Wallbox Pulsar Plus - WiFi disconnection issues

    Hello,

I had a Wallbox Pulsar Plus installed earlier this year and have had consistent WiFi issues since then. The charger will stay connected for 3-4 days and then disconnect randomly until the charger is manually restarted. Once connected again it will work for a few days and then disconnect.

    Things I've tried so far:

    * Restricted the device to 2.4GhZ WiFi only (in case it was having trouble switching between bands)

    * Assigned a static IP address

    * Restarted the charger multiple times

    * Restarted WiFi router multiple times

Has anyone experienced anything similar? Is hardwired Ethernet an option?

    Thanks!

Can you pop in a booster or extender between your router and wallbox to see if that helps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭trant

Range definitely isn't an issue, the charger is on the outside wall of the room where the router is located.

I have opened a ticket with Wallbox Support just in case.

I have had this issue. WiFi would stop working consistently after a few days.

I had to go to the settings to 'Restore' the Wallbox under the 'Installation Options' section.

This will restore the firmware to a previous version. From there I re-added the WiFi and then re-did the firmware update to the latest version. Has been all good ever since.

Interesting, I'll give this a go. Do you remember if it lost all of its charging settings etc. once restored?

  • Registered Users Posts: 313 ✭✭D_D

I'm not sure, I can't remember, but it did fix my wifi issues

If you've load balancing configured in the wallbox a restore will likely see the configuration for this wiped/lost (it did for me when a different issue saw the support group recommend a restore), so I'd say to make a note of the settings around that at least.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭trant

I know we have a Wallbox N1 CT power meter installed in the fuse box, but if I understand you correctly load balancing is for running two chargers off the same circuit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,776 ✭✭✭cython

No, load balancing is also for installations where there's another high draw load (electric shower, heat pump, etc.) present, and both running at full power would exceed the max rated supply. If you've a CT clamp and no solar the odds are that you have it set up, so I'd check the config in the app before any restore.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭trant

Thank you, will do. I think Wallbox call this "Power Boost"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,776 ✭✭✭cython

Correct, select the charge point in app, click on the settings gear, upgrades and then power boost to find it.

Thanks @cython and@D_D for all your help.

I've had the same issue and have tried this fix.

Hopefully it will keep WiFi access stable.

Btw in my case, once WiFi is gone I can't search on any hotspots it's like the charger app can't see them.

    Thanks all

Can i just ask does the Wallbox need to be connected to the WiFi all the time?

We got ours installed a couple of months ago and it worked fine on scheduled charging on the car's schedule (ioniq5). Over the last week or 2 though it's gotten completely unreliable and more often than not it doesn't work at all. We have tried using the Wallbox schedule but that doesn't work either. We usually turned our WiFi off at night but have tried leaving it on too but no joy.

The only change over the last while is that it was looking for a firmware update on the box a couple of weeks ago and we did that. It still worked for a few days after though, as far as I can remember, I'd definitely have noticed if it had stopped working straight after.

Any ideas? Our WiFi is mobile broadband so not 100% constant but I understood it only needed to be connected when changing schedules etc.

Also we're away at the moment, car at home and plugged in. Should we be able to set it to charge via the app remotely?

    Thanks for any help!

I got the Pulsar Plus November 2022, and a headache ever since

Perhaps okay in a home garage, but ours is an Apartment Building driveway, outdoors, so not sustainable

With the current Firmware 5.16.26 or 5.16.37, WiFi not only disconnects, it sends a Deauth Packet to the Access Point ( check your AP Log ), then stops

The 2 year old factory default firmware 5.3.17 properly reconnects

I am waiting on "Engineering" in Barcelona, Spain

    greg

The charger will stay connected for 3-4 days and then disconnect randomly until the charger is manually restarted

Just circling back on this. The restore did not resolve the WiFi disconnection issues for me, unfortunately. The charger can still be managed via Bluetooth but it's not ideal when away from home.

It seems I am not the only person experiencing ongoing issues with 5.16.26 and 5.16.37 (latest). @gdurniak do you happen to have a ticket number that I can reference with Wallbox support?

  • Registered Users Posts: 12 toolerb

We also have the wallbox Pulsar Plus charger. And having issues.

We have found that the car is plugged in and the charging schedule set to off peak (overnight) in the Wallbox App. This week we have found the car not charged - even though I get the notification from the App that the car has finished charging. (has happened a few times in the past, but a few times this week)

We are going out of our minds trying to figure out if its the car or the Wallbox. (no issues charging car in other places)

If wifi disconnects, will that effect the charging? we are on 4G MBB which can be a little dodgy... Im glad I came upon this thread and not the only one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭trant

WiFi disconnecting does not impact charging or schedules, in my experience.

If anyone has an existing ticket open with WallBox support please PM or post here so I can point them to it. They are "investigating" but also acting like it's an isolated incident, which it's clearly not.

Wallbox Support have advised that firmware version 5.17.34 has been released with "Improved connectivity".

I'm going to update this evening and see how it goes.

  • Registered Users Posts: 575 ✭✭✭Foreign Sports

I see it's available alright but my WiFi / cloud connectivity has been totally stable without any disconnection issues since I tried @D_D fix on 29th April (on v5.16.37)

Best of luck with it and let us know how it goes, hopefully it will be stable 🤞

No luck with 5.16.37 or 5.17.44. Wallbox support are blaming my WiFi connection but the router is less than 5m away.

@gdurniak would you happen to have your ticket number so I can share it with Wallbox support?

  • Registered Users Posts: 575 ✭✭✭Foreign Sports

Small update to say that v5.17.44 has been a disaster for me.

Had upgraded to it for a day or so and the charger stopped charging. All indications on the app was that it was ready to charge etc.

In the end I did a restore back to the original level v5.12.15 which is working perfectly fine.

I think mine has just done the exact same thing 😡

I never bother with those updates. I saw one last year that was meant to turn the lights off when not in use but it did nothing after installing so I just don't bother anymore... The Software version I have charges the car so I see no need to update it

  • Registered Users Posts: 575 ✭✭✭Foreign Sports

That does work actually for me. I find it quite handy and it ensures that the wallbox doesn't attract attention at night time.

Probably not a bad idea to not take any updates as they are way too flaky.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,867 ✭✭✭Red Silurian

I just switch it off at the isolation switch, lights gone then and no need for updates... We call it a charger but it's effectively just a 32A supply, more similar to a socket and shouldn't really need much software to operate

  • Registered Users Posts: 313 ✭✭D_D

Yep, looks like mine in now dead. Cannot connect to it by Bluetooth or wifi to restore it, and it won't charge the car. Brilliant.

  • Registered Users Posts: 575 ✭✭✭Foreign Sports

If you power cycle the wallbox itself (isolator switch or circuit board), the access should come back.

Then I'd suggest a restore back to original s/w until they fix this pretty huge bug!

Do people turn this off with the switch on the wall when not in use? I'm only changing every 10 days and it's lit up all the time, just wondering should I be switching it off?

You can turn it off, but there's also a "halo light" option in the settings that turn the lights off when the charger is not in use.

  • Registered Users Posts: 948 ✭✭✭Rusky rusky

It turns it off even when it’s in use:) A very handy option indeed.

New update 5.17.57, seems to have helped connection issues for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 332 ✭✭trant

Mine is still disconnecting, although it's staying connected for a bit longer.

Thinking of trying a range extender as Pulsar chargers seem to be very sensitive to WiFi connection quality issues. It's a pity as it's literally located outside the room where the WiFi router is located.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,149 ✭✭✭BobMc

i agree, i've a mesh system and my charger is about 2 ft from one of the hubs and it shows as poor signal

  • Registered Users Posts: 575 ✭✭✭Foreign Sports

I doubt it's a signal issue. My router is also about 2 ft from the wallbox unit itself.

When it's working with wifi, it has full signal.

It randomly disconnects after a time and it doesn't seem to matter which version of software you are on (I'm currently on default version as it seems the most stable).

I've been trying to get this point across to Wallbox Support for weeks, but they keep saying that their engineering teams are seeing WiFi disconnects. The signal has been measured at -60dBm and they say anything lower than -35dBm is unacceptable, which seems a bit far fetched to me.

I know others have gotten further, so if someone would like to PM me their ticket number(s) I'm all ears.

What frequency does the guest network go out on... My technical mind is telling me Wallbox doesn't like the 2.4/5 switching protocol in some modems

  • Registered Users Posts: 313 ✭✭D_D

So mine has lost all WiFi weeks ago and I haven't been bothered to fix it since... I have done everything to fix it; turning it off at the fuse, restoring the firmware to its factory setting (5.11.xx something like that), trying to update it to the latest firmware, nothing works... Still no WiFi... and since I reset the firmware, I have no way of getting it to the latest version (5.17.59 - it just fails to start every time over bluetooth) so I have lost the ability to turn off the LED lights when the Wallbox is not in action. So I have reverted to taping over the lights in an effort to bring less attention to the box at night 🙄

All in all, a really crap experience with the Wallbox Pulsar Plus.

I did open two tickets in the past to solve the WiFi issue, but since this third issue popped up I've followed the previous steps to no avail so I'm just not bothered anymore.

The Wallbox still charges the car though, which is the most important thing I suppose, but the WiFi in these things is just awful.

Im having the wifi issues too. If i do a restore it seems to work a while, then drops the wifi and when i go into settings and click wifi it will first show as off, so need to slide wifi on, and then will not find it, or not conistently.router is very close. have had exchanges with wallbox but still an issue

I will need to figure out how to turn on guest network. So this suggests it's having issues with some sort of password protocol?

Ended up getting a cheap range extender and installed it on the internal side of the wall where the Wallbox is mounted.

Given that this eliminates any possibility of WiFi dropping due to poor signal, I’m cautiously optimistic.

Mine router is about 2 metres away, and still had issues. Wallbox say there is an update coming. im pretty annoyed at this stage. no ethernet port either so cant even sort it that way.

What would be the need to connect to these boxes? Isn't everyone charging a night anyway?

    Free Palestine 🇵🇸

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭poker--addict

To setup the charge times at night. Sometimes I might only want to charge for an hour, for example if there is sun due the next day the solar will take care of it.

There are settings in box for solar too - total green which waits for large surplus to fill car, or half-green (blue) which if there is surplus solar but not enough to trigger car, it will top up with grid. So sometimes one may want total green, but if the day is a bit dull and car cant wait, people will change setting to blue.

Not a Wallbox user but I do have Shelly devices in my external charger and in my meter-box which I have some communication issues with. The WiFi AP is immediately behind the meter box (1meter away) and it's seeing a signal RSSI of -56dBm. The charger is about 2.5m away from the AP and it's seeing an RSSI of -74dBm. Anything below around -65dBm is poor.

The reason for the weak signal in my case is due to the foil lining on the insulated PIR sheets within the external wall, it's acting as an efficient blocker of the WiFi signal. What's I'd recommend is that you see if you can temporally move the AP or a Wifi extender into a window which has line-of-sight with the Wallbox and see if that improves the usability of the charger, the RSSI value should reduce somewhat if the signal strength is stronger. Maybe this helps!

FYI the "Eco Mode" settings can only be changed over Bluetooth.

My Wallbox is acting up something terrible lately, only stays charging for mins at a time, a restart of the box from the mains switch helps but not really making any progress,

Wallbox awful for replying to support query too! any ideas? I'm thinking next step is supplier/installer for perhaps warranty issue?

managed only one full charge without an interuption in last two weeks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,763 ✭✭✭poker--addict

I have found them good for replies, but took them a while to agree this was something for their software engineers and not me to troubleshoot- i had done all sorts with them, reinstalls, signal checks, different routers, 2.4g, 5g etc.

    😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,149 ✭✭✭BobMc

contacted support 3 different ocassions now and not had one response yet, left it a good few days in between too so its not like I contacted them 3 days running, did you get issues resolved at all, would a fresh connection to internet be worth trying ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,149 ✭✭✭BobMc

Late update email received yesterday evening, saying an engineer has approved a new replacement unit, to contact my original installer, I take it the installation of replacing the charger will be covered by them too! charger is only 5 months old
