    Hi,

Just creating a thread for discussion of the ongoing competition for Administrative Officer positions which closed on 09/02/2023 and advertised for the following areas:

    1. Human Resources

    2. Business/Finance

    3. Energy, Environment and Climate

    4. Health Policy Analyst

I’ve attached the information booklet for the competition for reference.

I’m scheduled for interview/presentation for the HR stream the week of the 17th April. Does anyone have any tips for the presentation?

I've been called for interview for the Business and Finance stream. Can't say I have any advice for the presentation as this is my first attempt an interview for this role.

Anyone aware roughly how many are being interviewed? I placed 19th in my stream so curious how far down they're interviewing.

Given that there will be specialist questions related to knowledge of different streams, is anyone aware if similar questions came up in the 2022 interviews?

Would be very helpful if anyone here has some examples of what was asked, thanks. For reference I'm in the Business and Finance stream.

I'm interviewing this week for that stream too. I am not a recent graduate at all. My degree was years ago. I'm happy enough with my presentation (I think - never done a presentation in a CS interview before).

I have no idea what type of specialist questions they will ask.

I’m interviewing this week for the HR stream. Regarding the presentation, from what I’ve seen they mainly ask you about the topic you chose, how you researched it, where you looked for information etc.

I have no clue what kind of specialist questions could be ask. But past posts basically just said to focus on the performance indicators for that competency. If I had to guess, I’d say it would be about a time you used your knowledge in the workplace.

I just had my interview today. The interviewers are all very nice and the questions covered all competencies.

One think I wasn’t really expecting was having to give different scenarios for some competencies. But other than that I think it went well

  • Had my interview yesterday, thought the interview board were fair and specialist knowledge questions weren’t too bad. Sounds like results should be out next week, now for the heart in mouth feeling every time the phone makes any form of vibration

    Best of luck 🤞

Have been scheduled for an interview in May on the Finance Stream. Wondering if anyone has had an interview for the finance stream yet? And if they could share their experience, tips or just outline the structure of how things went.

Also I note that PAS used the same numerical/verbal/situational judgement test I took for another post(with DFA - Development Specialist Officer) in order to give me an OOM place for both posts. I was wondering if this interview presentation would have an impact on that stream like stage 1 did? Is anyone else in the same boat?

  • I’d an interview for a different stream. Only advice I can offer on the presentation is to make sure you have the timing down. I found when practicing on my own I was coming in around the 10 minute mark however, on the day I ended up getting through it quicker and finished around the 9 minute mark. The interview was a standard competency based interview but I found they probed my answers and were looking for different situations to the ones I’d provided, not sure if this is a good sign or not, kind of thinking it’s bad because I probably hadn’t answered the competency asked. Still nervously waiting on results. Best of luck though, I thought the interview board were very nice and put me at ease.

Wonder when the panel will get moving? I'm in the top 10. No one has heard anything yet?

  • I’m in the same boat, top 10 as well and no word yet unfortunately

I’m also in the top 10 haha. I hope we hear something soon enough because I think they want people to start around September

I can’t remember if I actually saw it or not. But I’m just assuming it’s around September because the position is specifically targeted towards graduates.

I think one of the requirements was that you’d be graduating by September 2023 for your field

Message from PAS about clearance just came in. This is quick.

  • Great to hear. Are you the HR stream as well ?

I got one for the HR stream, I didnt expect to hear back this soon. Do you think they'd accept a copy of exam results showing I have the required degree as a UCC transcription takes 10-15 working days to be processed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 354 ✭✭Wonderstruck

Would you be able to get a transcript external validation code system or something like that, like how it is in UCD? https://www.ucd.ie/students/studentdesk/documents/onlinedocuments/ something that shows the results aren't doctored? Also congrats! 10 days isnt much in the scheme of things anyway!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 Bitty98

The only other thing I could get it like a statement confirming I did my degree and my result but it could take up to a week to process. Like they want this by Wednesday, they could have given a heads up when they said we passed the interview haha

  • Sent off transcripts for pre-clearance and received a request the following day to send on documents for clearance, which I’ve now sent on. Anyone know how long clearance usually takes ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 Bitty98

That’s very quick, I sent off my transcript yesterday but haven’t heard anything since.

What kind of documents are they looking for if you don’t mind me asking

  • There’s a word document with a few bits to sign, copy of ID, proof of citizenship so birth cert or passport, proof of address, reference details covering last 2 years.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭HungrySeagull

I sent in mine on Friday and they ackowledged that they received it yesterday but haven't had any further contact. The deadline was earlier today so maybe tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 Bitty98

Maybe it depends on our position on the panel? Hopefully they get back soon

Anyone hear back anything further regarding qualifications submitted last week? Ta

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 Bitty98

I got an email on Friday from someone basically just reconfirming they received it and they’d ask for more information about it if required

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭HungrySeagull

Thanks Bitty! We are both in the same boat patiently waiting.

  • Got a request today to sign a consent form for Garda vetting, the clearance process moves fairly slowly anyway

I got that too. I’m not surprised with the pacing, it’s public sector. They’re very slow to do things haha

They just got back to me asking for references. I’m surprised they responded quickly

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6 aqwerty

Seems like the HR stream is moving a lot faster than the Business/Finance stream. I got top 10 and still waiting to hear back. Interested to know if anyone for Business/Finance has heard about vetting?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭HungrySeagull

Hi, I'm in Business/Finance top 10. Sent in the transcript the other week and they acknowledged it and said they would be in touch for further info if required. Haven't heard anything since.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33 Bitty98

I wouldn’t worry too much about this. Public sector positions move very slowly. Just have your references and stuff ready to go when they do ask.

A girl I worked with was waiting an entire year to start a position in the HSE and she was in the HSE anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭HungrySeagull

I was contacted about vetting and reference the other day. Sent off my details so there is movement in the Business stream.

The B/F stream is definitely moving fast as they are in the 90s now for interview. I have an interview for the end of June for B/F stream, was hoping I would be called for climate stream first. If successful at interview, can you decline a B/F stream to wait for a climate stream position?

I've never done an AO competition before, so not sure particularly with this new specialist stream model what is allowed and what's not. I was always of the impression and then told by PAS that if you turn down an offer, you are gone. But that isn't always the case. I competed in an accountant grade II competition before and placed top 10, got offered Dept Justice and turned it down and was told that I would be removed, however 2 months later they offered me another role with AGS which I again turned down. I went for the same competition 2 years ago and the same thing happened, I turned down the original role offer in Dept of Defence and 2 months later was offered Dept of Children, which I also turned down for various reasons. Before anyone comments on how daft that sounds................I know it seems quite silly to turn down a role 4 times, but some strategic moves not of my making were at play in the dept I was in at the time and an opportunity developed for something quite different where I am now.

To answer your question specifically, I think it depends on the Competition, but in my experience as outlined above, a refusal does not always mean the end of the road.

I'm currently on this B/F panel aswell and have placed in the top 10. I was hoping things would take longer to be honest and that the panel would be in existence for a few years as I really enjoy what I'm at now but I have also received another job offer for a set period I want to pursue and then move into a Finance/Economics policy AO role (hopefully in an area I'm interested in) afterwards. It's a good place to be I guess, but I can see myself having a tough decision to make soon I would imagine considering how quick things have tipped along up to now.

Congrats on the job offer. Are most of the business/finance stream positions in the Department of Finance? What Department is hiring you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭HungrySeagull

I haven't heard anything back yet but I imagine Finance, DPER or DETE.
