100% Agree - I don't want any piece of the dog and pony show around Aaron Rodgers. We will have enough on our plate to sort out the team as is. I think Hunter Renfrow could easily be traded as well - last year was not a great year for him with injuries and form and he is a legacy player from Grudens time.

  • Registered Users Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

I'd like to see Renfrow given a chance but as you say he is a legacy player. Whats concerning me though is that we seem to be using Foxboro as a recruiting Centre, thats not necessarily a bad thing but an overdependance on the Patriots is a little hard to stomach, well for me anyways. Tuck Rule n all that!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Yeah its a tough one to stomach but its in the past - the stupid rule at the time was the problem not the Patriots. Doesn't make is any easier I know to see a team that made the playoffs get disassembled piece by piece for the 2nd time in the last 10 years.

I'm feeling very apprehensive about the draft. Ziegler and McDaniels are an unknown quantity as regards drafting, having had no picks in the first two rounds last year after the Adams trade. I am uneasy though, when it is abundantly obvious that the team can't make any progress until the defence is sorted out, that McDaniels may seek to copy Gruden and use a high pick on an offensive player such as a quarterback/o-lineman/tight end, that may be of little help to the team this year.

Facing Mahomes,Herbert and Wilson in their own division and having recorded one of the lowest sack totals in the league last year, relying solely on Maxx Crosby again won't work (unless Chandler Jones has a revival year) and neither will drafting a de or lb in the 4th round or later and hope they develop as Crosby has done. Trading up into the top 5 and picking a quarterback, and giving up your top picks this year and next for a player that won't play for a year or two, also stinks as an idea.

At this stage I'd grab Carter if he was still on the board, red flags and all. If they trade back, I'd only be prepared to go back 3-4 places, as we already have 12 picks(mostly on day 3), but there is a limit to how many rookies will make the 53 man roster.

So its defence, defence, defence for me. I'll also be waiting to see if rumours of draft day trades involving Josh Jacobs or Hunter Renfrow come to anything

Ive a feeling the raiders will make a trade with the steelers for the 32nd pick

If they do make a trade I hope its for a corner back, Porter would be a good addition.

  • Registered Users Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Okay, well I'm not disappointed with our draft. We didnt overreach in the 1st 2 rounds as we are used to seeing happen. We drafted D at no.7 and at least we didnt try to sell the farm to get a QB. I'm interested to see how the roster fills out in the 2nd wave of Free Agency, we need to get our hands on a starting ILB and address the secondary/O-line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Yeah its so hard to gauge the draft now until you see how the new players gel with the current squad but I am relieved to see there was a balance to Offense and Defense for the picks - if some of the defensive picks can contribute this year that would be really welcome.

  • Registered Users Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

I'm keeping my fingers crossed Kev, we can but hope!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Just looking at our first 4 games to start the season and it looks brutal - away to broncos , chargers and bills and home to steelers... it's going to be a rough start for Jimmy Garropolo . Hope our line can protect him

Jimmy gets the ball away faster than most, need a decent playbook but surely can’t go wrong with Adams, Meyers and Renfrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Well I really hope his foot surgery has gone well - that was a nasty surprise for sure. Seems like his contract has been reworked to give us some security in case he's not ready to go wk1. QB room is definitely a work in progress...

After so many years of failure its not hard to be pessimistic about a new season for the Raiders but I am seeing nothing to suggest to me that this season will be anything other then yet another losing season. Hope I am way off but looking at the first months schedule alone and it looks rough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

true its not been easy watching lately - the one positive I take from the NFL is that each season there is a chance to wipe the slate clean and if you get a few good performances in early momentum can kick in - look at 2014 when we made the playoffs with some clutch last minute wins. Talent wise I think the current team is better than that offensively. Defensively who knows but if you can score you have a chance.

However it goes we need to stay true to the new plan - no use in sacking head coaches and GMs every 2-3 yrs - we will never get anywhere with that strategy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,796 ✭✭✭eire4

All fair points and I like your optimism. Time will tell and especially that first 4 games given what a tough opening that is. How well the team ultimately does is probably going to come down to the defense IMHO as it certainly looks the team will be able to put points on the board.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

The more I see of the Josh Jacob's situation the more I see him sitting out this this season

McDaniels and the front office won't put a significant investment in RBs which I think is short sighted in this case. We lose a massive piece of our offense at a time when we could have relied on him to help out an injury prone QB with a shaky o line in pass protection.

Maybe there is a clever plan at work here but I can't see it....

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

I don't think Jacobs will sit out the season, it would cost him too much money. He can sit out training and pre-season games without being penalised financially but would be mad to sit out the whole season.

Running Backs just aren't valued in the NFL these days, it's hard to replicate a season like Jacobs had last year due to the sheer physical effects it takes on their bodies. As well as that, a rookie/year 1 or 2 starter playing at a decent level would be fine considering the weapons the Raiders have on offence. The bigger concern is the durability, or lack of it, of Garoppolo!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

For sure RBs are really undervalued - I cant see any of the RBs up for new contracts this year getting what they want. Still I would be surprised if we see him on the field week 1.

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

I agree, RBs are completely undervalued but that's the market in the NFL these days - average receivers get way more money than RBs. The last RB to hold out for a season, Le'Von Bell, admitted afterwards that it wasn't worth the financial hit and didn't improve his contract position so I'd be very surprised if Jacobs is not there for the first game. Same goes for Barkley at the Giants.

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

Aidan O'Connell looked calm and composed on Sunday, could be the back-up this season ahead of Hoyer if he keeps developing like this. Very impressed with the second string defense also, a lot more intensity, pressure and communication shown in one pre-season game than in most of last year's regular season!

very early in preseason but yes it was a really solid display from him on a first outing. looking forward to seeing him against the Rams this weekend. Also really good to see Tyree Wilson activated from the PUP list.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Aidan O'Connell again looked pretty solid against the rams backups - certainly had a better outing than Hoyer. It will be an interesting battle in the last week to see how they both fare vs cowboys for the QB2 spot

  • Registered Users Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

He did, didnt he? Its nice to see that we might have unearthed a nugget from the draft, its not an area of strength for us so a definite plus. The fact that he looks comfortable in McDaniel's offense shows that someone at last is doing their homework in the Scouting Department. The Defense is also getting a lot of praise, although I'm not listening to that, lets see what happens with Denver week 1. I'm neither excited nor disappointed with the offseason, which is strange for me. I'm hopeful that we might end up surprising some people and teams through the season, and it would be nice to be competitive for the majority of the season. Fingers crossed!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Yep Preseason is no way an indicator for how teams will do when the real season kicks off - teams hardly played any starters so cant get a good indication of where they are at. Away to Denver is a good test to see how we will be this year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

There are positive indications that the DL will be a lot stronger this season with associated benefits for the Defensive Backs, which is good news if it pans out that way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Good news to see Josh Jacobs signed 1yr deal. I think it's a win for both him and the raiders - he got more than the tag and we get a quality RB for this season.

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

Yep, he was never going to be a hold-out this season. Gets a better deal than Barkley at the Giants too!

  • Registered Users Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

I'm almost afraid to be optimistic but Jacobs signing definitely makes the Offense a lot better. We will go as far as the Defense and Jimmy G's health takes us but I think he is a decent QB and he seems very assured in his role (Unlike a lot of Raider forums, I refuse to compare him to "He who cannot be named"!! LOL). Roll on Denver, I say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

likewise I am not overly optimistic on this season - I feel like the defense still needs some additions specifically at linebacker and safety. Anything over 7 wins will be a success with the schedule we have.

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

Yep, the schedule is pretty brutal so 7+ wins would be a really good season. It's some turnaround with the roster - only 14 players remain from the pre-Ziegler/McDaniels era so the pressure will start to mount on them if the next couple of seasons are disastrous.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

I'll take a win any day in Mile high. Defense did a good job holding Denver to 3pts in the second half. Jakobi Meyers looks like he will be a good WR2 to Davante Adams. Hopefully they can get Hunter Renfrow some opportunities as well

  • Registered Users Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

It certainly looks like we have a really good WR corps this season. Not much showing from the TE's to date and Jacobs looked rusty but I'll take that result every day of the week and twice on Sunday! Defense played well in the second half. So we sit atop the AFC West! Away to Buffalo next week. I'm saying it now, I'm not expecting much from this. They will be furious with the Week 1 result and will be looking to take it out on us. I'll be looking for encouraging signs from the team as opposed to a result.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Yeah I fully expect Josh Allen to rebound after that horror show on Monday night. Really just want to see the Defense be competitive - we tend to struggle with the east coast match ups in the early game slot

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

Unfortunately the defense looked like it had stayed in Vegas, no penetration up front and blown coverages in the back field. More surprisingly was the lack of control on the offensive line, which meant the running game never got going and we had nothing after the first drive of the game. The next two games could make or break this season - I can see the likes of Renfrow getting traded before the deadline considering his lack of opportunity.

  • Registered Users Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

I really ant understand why Renfrow is being sidelined, the guy is a fantastic slot receiver and we need all the help we can get, even on offense. There's no real point in stating that the Defense needs to step up, because the quality is not there. There's no easy fix here, we have 1 top player, a few young players with potential and....thats it. We were shown up for the team we really are on Sunday. I hate the Steelers so would love to take them to the cleaners this Sunday but I fear that they will do a job on us!!

Yeah I am very surprised Hunter Renfrow did not have more looks with Jakobi Meyers out. I was surprised we started as well as we did and then it all fell apart. The offensive line didn't really open up anything for Josh Jacobs. Anyway - its in the can and on to Pittsburgh!

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

Another game, another way we find to lose! Whatever about the problems with the defense, I can't understand how the offense is so poor - McDaniels has the players he wants, has the system he wants but we've completely regressed from last season!

  • Registered Users Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Lads, I watched the game on Sunday night and we were awful. This is a team that seems to have no ideas offensively. Its hard to believe that Josh Jacobs led the league last year in rushing. Even with his holdout, I would expect a better effort from him. The line just never seemed to have any success with run blocking. Jimmy G seems blind to Hunter Renfrow, which means if Myers and Adams are not achieving separation he seems to have no options. Play-calling seems stale and unimaginative. Defensively we made Pittsburgh look good, and I shudder to think what Herbert and the Chargers receiving Corps are going to do against us.

If we go down against the Bolts, I expect that Adams will look for a trade (probably Jacobs and Crosby too) and if that happens then McDaniels is a dead man walking.

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

I don't think the problem is with Jacobs as much as it is with the OLine - looking at his stats, he is getting hit one yard before the line of scrimmage, which means he is tackled before he gets going. Last season Jacobs had the best after tackle yards of any running back but if he gets hit just as the ball is handed off he doesn't stand a chance. The OLine has not improved from last year for some reason.

The Renfrow one really is a puzzle. They gave him a lot of money but haven't given him any meaningful targets this year - that's on both McDaniels play calling and Garoppolo not seeing him. We don't have any deep threat as Tre Tucker also isn't getting targets, even if Garoppolo had the arm to hit him and without a run game it means Adams and Myers are getting over used and smashed up. McDaniels came with a reputation of innovative offensive play calling but I haven't seen much evidence this year.

I also can see Adams looking for a trade, his press conference after the Steelers game seemed to hint at that. Not sure if Crosby and Jacobs would demand a trade but a bad loss this week might see McD lose the locker room, which means he will be in the firing line whatever Mark Davis says. I'll be looking at the Chargers game from behind the couch!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

well Jimmy G is out with concussion and Mad Maxx has a knee injury. I hope our DBs can rise to the challenge or it could be ugly early.

Ah well. Another Sunday, another loss. Our O-Line was awful. O'Connell had no time to go through his progressions, not surprised he was intercepted. Thought we got out of jail at the end but wasnt to be.

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

Yes, the O-Line was terrible, Mack was putting pressure on from both sides of the line and nobody seemed able to block him. We beat ourselves again - Crosby had a strip sack on the Chargers first drive cancelled because one of our defensive backs (Long?) decided to line up on the Chargers side of the ball, that cost us 7 points. Tillery cost us another chunk of yardage with a braindead hit on Herbert when he was off the pitch and then Tillery was ejected. The defense stood up in the second half and played the best I've seen from a Raiders defense in years but the offense couldn't closed the game out. McDaniels play calling has to be a problem here, he didn't help O'Connell with some of the calls, especially the last one that was intercepted - why not give 1st and goal to Jacobs to run up the middle rather than call a pass play with a high level of difficulty? We had basically four downs to get the touchdown, no need to panic!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

Bloody hell its a good thing we got something going in the second half on offense - the way Khalil Mack was going in the first half he could have broken the single season sack record in 1 game! Our O-line was bad no question but I was concerned with Aidan O'Connell's pocket awareness - at least one on those fumbles was down to him not sensing the pass rush. Our play calling in the 1st half didnt help him - plays that took too long to develop.

This is going to be a long year...

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

Yep, I agree about O'Connell, he took a while to get to grips with the speed of the game and both fumbles came from holding on to the ball too long. But that's not surprising coming from a minor college into the NFL, no matter how well he played in pre-season. The play calling should have been a lot better for him in the first half. O'Connell got a lot better in the second half, particularly on the last drive until that interception! It is going to be a long season, big game on Monday now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Well at least the fans rage against McDaniels has replaced any talk about Derek Carr!!!! O'Connell is going to make mistakes, there's no way around that. As you guys have said, he's a rookie and what can we expect. But he is a promising QB and I like the way he kept stepping up, despite Mack setting up camp in our backfield. I'm really concerned though about REnfrow becoming anonymous and Adams/Crosby demanding a trade before the deadline. Adams is not going to wait around and I dont think McDaniels has the ability to coach this franchise (I hope I'm wrong)

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

Well that was a relief I suppose! The defense really stepped up last night and I can't remember the last time we got multiple interceptions in a game, good to see that we weren't hampered by the loss of Bennett and Hobbs. The big worry though is still the offense, we still haven't scored 20 points in a game and the OLine looked really porous. We're still not using our wide receivers/tight ends properly and the running game still hasn't got going. However, playing the Patriots next could(!) kick-start the points scoring.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

I do feel the offense has taken a step back this year in all positions we were better last year. We just cant run the ball and it puts too much pressure on a passing game that feels half baked... not having had a full offseason with Jimmy G and Josh Jacobs to get in sync has had a huge impact on our early season form. The Patriots will be a tough nut to crack - I reckon it will go down to the wire just like last year

  • Registered Users Posts: 129 ✭✭InsideEdge

Another game where the defense pulled us out of the mire. The offensive issues keep growing and now Garoppolo could be out for a stretch - do we trust Hoyer or put O'Connell back into the firing line? One positive result of Hoyer coming in was to take the pressure off Jacobs as the Patriots had to keep their safetys deep to defend the deep pass and that gave Jacobs a bit more room to run. McDaniels play-calling during the two minute drill at the end of the first half was awful - no urgency, no belief that we could score a touchdown, no imaginative plays, nothing...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 643 ✭✭✭Kev8360

I don't much trust our O-line so I would guess it will be Hoyer as QB1 with the veteran experience with O'Connell as backup. The way Garoppolo went down and didn't return is worrying. All our wins this year have come against sub .500 teams and not really seeing any improvement on offense to believe we can challenge any of the better teams this year.

  • Registered Users Posts: 835 ✭✭✭Prefab Sprouter

Well as only we know, the Raiders can still win and keep their fans depressed at the same time!!! In one sense, I'm hoping that these wins, where we stumble to victory against teams that are playing as bad as us will help to fix the problems so that we are better prepared when the better teams face us. And funnily enogh, our schedule does not look as bad PROVIDED we can fix those issues. I'll preface this by saying that THIS PROBABLY WONT HAPPEN!!! So Chicago is a winnable, especially if Fields is out (if he is back he wont be 100%). Detroit in Detroit is a loss. Giants at Vegas is winnable, So is Jets in Vegas. Miami at Miami is a loss. And so is the Chiefs. So is the Vikings. Chargers at home is winnable. KC at Arrowhead is a loss. But the Colts is winnable and so is the Broncos at home. So we MIGHT crawl to 9 wins, which would better than I thought we would do. Of course what will actually happen is that we implode and only win 1 more game and that would be Denver at home!!!! It all depends on the Defense being competitive which they seem to be now, and the Offense being better. McDaniels needs to stop calling the plays. End of.
