I think Drumpot is right. Dublin are living of reputation right now. Last Sunday was the first time I saw them in the flesh for almost a year now. And they looked the same as they did when they were getting hidings in the league last year. They don't seem to have any plan or drive. I know they beat Derry handy enough in the end, but both teams were poor in the second half. They are a far cry for the years where we (Mayo) would be heading to Croke Park in the hope that Dublin would finally have a bad day, but time after time their composure, athleticism and skills would win through. You could see from them that they refused to be beaten. That doesn't seem to be there any more. And won't just magically appear overnight whenever they want it for championship.

Yea that is a possible situation alright, here it is on paper

    Kerry

    Sligo

    Donegal

    Westmeath

    Game 1

Sligo v Westmeath - Westmeath win

Kerry v Donegal - Kerry win

    Game 2

Donegal v Sligo - Donegal win

Westmeath v Kerry - Kerry win

So going into the last set of games (Kerry v Sligo, Donegal v Westmeath) the table is as follows.

    Kerry 4

    Donegal 2

    Westmeath 2

    Sligo 0

If Sligo beat Kerry the best Sligo can do is end on 2 , but have already lost to Donegal and Westmeath so lose out on that tie breaker.

If Sligo beat Kerry, Kerry end up on 4 but have already beaten Donegal and Westmeath so Kerry win that tie breaker.

So regardless of the outcome of the Kerry Sligo game Kerry are top and Sligo are out.

    Dead rubber.

Yeah, Donegal and Westmeath are playing for a home preliminary quarter-final though, it should keep them honest enough but I doubt they would risk anyone carrying a knock.

In your scenario, if Sligo are seeded 4 and Tyrone are Seed 2 in place of Westmeath:

Kerry 4 points after beating Donegal and Sligo.

Tyrone 4 points after beating Sligo and Donegal.

    Donegal 0 points.

    Sligo 0 points.

Kerry and Tyrone play for quarter-final qualification. Donegal and Sligo is a shootout for the preliminary quarter-final spot.

Obviously the fear factor is gone but I still think they will be in the mix in the business end of the championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,306 ✭✭✭✭Drumpot

I think they will be in the mix aswell, I just don’t see how so many have them as favourites.

Even though it took a truly superb free to beat us against Kerry I don’t recall thinking we were robbed. If anything I thought we were lucky to be even in the mix till the end. One could argue Kerry getting that monkey off its back was as big as the result because it well and truly ended Dublins invincible aura.

Don’t hear too many “break Dublin in two” demands, that’s usually a sign we are back in the pack and maybe not as big a favourite as some have suggested 😂

Dublin lost to Kerry by a point last year and have Mannion, McCaffrey and Con ( and Cluxton) back this year so have to be favourites. No other team has added one player as good as any of those 3.

Dublin dont need to peak for another couple months so will build up as they go, they'll walk Leinster and then just need to start stepping up at group stage where they'll finish top 3 easily.

Others like Mayo and Derry need to hit the ground running to win Connacht or Ulster and then raise it again at the group stage which is a tougher ask imo.

Some pundits are suggesting the provincial championships should take place before the league. There is some merit in the suggestion. The 4 provincial winners could be guaranteed qualification, similar to the Tailteann winner from the previous year. Then have the league where everyone is clear on the league position for All-Ireland qualification. Then proceed with the All-Ireland series.

Dublin often played middling Mayo still couldn’t beat them tho

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,486 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

During the six in a row, Mayo drew with them, and lost the replay by a point. Lost another final by a point as well. In the draw Mayo had two own goals. Kerry also drew with Dublin in one of those years. Kick of a ball as they say in the six in a row never happening.

2015 to 2021 inclusive 7 years, only four counties competed in AI Finals. Dublin, Kerry, Mayo and Tyrone. Galway joined the party last year.

Home advantage is a big advantage in All-Ireland finals. Can you imagine if some of those replays were in Castlebar or Killarney instead. All-Irelands won without home advantage carry more weight in gold. A goal is 3 points. Are 3 All-Irelands won with home advantage the same as 1 All-Ireland won without home advantage?

Sam Maguire, not Tailteann Cup, is Keith Beirne's main target for Leitrim in 2023

“We want to be in the Sam Maguire, “We want to play at the top level, we want to get better and for us to get better we need a Connacht Final appearance, lads deserve that day out for all the work they’ve put in - Connacht Finals don’t come around too often.

“So to say we’d prefer to go to the Tailteann is just a silly excuse, we want to get into the Sam Maguire - we wanted to be seeded first or second and hopefully bring a crowd of ten or 12,000 in Carrick on Shannon in the All Ireland group stages and get a win.”

Dublin in the last two years were a kick of a ball from AI finals. Last year they were beaten in the semi final by a worldie free kick with the last kick of the ball, the year before they drew a semi final due to a retaken free, which they lost in extra time.

While they have certainly returned to rest of the pack from their dominant heights, their demise has been greatly exaggerated (esp among Dublin fans themselves)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,870 ✭✭✭CrabRevolution

I think their success in the last decade has made the Dublin fans adopt the classic Kerry "yerra-ism" playing themselves down. They lost 1 game of 7 by a point with the last kick of the game in Derry's home ground before beating them by 8 points in the final, yet they apparently "barely" got out of Division 2 and are worried ahead of the championship.

There's a particular Dublin poster who I'm convinced must be a very dedicated spoof with the stuff they post that's insulting to people's intelligence. Dublin may have lost one Leinster game in nearly 20 years now but before they play Wexford/Carlow/Wicklow in a Leinster first round they'll be posting "seriously worried about this game, I honestly can't see us getting out with a win unless we're at our best".

I only wish my county's chances were as bad as Dublins. We'd kill for their players and form.

Not a big believer in the margin proving how close team A is to team B. I take a slightly different view of it. I think the one point win might as well be a drubbing because who actually comes out on top is significant. Dublin almost never lost a close game in their pomp. It wasn't luck that they won a bunch of games by a point and it wasn't just the kick of a ball. They outfought everyone when it mattered and their will to win was strongest. That's turned it on it's head now. They keep running into teams who just take it away from them when it matters. Mayo stared them down in a tight game in 2021, Kerry did the same in 2022 and, most recently, Derry did the same thing in the league proper a few weeks ago. Admittedly it was a league game but Dublin were **** about trying to hold onto a draw while Derry went for it. It was striking because it was so un-Dublinlike.

I don't know. I'd like to think that... whatever it is, is still there but the evidence (watching the majority of their games) would convince you otherwise.

In case anyone is interested the first game of the championship is about to throw in.

Armagh v Antrim, Ulster preliminary round.

    BBC NI 5pm.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,080 ✭✭✭blowitupref

FT Armagh 0-20 Antrim 1-8. Very routine win for the home side, I don't think their next opposition Cavan will know anymore than they didn't already after watching that match.

Earlier today. FT London 0-12 Sligo 2-20. Pat Spillane junior named man of the match with 1-4. Sligo now play Leitrim or New York in the Connacht semi final, that match is on at 11pm Irish time tonight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,518 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

What happened to the TV coverage of Armagh v Antrim? Seems like something weird occurred as it wasn't on BBCNI on VM (station 109) despite the EPG stating it was on.

It wasn't for everyone, that's the point of my post. When I clicked onto VM 109 (which is BBC2NI) it said 'GAA live' on the programme description, but the only sport was the soccer match taking place during the HM Slade prison escape (Porridge film).

It's not a big deal or anything, but would like to know what happened.

Still feels so odd having the Championship this early

  • Registered Users Posts: 589 ✭✭✭vid36

Level in the Big Apple. What happens if New York get to the Connacht final?

  • Registered Users Posts: 823 ✭✭✭MattressRick

I'd say the GAA have no more an idea than you. Tend to figure these things out after they happen.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,080 ✭✭✭blowitupref

New York leading 0-7 to 0-6 at half time. Andy Moran's Leitrim team last score was in the 20th minute of the match and have have only scored twice from play.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,725 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

They are in the tailteann Cup this year so they will be getting a few trips over already I suppose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

Looks like Golderickand his officials aren't gonna let that happen. Benefit going to the away side in any tight calls, including what looked like a point near the end.

There will be no awkward moments on the plane home it seems.

NY have grown into it, theor handling has actually been good, and they are winning many of the 50/50 contests. If they can stick the pace, this could get interesting.

Great game. Leitrim just couldn't convert enough, they've been very wasteful. Seems to be a great atmosphere there as always.

The excitement is too much, have New York ever won a championship game?
