and investigative journalism where she speaks with guests in a concise analytical kind of way. That's what she's good at, just like Pat is/was. The only reason to really give her the Late Late is because she is the 'next in line', so to speak, whereas in reality she's not a proper fit. Then again, if you're looking at someone who can effortlessly flit from serious to light conversation as Gay Byrne did in his day, I don't really think that type of broadcaster actually exists anymore.

Putting Claire Byrne and Pat Kenny in the same league is a crime against humanity. She was barely competent on Newstalk. Don't watch RTE,but I presume it's a list of agreed questions.

    @kneemos

Putting Claire Byrne and Pat Kenny in the same league is a crime against humanity.

It's not, though, obviously. At worst, it's an error. However one thinks of Byrne's exact skills v Kenny, that's still the kind of mould she's in, and as such is pretty wrong for a broad entertainment-based chat show like the LLS.

  • Registered Users Posts: 751 ✭✭✭techman1

But when gay Byrne started it , it was an entertainment show based on the American shows of the day, hence the name. Gay Byrne was an entertainer not a news guy, it sort of morphed organically towards current affairs and serious items as time went on due to the success and popularity of the show and gay Byrne ability to let it grow to where the audience was.

However now they are making a huge mistake by grounding it in current affairs stuff, it needs to go back to its roots in light entertainment and lose alot of the serious stuff again. It's a big risk for Claire Byrne if she takes it because if it flops that's the end of her media career. Look at grainne seoige, she was everywhere a decade ago and now her career is over

Looks like Kevin Bakhurst is coming back to take over from Dee Forbes (who beat him to the job last time). Not clear why DMcRedmond is out of the running but he was interviewed.

If the LLS slot is filled before the new DG is in situ, it will be a palace coup.

Didn't McRedmond spend most of his tenure at TV3 criticising RTE and moaning about the unfair advantage RTE had over TV3 due to RTE having the license fee plus advertising. I doubt their would be much gra for McRedmond in RTE.

On topic I can't believe Tubs has been at the helm for 14 years. Hook is correct that it's a poisoned chalice for whoever takes over. There's no-one that can recover the viewers that Tubs lost and the new host will have the ignominy of having "killed the Late Late".

This is why I think someone like Paddy Kielty would be a good host, or someone of that ilk. Someone who can inject a bit of personality, think on their feet etc. Add natural humour. Veer off script.

CB will turn it into one big borefest. If anything, I think she could actually make it into a more misery porn based show. She loves the negative topics. Look at the way she took am excellent radio show from Sean O Rourke, and with the help of her backroom team no doubt, turned it into muck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,446 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

All they seem to know how to do is misery. Turbridy,Joe,Darcy,Byrne,The Late Show. One of the many reasons I never consider turning it on.

There isn't a snowballs chance in hell the next presenter will be male. Absolutely none.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,446 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Doesn't matter. They're going to make a Badgers ballbag of it anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,487 ✭✭✭✭elperello

Do you think that's a good or bad thing ?

Personally I don't care if it's male or female as long as they give us a good show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,046 ✭✭✭✭Quazzie

Personally I couldn't care less who got it, buy I just hate that in the modern age it's 100% a woman getting it, irrespective of she's the right person for the job.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭hamburgham

She’s interested in nothing. She’s been massively over promoted and I’d say she has to do a hell of a lot of prep to be up to speed for the interviews. I think she went to the old college of commerce in Rathmines so no great intellect or any significant study behind her. She’s extremely presentable and will better never offend anyone, they’re her selling points.

Just consider she ended up with both of Pat Kenny’s slots, the Monday night show and the morning radio show. The idea that she is in any way comparable to Pat is laughable. Shows how current affairs coverage has deteriorated on RTE.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭hamburgham

Sorry, nothing could be farther from the truth. Pat is highly analytical, a masters degree in engineering I think where all Clare has is a Mickey Mouse qualification from the old college of Commerce in Rathmines. It’s like comparing the Dandy to classic literature.

The reason she is so straight all the time is because she’s struggling desperately to come across as intelligent. Anyone who IS intelligent can make cracks, show a lighter side as they know they are intelligent and aren’t bothered about keeping up a facade.

What is it with her? I just don't get it.

Are they going for the American style of pretty presenter regardless of talent.

Scrap it and re run The Sopranos instead.

I see CB dropped out of an Arts degree in UCD. She’d be the first to shout about women’s rights. I wonder if she’d be all over RTE if she wasn’t so pretty as it’s certainly not her brains which have got her there.
