McBrine has 4 wickets and White 1. Their spinners must be licking their lips :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,275 ✭✭✭Gillespy

    Michelle for McBrine. Well bowled.

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

They did pretty well in the end. Fully expected a score of 450+.

Th nightmare situation now is being left with 15-16 overs to bat and ending the day 3 or 4 down!

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Yep, needs to be a lot of concentration and lets hope the openers can bat through to close of play. Good old hill to climb with 3 days left. We'd want to be putting up about 450...........

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,478 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

We are behind 155 runs after the first innings... as I expected our first innings wasn't near good enough. 214 all out...

Only thing getting us out of this.. will be bad weather ...

We won't be of the ability to set a challenging target here would be my thinking..

Yep...Not 2 overs done and already 1 down..

    McCollum lbw.. first ball... ffs

    10/3 good night Irene

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Clueless again, rabbits in the headlights.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,478 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    14/4

Outrageously bad... looks like an innings defeat could be on the cards...

    Not winning from here.

    12 overs gone

    4 wickets down

    1.4 is the run rate

Not a single batsman in double figures

    .... vs Bangladesh

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,275 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Hate having to go looking up the lowest test innings scores whenever Ireland bat in their second innings.

3 overs went by in a row and not a single run scored.. 19/4.. after 14 :o

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Well the openers needed to stone wall through to close. Looks like we had the wrong openers though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,478 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    They certainly did that.

20.0 and 30.3 the strike rates.

either way, outside of a freak weather event, there is probably no saving this test.

of the 4 fixtures we just picked up the one victory, the consolation third T20 win.

No doubt we’ll be forced to listen to Balbernie talk up the positives of this tour….

” it was very successful “

” the experience will stand to the lads “

” we were very competitive “

” a bit better luck here and there and we might have…“

”wait, win, you wanted us to win ? “

That was the most predicable close to a day you'll ever see in test cricket.

In their defense CI threw them to the wolves. These batsmen haven't played first class cricket in 2 years. They have absolutely no clue of the format. They don't have defensive mindsets, they can't just dig in and block, they've never ever had to bat out a full days play. It doesn't help that the coach thinks he has a team of Stokes and Butlers that can blast their way out.

Ireland can't play spin for 10 years now and no effort seems to have been made to fix this issue.

It's not a T20. It's test match cricket, If 15 overs went by without a run tonight that wouldn't be an issue. Wickets matter not run rates!!

Whats this vs Bangladesh thing? Last week you said we should be dominating them! Bangladesh are a very good team these days. Shakib is the best all rounder in world cricket. Much better teams than Ireland struggle over here!

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,478 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

They are a reasonably good team…. But that doesn’t mean we fall on our arses like we are so far.

are they so good we should be facing the possibility / probability of an innings defeat by them ? Really ?

we certainly should be looking to dominate. The very question of it alludes to the issue of Irish cricket and just being delighted to be competing, delighted to be there, as opposed to demanding to be competitive and demanding performances, improvements and results. This isn’t good enough….scoring at 1.5 runs an over and 27 runs scored and 4 wickets lost in 17 overs. PJ Moor scraping into double figures, our only batsman to do so. He’s 10*

My worry tomorrow morning is a couple of early wickets and the house of cards comes down, 90 all out or something equally as embarrassing…

That many overs remaining there was no benefit in having a ‘just block’ mindset.

But the runs were immaterial when we went into bat with 16 overs to see out the day. We lost 4 wickets in 6 overs to spin before we arrived at a pair that could hold it together for 10 overs. If we had scored 0 and defended out the day, we'd be in a much better place. That's what openers in a test match are supposed to do when put in to bat at the close of day. Just stay there and the runs will come eventually. Harry Tector seems to be capable in this role at this level. As it is, likely the match will be over by breakfast time here tomorrow.

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

Now your lack of test match watching experience is showing!!

If we scored at 1.5 an over and made the close at 27/0 or 27/1 even, that would have been an excellent last hour for Ireland. They could have went at 4 an over and 67/4 wouldn't have us any better off!

There was nothing to gain from that session for Ireland and everything to lose. Unfortunately they lost.

The openers didn't know how to grind out time and now we're in a huge hole. Tector and Moor did what was needed and fought to stay not out

Well I've been watching tests since late 80s. So that debunks your hokey from the get go :)

If ireland go out there with a positive attitude and not an attitude that's only appropriate if say 6 overs are left... if they are positive and put the opposition on the back foot ... play positively and with initiative and good judgement... that score looks a lot different. :)

They'd gained if they'd only conceded one wicket and scored a respectable number of runs..

I think there's a time for everything in test cricket and we really needed our openers to close up shop today. Plenty of time to score runs tomorrow and the next day but you can only do that if you're at the crease. I think this pair will try and stay there tomorrow but once one goes, pretence is pointless.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,478 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

Closing up shop with that many overs left is a tactic fraught with danger though has been always, so naïve …. So it proved. Cricket has seen so many examples where a team endeavours to play an unnatural and unnecessary defensive tactic to come up short..

now Ireland are behind the 8 ball. The scoreboard can’t lie. They’ve given themselves next to no chance.

0.5% one win predictor with most bookies suggesting Ireland are around 60/1. Bangladesh 1/200

the Irish negative tactics influenced us getting to where Ireland are… play the game not the clock.

at the end of day 2, Ireland have lost 14 wickets.. there is NO defending that stat. Disgraceful.

That’s more like it this morning. Tector definitely has the temperament for this format. Wouldn’t look out of place in most test teams going to be honest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,275 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Innings defeat avoided and a little lead building now. Been a great day so far.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Yep, made the best of a botch job. Having got this far with patience and graft, now seem to be throwing the bat at it a deal more. Let's hope they're reading the situation right.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

I dunno - surely it's not negative in a test match on the second day of play to stonewall out to close of play. That would a big positive. Losing 4 wickets last night so quickly was abject. It might well be negative to bat very defensively at other times in a match but not in that situation I think.

You may be arguing that's against our normal style and hard to implement. Yes but isn't that down to coaching, preparation and leadership.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Successive partnerships of c40, c70 and c70 ongoing have got us a tiny toehold. Let's hope we can keep them going as long as possible.

  • Registered Users Posts: 437 ✭✭TipsyMcStagge

Much better so far this morning Tucker and Tector look like Test batters who understand this format showing real grit in the face of adversity. Fellas talking about dominating Bangladesh are insane these won't lost at home to many at all they spanked England in a T20 series before we got out there. They are miles clear of us.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,275 ✭✭✭Gillespy

These two get through the second new ball, Bangladesh will start to get nervy. It’s hot and the fast bowlers look wrecked. Hopefully Shakib doesn’t start bowling himself either. What’s that all about.
