used car under 7k

    Hello all,

Time to pick up a used car. Ball park usage of 10k per year. Reliability is key. Ive had a few cars with the 1.6 Hdi engine and to be honest im tired of the dpf, egr, turbo issues. Im hoping a petrol will give less hassel. Im not 100% against a diesel if you can recommend a decent one. Insurance may be an issue because I have not had a car policy in over 7 years ( I commute on a motorcycle and Im a named driver on my wife's policy).

At the moment after reading through some threads im thinking a Civic or Megane. When I do use the car it will be a 80 mile round trip. Mostly motorway.

    Any recommendations are appreciated.

Ps I did have notions of picking up a small van a while back with it just seems too much hassel with DOE and insurance.

Would you consider a Hyundai i30 petrol. There's a 2012 blue one for sale on Done Deal with just 53k miles, (miles seems a bit on the low side for a 2012 ? !) condition seems v. good, asking price €7,990 Worth checking out if you're in that neck of the woods. Other petrol models to consider are Toyota Corolla, VW Golf & Ford Focus

    Honda Civic petrol:

Probably as reliable as you can buy. 1.8 litre would be more enjoyable but 1.4 litre will probably be more insurance friendly given your lack of NCB.

I would consider them. Just out of my price range. It would depend on insurance.

Nice car. How do people view an ad when the price is dropped so much? Is it a warning sign. Has it been advertised for ages and of so why hasn't it sold? Am I reading too much into it?

It seems to be a good bit cheaper than other 2012 examples for sale as well as having low mileage. Seems too good to be true in today's used car market so could be some sort of scam. Would definitely err on the side of caution.

I do like the look of the Kia ceed. Anything to look out for.

Any thoughts on a 131 Mazda 3 sport se 1.6D. Do they suffer the same engine issues as the Mazda 6?

    Mazda petrol good reliability

Mazda diesel not so good on reliability

The steering wheel and bolster for drivers seat show alot of wear for a car with 120k km , do these look normal for a Honda civic , otherwise bodywork looks clean but agree a big price drop seems unusual, if it checks out it seems a reasonable price in this market

I thought it was the mazda 6 or 2.2 skyactive engine that gives issues. So avoid the mazda 3 1.6 also?

The 1.6 diesel in the Mazda 3 is the same 1.6 HDi engine found in Peugeot/Citroen/Volvo and Ford that you said you had troublesome experiences of in the past. If you want to stick with diesel then a Renault Megane or Fluence would be a better bet. 1.5dci would be a decent engine.

    For example:

Not the best example to be honest. It has 50 shades of silver on it with each panel looking to have been painted a different shade. Most of the panels line up very poorly too. I'd say that car got a few fair smack and was poorly/cheaply repaired. For that sort of money I'd be wanting something a lot more straight.

I bought a 2013 kia ceed sw for 8k in 2019. just general maintenance and a couple of bushings. car has 128k miles on it (new shape 1.6 diesel)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,717 ✭✭✭pgj2015

Good point, I had wondered if the back bumper was a different shade of silver.

I probably over egged the 1.6 hdi issues. Main issue was 2 different mechanics wanting to change out parts to see if it solves issues with no guarantee it would fix it. Seems everyone just wants to map out or blank off dpf/egr issues. Ill keep an eye on the diesels so.

Any harm looking at the Megane GT line? Just talking with insurance and its not looking as bleak as I thought.

Well a petrol engine generally has less to go wrong.

Toyota Prius or Auris hybrids might suit your driving and budget.

Mate I have an Astra 1.6cdti with a new clutch and flywheel 2014. Very nippy little car for sale just today. Just picking up something bigger for sale at 5750. Full leather.

Excellent car, and probably would suit the chap perfect...problem is a honda fit is it's technically a Japanese import, he hasn't had a car policy in over 7 years so insurance would be bananas if it's even insurable

I just bought a Honda CRV 2007 with one owner and 100,000kms. Full service history and all NCT certs for €4,400. A lot of car for the money. If you wait and watch the ads everyday you’ll find the right car. Don’t rush into it.

As above, Honda Civic is your best bet. Incredibly reliable and a pleasure to drive and park :)

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I've realised I don't know what I want now. I'm even looking at audi and bmw. Yes I'm aware of the issues and repair costs.

I'm sick of people selling cars and using miles instead of kilometers. It's soul destroying seeing cars with over 300k still looking for the same money as cars with 200k etc.

Ps. The reason I'm looking at more luxury cars is there price is not massively off a bog standard motor. 2010/12 wise.

Lastly I've only been using donedeal to search. Any other sites to check out?

Mitsbishi colt is a good reliable car. A friend of mine bought one about 6 years ago for 4k. He has a total commute of 400 kilometers a week for work alone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 765 ✭✭✭Sir Galahad

Yup it’s a lot of money, I wanted a CRV and didn’t want to spend big money. Supply & demand, find another one owner genuine low mileage one in the spec you want in the week you need it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 512 ✭✭✭dvdman1

Crazy is right, but that's how the current market is.

Just added a 07 reg from the same honda model and inputted 100km into carzone valuation check

    Price €6350

That's the high end of course but expect pvt sellers to look for 4-5k

Half looking at suv but after listening to a radio article today it seems the greens want suv banned from city's. Probably 5 year from now though.

Do you want reliability? Go for Toyota or Honda if so, especially at that price point

    No chance of that happening.

The greens will most likely get a bit of a kicking next election.

And no one be they government or legislator will be able to agree on what an "SUV" actually is.

As the cost of living, including oil with all it's tariffs, levies, taxes etc. is constantly rising - the good people of Ireland are slowly but surely waking up to who the Greens really are and what they represent. Their ideology is so far from reality it beggars belief. Within the last week it came to light that we are importing wood chips from Brazil to fuel a power station in Offaly ...the station was previously fueled by locally produced turf but the Greens stopped all that. You just could not make it up. This is a long winded way of saying that the Greens future is Ireland is a bright as the PD party. So buy your SUV if it suits your needs, the real future is bright, full of hope and possibilities, including new fuels not yet imagined (not to be confused with the future predicted by the Green prophets of doom)

If your still on the market for a car, I owe a 2010 Megane 1.5 DCI bought in 2012 with 30k on the clock. In the first 2 years I averaged 45k a year with no issues. From around 2017/2018 it dropped back to 20k a year and since covid I only put it maybe 5k a year. In 11 years of ownership and now with 225k on the clock I have had the following done.

Front tires replaced every 30k, rear lasts around 45k. 15inch and just replaced all 4 for Bridgestone cost me 360 for a set.

Service every 30k or 12 months, costs about 200 but I do it myself now so it's a lot cheaper.

Timing belt every 150k or 6 years. Costs around 450 euro.

    Rear coils. About 200

    Wishbone NCT failure 130 euro

    Track rode NCT failure 60euro

    One battery about 100.

My overall ownership of the car has been pretty fautless, fuel use on a motorway is around 5.7L per 100km with easier driving about 4.8L per 100km. It's not very fast, mine is the 86bhp version but cheap and cheerful. If your looking at one get the GTI line, same engine just much better spec.

Thoughts on this? I haven't heard much about them good or bad.

Very low spec, but I've seen them clock up mad miles to be fair in both petrol and diesel.

I second a 2010-2015 Megane GT Line, loads of spec in them.
