    (Previous outing link: https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058285717/boards-golf-society-2023-round-2-rosslare-25th-mar-12-30pm/p1 )

Welcome to the third round at Arklow Golf Club.

Arklow will complete the opening set of three historic links courses for the links swing part of this season before we head inland for the summer series.

Arklow Golf Club is celebrating their centenary year in 2027. The first three courses of the year were founded a combined total of 331 years ago [staggeringly over 5.5 break80's 😛])

As predicted the wind was very much a deciding factor for Rosslare -Perhaps thrown a bit by the 4 club challenge on his home course, blue note got it together and scored very well early on, and after the turn did just enough to keep it together to hold on to the lead for the return stretch into the wind back to the clubhouse.

Take note of the date as there's a shorter lead-in period for this round. Pricing is €50. I expect the booking system to open on clubnet shortly, and will update when it has. Again this one is a new course to me and if anyone has a course guide or tips please feel free to share.

Another course I really like, I try to play it a couple of times per year as it is relatively close to me. I think it is quite straightforward, and even if I know it I never manage to do any score on it.

I might be able to play it as I wasn't selected for the Pierce Purcell match on that day.

Thanks again for the course selection captain

I don’t know if I’m set up or what not, but I’d love to make it to arklow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Do you have the clubnet app installed Poppy? Thought you played in Portmarnock with us the first year we used it, but I could be mixing up the years.

If not, drop a PM to SeveOB and he should be able to re-activate you

You have an account, all you need to do is pay the subs for 2023, top up your purse and you can book. Send me a pm if you get stuck

Will definitely try to get to this, as it may be the last one for a few months. Think i'll miss May and June anyway, hopefully back for July, so really need to get down for this one.

enjoy it lads, Arklow is a nice track. Kind of a hybrid links but very enjoyable from my recollection

sorry to be missing this one, but I'll be watching closely

Stuck myself down on first tee time. Will need to get back early so unfortunately will miss post match post mortems😂

That’s a pity as Arklow has to be one of the most friendliest clubs you will ever visit and the food is lovely there.

have played it twice now and looking forward to going down again.

    Oh I will get food alright..never fear😂

Wont be around for this one - a long story - but walking a hill. Big college get together.

I love this course - it wouldn't be very different to Rosslare - but I do think Arklow is actually harder - as there are far more hazards , and you actually need a bit of course strategy for a few holes that have , drains and carry and water and even OB.

It isn't fully a Links - and about 5 of the holes on the west side towards end of the round - are more in a Rock face. There is a great mix of holes and lengths. Again - it is not a course that is overly rewarding of length.

The Jug last year was to be held here - but was washed out.

Enjoy -catch all in "Round 4" - this "round" thing seems to have stuck.

Whilst I probably had enough of it in Wexford - this one, would be a great one for a town stay over.

Hoping I won't be too late to book a tee time on Tuesday. I have to top up my purse and book in.

Don't want to miss this one

It’s open now for booking I think

Looking forward to the round in Arklow. Got down there last year for the pre-Jug practise round only for the course to be washed away before the Jug match.

Loved the course though and looking forward to being back. As Fix said, there's a few holes that feel more parkland than links on the back 9. It's a nice mix though.

Got purse topped up and booked today Golfgraffix, many thanks. Great job on the course guide again.

I booked in earlier in the week but I'm after getting a call up to play for the club in the Pierce Purcell, well on the panel anyway. I'm hoping the match won't be on Saturday but there is a small chance it will be. I'll hopefully know more during the week but still planning on playing Saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,635 ✭✭✭token56

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'm going to be able to make this one anymore. Apologies but I will see you at the next!

Looking forward to getting back to boards next weekend , played my first counting comp of 2023 yesterday and while my score didn’t reflect how I felt I played it’s good to start chipping away at the handicap again for another season!! ( it went the wrong way after yesterday …….) played Dundrum ….greens were very fast but anything off fairway was touch and go for mud balls so a tough enough day to start with.

This 1 is a long spin for the Southerners but well worth it by the sounds of it.

    PP

Will be my first round of golf since the disaster (for me) that was Rosslare, so this should be interesting 🤣

You should have seen me play Athlone yesterday!!! Disaster!!!

Not sure how much more will jump on this so I’ll tighten up the sheet towards the end of the week. In the meantime if you guys who are out a bit later want to move yourselves up the sheet work away please to save me the hassle 😜

How's the course at the moment? Looks really nice from some of the video's i've seen.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭RoadRunner

Hi All. A late update from Arklow is that course works being carried out on holes 16 and 17 has not fully bedded in as was expected. The course will be reduced to 16 holes. So from the 15th green make your way to a temporary teebox on the 18th hole (I've marked this with a yellow arrow above).

Accordingly the round greenfee has been reduced. Anyone who booked will receive a €15 refund to their account. Also for anyone not yet booked, the booking fee is now reduced to €35 total.

The forecast currently is for a calm day if not slightly overcast. Historically I've tended not be able to keep a good score going for the full 18, so this update can hopefully play into my hands allowing me to break the dreaded captain's curse once and for all 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 860 ✭✭✭bobster453

Good.Going by the video those 2 holes were the toughest.

Will we be playing 8/9ths of hc or leave it at full hc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,979 ✭✭✭RoadRunner

8/9ths handicap. We have our resident HC guy on the case.

Apols for this late stage problem. I know I'll still see everyone in good form on the day (obviously excepting whichever of tiger or benny losses their side hustle)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,118 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

Yes I’ll do handicap based on 8/9ths

    edit

so I assume it will be the full card you will be using as opposed to a 16 hole card with indexes 1-16

im not sure what index 16 and 17 are

you will need to reindex the holes we are actually playing to 1-16 if readjusting the handicaps.

it makes sense to readjust though rather than leaving them alone.

eg someone off 2 and if 16 and 17 are index 1 and 2, they would get no shots without readjusting. Equally someone off 18 should only have 1 shot per hole but if index 1&2 were holes 14&15 they would get 2 shots on these holes without readjusting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,118 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

Just got card so see attached for updated indexes to play off

That's a shame, arguably the two best holes out of action

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,122 ✭✭✭✭Jimmy Bottlehead

Quoted by many a man in the past.

Looking forward to this, although as a newb, I'm expecting my score to near double some of the better ones on the day :D

Stableford points double would be a lot.

    I trust you mean strokes.

Be very worried if you dont😂

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,122 ✭✭✭✭Jimmy Bottlehead

Yep, sorry, strokes. I've yet to really figure out stableford! (but I'm only looking to get my handicap over the coming couple of weeks).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 860 ✭✭✭bobster453

    Ah gotcha.Welcome aboard.

Stableford basically 2 points a hole regardless of your handicap gives you 36 points which is playing to your handicap.

So 18 handicap gets a shot on each of the 18 holes.Par 3 becomes par 4..par 4 becomes par 5 etc.

So basically 18 bogies for 18 handicap at 2 points a bogey gives you 36 points.

A par adds a point and a double bogey subtracts a point on a hole..so par becomes 3 points and double bogey becomes 1 point.

Your playing handicap determines where you have no shot or an extra shot on a hole based on the index of the hole.

So 17 playing handicap has no shot on index 18 and a par is then only worth 2 points.

Whereas a 19 playing handicap gives you an extra shot on the index 1 as there are only 18 holes.A par then becomes worth 4 points.

I am sure your playing partners will be happy to help you out on the day.

I have probably wrecked your head but hey..I wreck everyones head.😂

Hi Lads, Arklow member here. I'm down to play the weekly competition that Saturday morning. Had seen the society was down to play the course when I was on the Tee sheet earlier.

I was going to notify you of the 16th and 17th, a bit of a planning disaster from the committee to be honest.

Anyway, the course as always is in great nick. Enjoy.

Regarding the score cards, they have created new 15 hole competetion score cards. Ask Pa about them. It helps with the handicaps. The course will be set up for the D Course. I'll probably see some of you in the clubhouse before you tee off. I'm out about 8.10 or so.

Thanks Lefty. Hope you do come over and say hi and divulge any course tips.

Ha, Just keep it straight. The course is not very forgiving when you go left or right.

The greens are also in great shape.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,118 ✭✭✭✭Seve OB

But are we not playing 16 holes so would be no good really, unless you meant 16 and not 15?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

Morning folks. Turns out the missus needs the car this Saturday. Will anyone be coming via the N7, and if so could they take a quick pitstop at citywest and pick me up en route?

They have the 18th hole changed from a Par 5 to a very short Par 4 (I nearly drove the other day). Assuming the same will be applicable to you guys.
