Old UK reg car sitting in Irish garage...

Having returned home to Ireland some years ago, I left a 30 year old 1 litre SUV in the garage we have here.

A combination of other projects, Covid and Brexit have meant I never got round to doing anything with the car.

It runs fine. Great off-roader. It's a shame to let the car go to waste. It'll still be running in 10 years and won't need an NCT.

I'd like to register it but Revenue want import or Irish off-road documents, neither of which exist.

    What are my options?

Did you try a mot history, that'll prove it was off the road, shouldn't be much milage difference between it's last MOT and the current milage.

I asked the same question to Revenue and await their answer. Something robotic, no doubt.

Are you willing to pay vrt on it?

I don't think there is any point in fighting. If it's in your name on a UK V5, you could pay vat and duty on it now against a very low value claiming that you just brought it into the country.

Vrt also couldn't be a huge number.

They wanted proof of recent arrival, otherwise I have to pay a penalty for each month it's been in the country. Considering how many years it's been sitting here, apart from the odd run around the field, I could probably buy a Rolls with the penalty they have in mind.

Over 30 years old makes it VRT category C. VRT is €200 and AFAIK max late payment on Cat C is also €200 but is sometimes waved. VAT might be an issue if you can't show the car was here before Brexit.

Maybe ask a mod to move this into the classic car forum and you'll probably get more accurate advice.👍️

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

This advice is spot on. 0% duty too as its vintage. You just need to get the paperwork in order. V5 etc
