I've a business and am a homeowner.

My domestic electricity and oil bill for the past 12 months were LOWER than the previous 12 months when the gov credits were added.

A few painless changes meant about 25% less use

In the business we heat a large building of 6,000 sq ft. Gas unit price jumped from 5.5c to 13c. Again, a combination of gov supports and some use changes meant the net cost was less than 5% ahead of last year

Staff implemented similar changes in their homes and all were able to reduce their energy use by over 20%

Only businesses that are poorly managed and don't keep an eye on their unit costs and usage have had "surprise" bills.

If the farmer doesn't have plant machinery, they can't farm the land and the electricity lines make no difference, if they do it all by hand, then the lines will also make 0 difference.

How many farmers are injured by pylon electricity lines vs. plant machinery?

No sterilised land, no block on farming the land, no measurable danger from the lines that impact on farming, just pearl clutching and hand wringing with 0 to back it up while wanting the tax payer to subsidise farmers further.

You're still misusing the word sterilised, everybody knows you thought it was some sort of electricity magic that you're trying to back away from.

People understand why farmers sometimes get compensation when their land is used and also when they don't and also what occurs when wayleaves exist on land that they own.

Their land being sterilised is not one of them.

They also understand that paying out unnecessarily to farmers for electricity infrastructure will increase either the price of electricity or increase taxes.

Anyway, you can take up your argument with a dictionary and see how you get on.

And what you say there is fine but you were much more emotive in earlier posts with talk of land being sterilised, health risks etc.

Quite a lot of posters' arguments seem to be based on begrudgery, "why should the rich farmers get even more money?" Some of the farmers around me would definitely not be rich and many of the farmers that would be asset-rich are actually cash-poor and have to put in very long hours to keep their farms viable. I'm not a farmer, but am from the countryside.

Legally, if the statute of limitations applies in this case, then the ESB would appear to have a tight case, but I'm not entirely comfortable that the state monopoly in the country I live in, would always apply "the letter of the law" to cases where it has discretion. I don't think anyone would deny that the landowners suffer some loss from having the pylons on their land. I think the loss is small, probably less than what farmers are currently being compensated with, but they should be compensated for the inconvenience of having to work around the pylons. I don't subscribe to the sterilisation argument. The land is still fit for the purpose it was being used for at the time the pylons were being erected.
