Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

Did you get to press green to continue though?

Not quite, a different sort of pressure here… and that pressure is obviously telling.

he could comeback indeed but the worry would be the lack of holding his nerve and composure at times, looked a little frazzled.

Yeah Stevens did that but it was on a table with, erm, non-standard pockets, allegedly... like my then hero Jimmy one of the most exciting players to watch in the early 80s. Both had a penchant for the Colombian marching powder too which didn't do either of them any good.

Bill was a great character, there is a rumour that he wrote off the 20 pints per game he had to drink against tax as a business expense 😉 there are worse jobs.

If snookers are required then a miss can't be called.

Wasn't sure about the Kirk Stevens maximum on the Riley table in the 1984 Masters being unofficial. First I heard of it.

Though it is a possibility because, as a non ranker, the Masters was not seen as the second, or even the third or fourth event back then.

It could be confused with the first maximum on the modern tour (post 1969). That was made by John Spencer in the Holstein Pills tournament in Slough in 1979. It wasn't filmed because Union rules meant the ITV cameramen had downed tools for a tea break. That is now not considered to be kosher because of the pocket size used at that tournament.

Breaks of 145 or above at the Crucible are rare enough. Up to this year there had only been 22 of them.

Think there have been 3 this year.

There had been 41 breaks of 142 or above before this year. And big Bill Werbeniuk had two of those. A 142 and a 143.

Even Hendry only made 2 breaks of 142 or above, both his maximums.

Certainly the cloth in the 80s made the big breaks a bit tougher.

The pocket templates haven't changed according to the journalists working backstage there, and I'd trust them to know.

Thorburn was some pith blamed higgins for a refs decision on the famous green incident

Alex Higgins used to beat him mostly

Just watched the 147. Very controlled. Delighted for Selby. He’s a character behind the steely brilliance.

All on their absolute top form over 35 frames and he’s neck and neck with Higgins and Robbie and Williams and Davis and Hendry. Could easily argue he’s the best overall player..

He was kinda right there as well. If I recall he had allowed Alex to use his extension during the match, and then asked Alex to back him up on the call of green ball. Alex wouldn’t back him up. Cliff then said gimme that extension back

He's got the perfect temperament for the game and very rarely lets his emotions get the better of him. I enjoyed the little celebrations afterwards and the interactions with Luca and Brendan as we don't often see that side to him. He's very respectful and honest and none of this showboating or craving attention and just gets on with it which I like. His confidence is sky high at the moment which is great to see considering what he's been through.

There's the two 147s (so far!) this year and Neil Robertson got two 146s in the same match.

Yes couldn't remember if the two 146s were in the Crucible or at least one was in Ponds Forge. So there were three 146s in Sheffield in the last month. And 2 147s. This year is an outlier, but then look at the standard played last night, and the Friday night session between Si and Brecel. A lot of attacking snooker on display at times.

'Only' 84 century breaks though + whatever we get today, compared to 100+ the last few years. Though a lot of that can be put down to a lack of frames played in the second round in particular.

Cloth playing extremely fast this year making bigger breaks easier/more likely.

Neal Foulds has pointed out some along cushion that shouldn't have dropped. And a good few others have mentioned it - Murphy etc.

Even the normally uncontroversial Dennis Taylor pointed out that the cloth leaves the black more open on the break than usual, and the players seem to be finding it harder to get the white behind the baulk colours.

Maybe they need to bring yer man back with the orange powder to slow things down a bit?

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

And yet yesterday there were two slow balls that drifted horribly as they approached the pockets.

    Another maximum on here!

    Scrap that

Seems to have clicked mentally with Brecel, mad how he used to be so flakey for years.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Yeah good for the match, Brecel taking that frame

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,181 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Brecel has been the better player. Selby hasn't really played well apart from the 147. Shaun Murphy was warning in the studio yesterday against Brecel thinking because he was a good few frames ahead at that point that he could push the boat out. Hopefully the 147 and only leading 9-8 by the end last night showed him that he can't and shouldn't.

Great start from Brecel with a century.

Big chance to go 3 clear

  • Registered Users Posts: 55,525 ✭✭✭✭walshb

    Super pot that

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,181 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

    Brecel 11-8 up.

  • Registered Users Posts: 18,704 ✭✭✭✭gormdubhgorm

Playing fantastic, I don't know how Selby is going to rattle him.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Not looking good for Selby so far
