Was thinking that too, If conditions not helping to take wickets, need to tighten on the scoring and build a bit of pressure. 3 maidens still in 58 overs in a test match.. not good enough.

The outfield is like absolute lightning…a steady push and its racing away.

McBrine now bowling useless half trackers. Adair too short too.

really need some express pace bowlers on a pitch like this… bowling 87 mph plus….consistent line , length.

Looking more like 400 by close!! Sri Lanka to post 550ish tomorrow and declare? Any prospect of a win is gone out the window. Would we have the nous/ gumption to take this and bat for a draw from the start. Three and a half days to survive??? Only logical things to do. Strumms won't be happy but :)

Yes I think I was wrong, certainly closer to 400, putting the boot down now…🫣

our inability to take wickets on docile pitches is frustrating.

that said Balbernie goes upstairs… unlucky, about a centimetre past the glove or as the third umpire says ‘inconclusive’.

    so few chances though.

    386/4

Sri Lanka holding the aces now…

They can afford to bat through the first session… don’t have to do anything spectacular.

another 120 runs or so.. Brings a lead of 500 plus.

interesting that Balbernie waited until the last few overs to give his bowlers some help and have some slips and close catchers.

Declaration coming when these lads get their centuries I guess. Kinda toothless bowling in between occasional revival.

Next comes a test of Balbirnie's leadership. Do we just start hoicking it and lose our opener wickets cheaply or do we buckle down and play for the only possible result, given our resources. Could we survive 3+ days with 20 wickets???

Sri Lanka closed on 591/6d, including 4 tons, hopefully some fight with the bat, but as the commentary team pointed out this is Irelands 5th ever test, and Sri Lanka are appearing in their 308th

0/1, good ball and all that, but that Murray Commins looks like a rabbit

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

So does Balbernie, 4/2, ridiculous start

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Another 'great' captains innings to follow up after Bangladesh efforts. Hits a boundary first ball was it and gone 3 balls later.. ffs.

Not great to be so critical but a bit of fight wouldn't go amiss. Just leaving it up to Tector and middle order again to salvage a little pride.

71/2 now Tector and McCollum digging in.

Terrible shot from Campher, didn't know it was the last over of a T20, 74/4, deserved duck

  • Registered Users Posts: 437 ✭✭TipsyMcStagge

Christ I'm some jinx! Awful from Campher just dig in and try and keep your wicket.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

McCollum batted well got a good one, out for 35, 85/5

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,239 ✭✭✭✭Furze99

Falling apart now.. the rot set in early though.

Looking down the barrel now of an innings and 2-300 runs defeat :(

  • Registered Users Posts: 437 ✭✭TipsyMcStagge

5 down now a collapse incoming up to Moor and Tucker to save the day

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

The usual Irish batting, one wicket brings 3! I'd love to see what goes on in that dressing room, all the batsmen seem obsessed with following each other back into it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 25,477 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

    591/6d vs 92/6....

Fùck..... we were likely to lose but to be so uncompetitive is a real bummer... pitch looks like a real flat deck... just bad batting.... maybe we can scrape 260.. but unlikely...

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

Realistically Ireland could have four innings here and still lose by an innings. The batting is just not test standard, particularly in spinning conditions.

We seem incapable of just a basic opening stand, no mad rush to score but occupy the wicket for a good spell. To lose 2 wickets so quickly again has to be very dispiriting for the rest of the batting order. They must have been cursing under their breath today after a long day and a half in the field.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

143 all out, Tucker top scored with 45, Jayasuriya 7/52, chief wrecker

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

    Sent in again, 448 behind

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

Murray Rabbit made a pair, 0/1

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

8/2, Balbernie fails again, 6, and could have been out more than once, in no form at all, same heads failing all the time

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,833 ✭✭✭Mysterypunter

41/5, that Moor got a duck as well, he doesn't even resemble a cricketer

Awful stuff, I guess the lack of coverage in Ireland is a bit of a blessing in disguise when you get hammered like this

  • Registered Users Posts: 729 ✭✭✭wicorthered

Nightmare stuff. Pathetic really. Yet again 3 wickets fall for zero runs to end the first innings. It happens so often it must be a plan. "Ok guys if a wicket falls, give them another 2 straight away. We'll tire the bowlers that way". It's amateur stuff.

As for the second innings. Wow embarrassing. Poor Commins is out of his depth, Balbirnie is just not a captain. Four collapses at the top now and the captain has been part of all. Where's the captains knock? No leadership, no fight, he's not and never has been a captain.

Someone has to be, but Balbernie seems to lose patience and play too many shots, miles away from the player who scored a match winning hundred in Hampshire, think Stirling got one in that game too, a win over England, and I think Stirling is available for the 2nd test, maybe he could do a Chris Gayle, and get 300 😃
