Lorcan Tucker take a bow, what a performance. Sensational. Phenomenal effort from all today!

Well done to Lorcan Tucker on his century. Rode his luck a little but a great display of fortitude, how long can he keep it going?

Great coverage from RTE Sport again this morning. Des Cahill's spiel was based on last night's close of play. He seemed blithely unaware that a few hours of play had gone by already at 8.30 and hadn't even bothered to check the score. Imagine reporting the half time score of a GAA match with the game well into the second half or even finished. Very lazy sports journalism.

If we can see out the day again here and bat into tomorrow morning, we'll be doing very well.

Not long enough unfortunately… 108 and gone, fine innings though.

top order batsmen failing again, big time. Four of our top five batsmen with single digit scores.

Cant end up 13/4 and expect to win a test…

Tucker, McBrine and Tector really bailing us out to get us 265/8 but a 110 run lead and 2 wickets left is pretty much no use… our goose is cooked… I was hoping we might have got a lead of 220 but with Adair gone, so is that hope.

possibly two sub 300 totals, can’t do much with that.

Taijul Islam is having a day and a half. 35 overs, 14 maidens, 4 wickets and conceded 2.25 runs an over, deserving of a five for. 40% of his overs so far, maidens.

They do that with golf as well, report scores from 2 hours previous, pity Ireland didn't get a few more in the first innings, 214 left them chasing the game, and Bangladesh scored too quickly, but the second innings looked like around 80 all out, but is amazingly 284/8 as I type this, so that is encouraging. I wonder if they can push the lead past 150, might be competitive

Not only was he unaware that play had started 3 and half hours previously, he also gave an incorrect score of 28-5 instead of 28-4, as was the case in several of their bulletins yesterday.

Their Game On program on 2FM on Tuesday had Ruby Walsh interviewing Barry McCarthy, who spoke very well but did seem a little surprised when Ruby asked him what the Irish batsmen would be doing on Wednesday morning while the Irish bowlers were bowling!

Close on 286/8, very good day, 259 runs and lost only 4 wickets, Tucker McBrine and Tector outstanding, lead by 131

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Well I was wrong for sure! Great application today to bat the full day for the loss of 4 wickets, some decent partnerships. Very sensible from McBrine there at the close. You'd wonder what's going on in the heads of Balbirnie & others etc who managed just 5 runs for 4 wickets in just 6 overs.

Good nights rest now and let's hope we add a few more tomorrow.

No surprise that Ruby Walsh would show that level of ignorance, Racing and nothing else is his specialist subject, fine jockey, but his racing brain doesn't appear to extend to other areas, thick necks in that family, inherited from Ted, a master bullshitter, 20 years on RTE racing, never tipped a winner, too good for the ordinary punter.

Stunning days cricket from Ireland. If that was an established team it's be a brilliant fightback never mind a team with no real first class experience.

The second best day of test cricket this side has put together.

If they could add 50 more, you just never never know.....

Regardless of the result, this has turned into a very strong performance, one well above what I expected TBH.

Best day of the tour by far. All you can realistically ask is for Ireland to be competitive and I'm sure many of us feared that Ireland would crumble quickly this morning if they lost early wickets, but they stuck at it all day. Considering their lack of experience in this format and playing away in Asia, this was over and beyond what was expected.

I almost wanted Bangladesh to score over 400 yesterday and keep Ireland from batting as it was a no win last session for them yesterday, but they did everything right today.

Haven't seen anything of the game, but the pitch appears to be holding up pretty well so the lead would need to somehow to get to at least to 200 and hope the pitch starts to go but even at this score, they have a small chance.

Yeah, the longer they can spin it out tomorrow and add runs, the better. Hume has a few runs to his name in the stats, so he can bat. Hope springs eternal.....

They did us proud today. A great day for test cricket.

Fourth innings in Asia are rarely straightforward. Hume isn’t a walking a wicket, in fact he looks quite solid so potential is there for a few more. Tough long day in the dirt for Bangladesh, that could pay dividends yet. Shakib looks disinterested. They could fall apart.

fair play to them for bouncing back

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,128 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

I've been kind of afraid to look at the score, was a nice surprise to see 286/8 at stumps.

They showed real heart and grit today and played some proper Test cricket. McBrine absolutely outstanding 71 not out and a 6 wickets taken Tucker was absolutely immense as well delighted for him to get his ton. Hopefully Hume and McBrine can hang around till lunch tomorrow and build up a decent lead.

That was a great turn around. If only the opening batsmen had dug in last night! Entering today with, say, 10 or 20 for none or one would have given us a real chance.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

292 all out, Bangladesh chasing 138 to win

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Litton Das opened and went like a scalded cat, bowled by Adair for 23, Bangladesh 32/1

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,275 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Pitch hasn’t deteriorated to what you’d expect for Mirpur. Only day four still mind, needed to take it deeper. Comes back to the start of our second innings that.

Bangladesh have been good, very aggressive in breaking the back of what could have been a tricky chase.

Great performance despite the result. Tough place at the best of times never mind going there for your first test in 4 years

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

A pity that McBrine & Hume couldn't hold out for a good spell this morning but a lot to ask the lower order when the first few went so quickly & cheaply. We also had problems breaking partnerships in their 1st innings, after a great start.

What do they call it, an honourable defeat. Like the soccer the other week and so on.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Did ok, but a few runs light in the first innings

  • Registered Users Posts: 277 ✭✭Guildenstern

Likewise with Des Cahill, the RTE 6.01 news last night could only refer to Ireland leading, leaving the casual viewer thinking we were about to win the Test.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,477 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

True, but the honourable defeat tag has been one Irish cricket teams have been happy to hang its hat on for too long.

the record books will not be sugar coating it.

Ireland just suffered a 7 wicket defeat to Bangladesh.

Our top / middle order batting is a big concern. Lower middle order / tail can’t and won’t always be the life raft.

form of the captain ? can Balbernie be the difference….Lead by example ? Scores of 16 and 3 in this test… Did nothing in the shorter format here either.

need to stop relying on a wagging tail.

Batsmen need to score runs and bowlers need to take wickets… that’s just cricket…

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Sure, look at the top three of our order this past test match - just 40 between the three, over two innings, average abt 6. That's like flying on one wing. I wonder will Tector be moved up, I know it can be tough the first few overs but he seems to have the temperament for it?

  • Registered Users Posts: 39,573 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Ireland assuming they don't get the last automatic qualifying spot will be in a group with west indies, uae, Netherlands and Oman in the qualifying tournament

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,275 ✭✭✭Gillespy

Tough start in Galle. Lost the toss and Sri Lanka are 124/1 going at four runs an over. Campher taking the wicket.

    Sky channel 419 to watch.

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

Tough conditions to bowl in, but only 3 maidens is a problem. Too easy for Sri Lanka to score. They need to learn that they need to patiently build pressure on these flat tracks.

One problem with Ireland's brief first class structure was the pitches were too bowler friendly. Bowlers never needed to work hard for wickets so lack that patience.

This is all part of the learning process, this was always going to be Ireland's most difficult test match.

    245/1 after 56…Tea

Sri Lanka probably going to post around 340-350.

no reason with 9 wickets remaining for them not to put the foot down…. 340/3 would still be an incredibly positive day, for them.

out of our depth. All very well pitting our wits and skills against the worlds best in limited overs where we have the skillset on the right day to pull off a result occasionally, those formats suit us….

hopefully the experience is a valuable one.
