The Joe McDonagh Cup is part of the All-Ireland Championship. The top 2 qualify for the Preliminary Quarter-finals.

Wicklow in the NR is a bit of a joke. Only reason for relegation last year was that most of the players wouldn't play under the old manager. As a county we are fielding circa 20 adult teams over 3 divisions. This year the county team is back to full strength so it won't be nice seeing us playing the likes of Fermanagh, Louth etc...

Are any of this weekend's Joe McDonagh matches being streamed anywhere?

  • Registered Users Posts: 671 ✭✭✭supernova5

Don't see any info anywhere on live coverage of the Joe Mac, its pretty shameful of the association and all involved to dismiss this.

will probably be reduced to 90 seconds of highlights on Sunday night Sunday game for a few rounds robin games

There are great games at this level, really competitive and entertaining. Was at two lower tier league finals last weekend, they were the best matches ive seen this year. RTE have no interest whatsoever in hurling outside of Liam McCarthy/Division one level and GaaGo seem to have nothing planned.

You can imagine the effort that hurling people in these counties have to put in to keep the game going, but its just ignored really. Rte don't even read out results of lower tier matches on the Sunday Game.

Seems to be a focus on playing off these competitions in as quick a time as possible. All these counties seasons will be over before the end of May, with an 8 month gap to their next competitive fixture. Cheddar Plunkett making some interesting points on the effects of this on team and player development on the Smaller Fish podcast this week.

you got it 100% C4000, they throw around a few sound bites every so often " ahh sure arent such and such [3rd/4th tier county] doing a great job to keep hurling alive at all" the most patronising sh**e imaginable

truth be told apart from a few mavericks and genuine hurling lovers the GAA never had a REAL interest in promoting and expanding the game outside of the top 10/12 counties

They feel as though they have done their rightful duty then annually by showing live coverage of the Joe McDonagh Cup final

there is an urgent need of a dedicated GAA [or Hurling only] channel to provide well deserved exposure to these lower tier tournaments

League form been shown its means very little

Kildare getting hammered by Carlow 4-13-0-4

Bizarre scoreline. Kildare put so much into the league campaign.....very harsh for them to have first round of the championship 6 days after losing the final.

I was at my own county's League final last week and if you reckon the lower tier finals are the best games all year you must have only seen 2 games.

  • Registered Users Posts: 530 ✭✭✭C4000

Been at plenty of matches, the offaly v kildare and cavan v Leitrim games last week were the most enjoyable games in terms of competitiveness with evenly matched teams going all out to win.

That's got to be about more than just league form. That's a bizarre score

Down 1-14 Kerry 1-26, Ballycran FT

Offaly 3-19 Laois 1-22, Glenisk O'Connor Park FT

Carlow 5-23 Kildare 0-19, Netwatch Cullen Park FT

Final Scores - Offaly beating Laois the most significant result there, the 6 day turnaround didnt bother Offaly.

Laois and Carlow will be interesting on Saturday. It could go a long way in determining who'll be taking on Offaly in the final.

Good to see that 2 Joe McDonagh matches are being streamed this weekend.

The Joe McDonagh has been a great tournament so far,Offaly looking odds on forml a final place and it's a right battle for the final place with 2 rounds remaining. Kildare and Down as good as out and there game in Round 5 will most likely be a relagation playoff

Round 4 (weekend 6th/7th May)- Offaly vs Kerry, Laois vs Kildare, Down vs Carlow

Round 5 (13th May)- Kildare vs Down, Carlow vs Offaly, Kerry vs Laois

Moreover, Kerry will feel slightly aggrieved, as in recent seasons, including last month, they've only been edged out by Offaly by a single point on each occasion, so will fancy their chances of causing an upset in Tullamore.

Reckon offaly will still need another win to secure a final spot. If they were to lose to Kerry in the next round they'd likely be in 3rd going into the final round away to Carlow. They were laboured enough against Down today, though ultimately won well.

Round 5 of the Joe McDonagh takes place tomorrow with Offaly who have already qualified for the final travelling to Carlow while Kerry face Laois in Tralee.. Carlow, Kerry and Laois are all still within reach of 2nd place

A Carlow win will secure them 2nd place but defeat would mean the winner of Kerry vs Laois would finish 2nd. A draw between Kerry and Laois coupled with a defeat for Carlow would mean 2nd place would be decided on scoring difference. Possibly scoring difference if Carlow were to draw as themselves, Laois or Kerry would be on 7pts and head to head won't count because they drew when they played

Kildare vs Down is a relagation playoff with the loser been relegated to the Christy Ring Cup for 2024.

I think Offaly being through gives Carlow a big advantage to progress.

    Big day for Kildare

Kildare have been a big let down in the Joe McDonagh. Having almost gone up to Div 1 they could find themselves in the Christy Ring next year again. While they should have enough to get over Down it's anything but guaranteed.

On another note while they haven't got he results but Fermanagh in the Nicky Rackard, considering they've only one club, have put in some very good displays.

Sligo have also done very well in the Christy Ring this year.

From the few Kildare games I was at they were very negative/defensive - think Herity got his tactics wrong looked like they were scarred to go toe to toe. Were never likely to do anything.

Disaster for Kildare to get relegated after such a good league. Hard to know how it has gone so badly wrong. First half of the league final it looked like they were going to blow Offaly away but since that point they've completely fallen apart. Was at a couple of their matches as a neutral and would agree with comments above re tactical approach.

Christy Ring Cup Final- Meath vs Derry

Nicky Rackard Cup Final- Wicklow vs Donegal

Lory Meagher Cup Final- Monaghan vs Lancashire

They'll be dancing in the streets of Blackpool and Burnley if Lancashire bring home the Lory Meagher Cup

The prize of winning the Joe McDonagh cup may be bigger than normal this year if Wexford are relegated. A Leinster championship with Westmeath and Antrim in it next year would leave 3 teams who are fairly evenly matched in the grand scheme of things competing with each other.

I do think though the current arrangement of the finalists playing preliminary All Ireland 1/4 finals is a waste of everyone's time.

Whoever wins has achieved their objective for the year and that should be the end of it on a real high note for them.

Whoever loses will be demoralised, and a couple of weeks later they will be cannon fodder for Limerick or Cork.

While few would agree with him i still think the All-Ireland Intermediate should be brought back. The issue with everyone outside of the top tier is they just don't play enough games. For example with an Intermediate All-Ireland that was straight knockout you could have the following.

Munster with Kerry and the others Intermediate teams. Leinster Carlow. Kildare and Laois along with Kilkenny, Wexford, and Dublin Intermediate teams. Ulster everyone bar Antrim who would have an Intermediate team. Connacht Mayo, Roscommon and Sligo along with Galway Intermediates.

I could never understand why counties didn't use it morewhen it was there, as it is was perfect way to blood younger players. If it was brought back it would give McDonagh Cup etc teams a bit of extra game time with teams who would be a steep above them but not lightyears ahead.
