    Fan favourite Rey Palpatine.

TBH I liked Rey in the first 2, everything just went utterly off the rails in the last one. It's a product of not sticking to your guns and placating a very vocal part of the audience.

I'm willing to give this a chance, but I'm not sure on the director. Seems like another Eternals disaster waiting to happen.

That's fair. The backtracking on her origins from Episodes VIII to IX was one of the more egregious, craven examples of bowing to irrational fan pressure. I loved the twist that she basically had no noble origin - more than that, she seemed to be cast aside - and her growth came from making her own history.

Fair enough if people didn't like Rey being "nobody", but the course correction went beyond extreme - into exactly one of the problems Star Wars has now - that the galaxy has about 20 people living in it.

I'm wondering if this is due to the successes of the star wars shows on disney+, I was pleasantly surprised by most of them and shows that there is a bit of interest in the lore behind the series but if I'm being honest, I think star wars just works with a TV format, trying to squeeze enough story into a single movie, designed to be part of a trilogy just feels so done and dusted with star wars.

I will say though, I did quite like Daisy Ridley, but I think having another Jedi protagonist is just going to make this feel too familiar, I'd argue this is why rogue one was so well received

Which part? That there's a new movie, or that it's set 15 years after the sequels?

TBH, it was always a matter of when Star Wars returns to the big-screens, not if.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,481 ✭✭✭RedXIV

Should have specified, I meant that there was another movie.

I believe, like you, that it was always a matter of when, but I'm not yet massively convinced on the potential success

Mostly documentaries and animations, a few TV episodes set in Marvel universe... I don't see any feature length movies on the scale \ challenge of a Star Wars blockbuster, or maybe on any scale?

Seems a gamble to entrust a film with hundreds of millions of dollars on the line to someone with so little experience.

Worked out fine for the MCU, depending on your perspective.

Fresh, enthusiastic young directors with minimal useful experience - especially those from backgrounds the studio wish to pay lip service to - are perfect for Marvel, Disney's purposes. Means FX and set-pieces can be front-loaded without seasoned, opinionated directors holding things up with silly ideas like "good filmmaking" or whatnot

They seem to be hired more as 'Directors of Photography' than actual Directors... or a football 'coach' with a Director of Football really running the show - but still titled 'Manager'.

TBH I’d like to see Ridley get more substantial material than the rubbish in ROTS. She deserves better than that - whether this delivers that will be a question we can only answer when / if the film gets released.

But then I said the same thing re: Ewan McGregor, and the monkey paw curled and we got Obi-Wan Kenobi, a show so bad it almost makes the prequels look good. Almost.

A Dave Filoni-verse Star Wars film though… no thanks to that!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

I hadn't watched any of cartoons Filoni was involved with, but had understood him to have a positive reception form fans... but his work so far in live action has stunk up the joint so badly, I'm worried about what Star Wars will amount to in the coming years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,765 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Rey being "nobody" was a brilliant twist and Rey and Kylo worked really well together even when everything around was meh.

Retuning the Jedi to being a royal bloodline in The last movie was absolutely stupid.

I don't understand why these clowns explode when their fan theories don't come through. Should you not welcome the surprise.

If you want to get hyper critical and myopic, Star Wars has a weird fixation with monarchies, regents, magistrates and anything except democracy. While Mando season 3 seems intent on making the one democratic institution there is - the New Republic - as shady and amoral as the Empire in its margins. Not even in a "that's the price of horse trading a new world order" sorta way either.

    3 new films were announced

The three new films will be set across the Star Wars timeline, with James Mangold covering a period 25,000 years before the events of the saga, Dave Filoni covering the New Republic vs. the Imperial Remnants in a story between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. Most exciting, perhaps was the news that Daisy Ridley will be reprising her role as Rey in a new film set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker

James Mangold will be directing a new SW movie too. Sounds like a Jedi origins movie but being set 25,000 before the first trilogy, we can at least hope there'll be no Skywalkers, right? Right??!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,765 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

Mangold sounds like the best one.

I assume Filoni's movie will star one of the many Jedi who survived Order 66. Fek sake way more than enough survived it seems to take on the 2 Sith. No idea why they were waiting on Luke.

I already know the plot of this new film. Darth Vader will live alone on Skellig Michael, he will have to build a kayak and catch fish, and he will also catch and eat wild gulls and puffins. Rest of the time he will spend meditating, doing yoga, practicing karate including stick fighting, w@nking and sleeping. He will sleep late most days. This will occupy the first 2hrs and 30mins of the film. Then in the final 15mins he will kayak to the irish mainland, get a Ryanair flight from Kerry airport to the Death Star, and fire off a nuclear missile that will blow up the entire universe, hence killing all good and bad guys including himself. This will be the very last Star Wars movie and will sweep up all awards at the Oscars, similar to what happened with the final LOTR film.

The Daisy Ridley announcement is a bit surprising. Besides her being a weak enough actor who was unable to capitalise on her star wars success, I thought they'd want to move on from that sorry mess of a trilogy.

Nobody really directs Marvel/SW movies and TV shows. They are all made in house which is why you can't tell one from the other direction wise.

The Last Jedi was the only one that stood out visually and was about the only aspect of that film that was any good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,018 ✭✭✭Theboinkmaster

How is Kathleen Kennedy still in charge of Star Wars?!?!?! Disney just love to lose money….

all the films have been utter shite other than rogue one and even that one she basically fired the director at the end. All the tv shows have been utter muck except Andor.

star wars with her at the helm has been an absolute shambles and none of these new projects sound interesting at all.

for the Rey trilogy she’s already fired one set of writers….

Star Wars needs a clean break from the 'Skywalker Saga' (i.e. everything Lucas created). Mangold's movie has the most potential for that reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,854 ✭✭✭✭silverharp

Disney have kind of missed their window with Star Wars for the cinema? the first of the new Star Wars films came out right when kids from the 70's had kids of a similar age this time round to enjoy the experience again. Im not sure you can reignite that? I dont get the impression teens or kids are into Star Wars anymore, and with D+ pumping out mediocre at best tv series , where will a large cinema audience come from?

This. All this. As a non-Star Wars fan, I agree that holding to this time/era is a bad move. I just don't get the love of them. Rogue One was the best film, by far, and I think that's mostly because it was it's own little film set in the universe, and while tied to the main ones it really can be watched separate of them without losing anything.

I've an interest in the SW world, but the Skywalker stuff is terrible and brings the films down. There's massive scope for something amazing, and the prequel one sounds like it has the most potential.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭Relikk

Daisy Ridley did her best with the dross we got after The Force Awakens, but I can't admit to feeling remotely excited for any movie set after that trilogy.

It was great to see The Old Republic listed on the timeline of eras featured in upcoming productions. We all know the stories of KotOR 1 & 2, but I still think film adaptations of them, taking nothing away but also expanding on them logically, is a no-brainer.

The Rey film is going to bomb at the box office, go girl power on steroids.

The director is a Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy who Wikipedia descibe as " a Pakistani-Canadian journalist, filmmaker and activist known for her work in films that highlight the inequality for women"

    No thanks

    Trailer released:

Looks good in general. Kicks off strong with a cool looking Light Saber fight.

Definitely recognised the Irish Cartoon Saloon style. Also the Wallace and Gromit folks 🙂

I'm still a bit befuddled at how Aardman are doing a Star Wars, while at the same time a little disappointed they didn't commit to the art-style they've used throughout the studio's existence. Cowards!

From what little we know of it, it sounds like a bit of a course correction from Lucasfilm/Disney, with Rey being the person setting up a new Jedi order instead of Luke.

The ST for me was by far the worst of the trilogies, and as easy as it is to blame Abrahms/Johnston, but the lack of understanding of the franchise or patience in developing it at an executive level must take a large portion of the blame. They wanted a trilogy developed insanely quickly, didn’t want to use Lucas’ outline and entrusted each films writing and direction to different people - a sort of MCU approach, except these films should have been far more interconnected.

So this new one might have a chance if they take their time and focus on making one film, and maybe use some of Lucas and EU ideas as a basis for the plot.

Ridley was fine as Rey, Rey just wasn’t too interesting because she just was a Force user without any real development and her heritage ended up being butchered. A 15 year time jump hopefully means we can just take that she’s been training since we’ve seen her and is a Jedi Master now, and will give her something better to work with.

    🤣 A Rey movie.

Let's hope these new movie announcements go the same way as the Patty Jenkins one.

Why won't Disney just fucking learn?

the doubling down is fascinating , it must be weird working for Disney these days, they have some bubble going on

Thing is, Disney are not mugs, despite the Jackie Chan "Wot??" we might be feeling about the news.

You don't get to be the dominant force in Western Media by not knowing your market. So as much as we might sneer and boo the idea of Rey returning ... clearly there's something telling the bean counters it makes sense. You don't pick that character so glibly without market research insinuating potential success.

Disney aren't immune to failure - they came so close to closing their doors pre Little Mermaid it's kinda crazy - but it's rare enough they let go of the wheel that badly. And I'd be confident enough they learned lessons from the sequel trilogy.

I'm not interested in Rey starring in a movie, but maybe the kiddos and girls who did like her are excited. Easy to lose sight of demographics who watch these things too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,854 ✭✭✭✭silverharp

not read into the story, but wasnt the head of Marvel fired recently , and it seemed to be he wanted to control costs at Marvel, whereas the mantra by Iger or whoever was "Box Office" , so not sure if the bean counters are in control there. With the recent drying up of free money, there might be ripples that will force Disney's hand in the next year or 2

I'd be willing to put money on the largest demographic for Star Wars being 40 year old saddos trying to relive the magic of the cinematic wonder they saw as kids. And sure, Disney is interested in new blood as it were, especially girl blood - hence Rey being this ridiculous character that trounces all the boys etc.

But surely, they've been taking notice at the sheer rejection of their sequel trilogy and the mostly lacklustre response to the bulk of their TV fare?

I cannot imagine that anyone, anyone, was clamouring for a Rey movie, especially on the back of the bad taste that the sequels left in everyone's mouth.

Like yourself, I'm not interested. But I may have been more warm to the idea had Rey actually been a good, well written, character. Or at least something beyond "Great, can and will do anything and everything cos whatever".

Into the bargain, I think it might be fair to say that a lot of people have rejected this era they keep trying to push as well. Disney shit the bed with the state of the galaxy, as it were, and created (and I use that word lightly) a half assed "universe" which made no bloody sense. I have no faith that they can salvage that even if this thing is supposed to be taking place 9 years later.

In any case, as I said, fingers crossed this will end up being memory hole'd like a lot of other announced Star Wars projects.

I don't think so. I see enough Grogu backpacks and the like to speculate the franchise appears popular enough with kiddos, that something less pandering to us grey heads makes simple economic sense. We've seen that with the TV material with its cartoons - stands to reason it might eventually pivot on Film as well.

Not sure Rey is the right launchpad for this, for sure - but again, what do I know? Of the grouped opinions I've ever read WRT the Sequel Trilogy, I've never seen any from someone under 18. Disney would be fools not to pivot towards the younger audiences to keep the franchise relevant and profitable - even if inevitably that might cause tension with the older audience annoyed because <insert reasons>.

I don't generally buy into the "they're films for kids about Space Wizards", especially in light of output like Andor showing the kind of mature range the universe can accommodate ... but equally, sometimes it is worth remembering that .. yeah. Foundationally, it's a film series for kids, about Space Wizards; those demographics mightn't be champing at the bit for Rey specifically, but easier to fashion a film from a preexisting character than a film centred around someone new.

As to Rey herself? I'm not so dismissive because as we've already seen, her backstory was rewritten (to placate the angry fan cohort; that went well), I'd suspect the same will happen again. Set it far enough into the future that enough time can pass & the writers just ignore the Palpatine stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,932 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

Grogu's biggest draw was probably "women of a certain age". For the first time ever I saw middle aged women talking about Star Wars and that was purely down to the Baby Yoda show. They're most likely the ones forking out for merch backpacks for the tykes too. Jesus my own Mrs was asking when the next Mandalorian episode was out during S01 and she never gave a tinkers cuss about any of this crap before.

But the core audience is still probably blokes and it always will be, whether they're 18 or "grey heads". Sure, Disney need to find new blood as I said, but pushing a characterless nothing supergirl like Rey is not the way to do it. If Disney had been smart they'd have just quietly dropped the sequel era and its wretched "characters" and moved on to something else. They've shown that when they puts the minds to it they can produce great material, like 'Rogue One' and 'Andor', both of which have received (almost) universal praise from the fanbase, as far as I've been able to gather. While everything else has run the gamut of terrible to mediocre and has divided fans in the most palpable way.

As for Rey being rewritten to placate anyone, I've never really bought into that TBH. If the case truly was that Disney rewrote anything because of a noisy online retort, then they would probably just have dropped the character altogether after the sequels whimpered to a halt. But here we are with a Rey movie of all things. I think what really happened was that Disney had no story and no characters for their trilogy and were floundering around, making things up on the fly. Plus if they really thought that making Rey a relative of Palpatine (WTAF?) would placate angry fans, then that only solidifies what I've thought about Disney's custodianship in that they just simply do not have the faintest idea what to do with this thing.

The Mandalorian season 3 has been a bizarre case of a show completely without an ounce of purpose, direction or energy. I wasn't incensed by the Jack Black stuff because at this stage it's like, sure, why not guys; not like they're even trying anymore so why get angry? At least that episode felt like it wanted to have a little fun - and that alone made a refreshing change from the tedious & pompous "This is the way" Boba Fett cosplayers we've been hanging around with.

Dave Filoni increasingly feels less like some Star Wars equivalent of Kevin Feige, and more like a spoofer fanboy; one who just wants to bash all his toys together without knowing how to construct a coherent narrative - or characters worth a damn. At this point I'm not worried about interest in a Rey centred film, but Dave Filoni turning the franchise into this treadmill of humourless canon-suffocating rubbish only internet fanboys will lap up.

Oh it looks like Aardman, but the characters don't have that rictus expression the studio has used throughout the entirety of its catalogue; I'm not surprised 'cos it's a very goofy style that mightn't have worked with Star Wars

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,821 ✭✭✭Relikk

Favreau is the main showrunner and writer, not Filoni. Filoni has co-written a couple of this seasons episodes, sure, one of those we have yet to see, but he has only solo written two episodes previously, The Gunslinger from season one and The Jedi from season two. Filoni's efforts in animation are also quite good overall, so I can't agree that Filoni is overly affecting anything anyone is currently seeing in the live action series.

I'll probably get around to watching the rest of series 3 at some stage, but TBH I just don't have a goo for it at the moment. To me the show reached its natural conclusion at the end of series 2 when baby Yoda was handed off to Luke. As you say, it feels like the show it just treading water now, with any purposeful reason to swim on.

As for being angry etc, you're right, why bother? But that feels like the default state of reaction to the entire franchise under Disney.

I've never bought into the Filoni baloney, no matter what level of input he has. Some fans seem to want to think that he's the natural successor to Lucas, but I've only ever just seen him as a chancer in a cowboy hat.

This sounds a bit like the Jon Snow-centered Thrones sequel, but even more pointless because in Star Wars everything has been resolved twice and now they're somehow (Palpatine has returned) going to have to unresolve it to justify a new story based around a not-very-interesting character...

4 out of 2022's Top 10 Worldwide grosses were Disney movies; so far Ant-Man 3 sits atop 2023's, and there are a number of releases coming who might join it by December.

You may not like Rey - I don't and have immediate questions about any movie involving her - but I'd never bet against Disney making bank. They didn't swallow 20th Century Fox like it was a snack, without having some idea how to monetise its ideas.

There are story ideas that could work using Rey, if the concept is her seeking out Jedi to join a new Academy: you could have a fun bit of planet hopping as she tries to find potential candidates, racing the inevitable Sith who'll show up trying to do same. If it's just another Super-Weapon story, then boo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,930 ✭✭✭nix

Yeah but the thing with antman, its cost to make/market cost more than what it has earned last i checked. So the box office it made is a loss for disney regardless.. Also to take into account, Disney dont get the entirety of the box office, the theaters get a big chunk of that, im not sure what the breakdown of that is though, i would guess its a lot though as it wouldnt be worthwhile otherwise to run a theater 😄
