Hope this is the right thread. Bought a second hand 06 VW Polo as a runaround. Car in great nick but want to swap out the radio to a touch screen so I can hook up the iPhone. Any suggestions? Also the headlights are foggy (or crusty as my kid says)... I read using a compound to clean them is a good way to go. Would you recommend a leaning agent or compound I can pick up locally in Blanch?

    Thanks

If you didn't want to spend much I fitted one of these recently took less than 5 minutes, it uses your phone as the screen and brain and charges at the same time (i use cable just a few inches long). let's me use the apps on my phone rather than dedicated android auto/car play works fine and good sound https://www.halfords.ie/technology/car-audio/car-stereos/pioneer-sph-10bt-smartphone-receiver-737373.html

You'll get a kit in the autofactors for about €15 which will have some attachments for your drill and compound to clean the lenses. Can't remember the brand, autoglym have one but it's about €40 you don't need to spend that much though.

Cheers! Really appreciate that. Do you reckon I change the lightbulbs on the headlights to a brighter LED?

Meguairs, Autoglym etc do a headlight restoration kit. Has various compounds and sandpapers to get rid of the yellowing. That probably the best route for that.

One other thing that is neglected 99% of the time is the cabin/pollen filter. Sometimes it has never been changed from the factory and it is an easy DIY job. Improves the air quality a lot when you do it.

A Haynes manual is always good to have too. You can pick them up very cheaply on eBay.

Best of luck with the new motor.

Folks one more question. Back on the radio, after looking at prices, i’m probably better staying clear of the the cheaper touchscreen and am going just to get a single din radio with bluetooth and usb charging. I’ve a double din radio, i take it i can get a fascia with one single din slot?

    Cheers

Facial would be a waste of space get a cubby for it, have a look on adverts or done deal or try some VW breakers, think this will fit https://www.stevensvwspares.com/vw-golf-compartments-consoles/dash-storage-cubby-tray-compartment

excellent so i can just one of them and stick the single din a live it? brilliant. Everyday a school day. been googling like mad looking for a double din fascia. If i had a the money i’d buy a good carplay headunit but all the cheap ones seem to be balls of shite. So if I can get a decent single din new or second hand with bluetooth and usb i’d settle for that. thanks again

Can’t say I agree with this. They’re rip off merchants. They wanted 100 quid for an ignition coil from me.

motor factors in town charging 75.

got one at a scrapyard for 20 in the end.

That one I linked to in Halfords is decent and cheap. Has a inbuilt phone holder that can be hidden away.

Is it legal to use LED bulbs as headlights in Ireland?

Yes, once they are type approved, fitted to compatible vehicles and the light beam does not dazzle other road users.

Though given the number of vehicles that seem to be out of adjustment regarding glare it's not adhered to.

Note I have no problems with 'ordinary' headlights so don't think it's my eyes:)
