just so adept at getting into pole position to win and just not having the composure/decision making to get it done. We might still but we need to stop finding fielders with good shots bringing dot balls and need to stop loosing wickets.

3 off that over, last single a missfield.

That's exactly it. The fielder at point I imagine has been changed with sore hands because the ball has gone to him so many times today. This team find it so hard to get over the line.

Imploding, too cautious at one stage and let the run rate rise that bit. Rate we'd do handily enough but not under pressure.

Game pretty much done now. No boundary for 7 overs at the key point in the game.

Tector should have been milking it for one and twos and they would have comfortably got home.

don’t like this Bangladesh team, been up to all sorts of gamesmanship this series…. Trainers forever running on and off the field without reason.

we need to hit boundaries but this pair haven’t been told…. Actually Adair with a 4, need more.

Serious lack of bottle in this team. They've completely thrown away two wins. That was almost unlosable at 223/3 yet they've lost fairly meekly in the end.

Even if they had the talent they don't have the mentality side if it. Their rare wins are always straight forward wins, they lose every tight game. That's not luck that's a lack of bottle. Chokers...

It's happening far too often that they lose tight matches. I'm sick of either the bowling failing to defend a good total like on Friday or the batters failing to reach a modest total after a good bowling performance. It's happening far too often.

No they did all the hard work, put themselves in a winning position. Then crapped themselves. Rabbits in headlights under any pressure. Batting, bowling and fielding all fall apart under pressure

Yeah, but we can see that whilst we have a decent batting lineup, it's starts struggling when they need to score more than a run a ball. We can canter along sometimes batting first but put us batting second recently and the heads go awry. Stirling & Balbirnie needed to build a stand alright but also to have driven down the asking rate a bit. Stirling needed to be hitting a few more fours, don't think running hard is really his thing.

We're just not there yet. Competitive against lesser sides, or even the big nations if they drop a big player or 3. The killer instinct, putting the game to bed mentality.

Doheny is a big worry at the top of the order, a young guy but he isn’t performing in T20 or 50 over cricket. I remember that very good 84 he made against Zimbabwe but he’s come nowhere near following it up, he’s only made that single half century in his 12 limited overs appearances …. Averages in the 20’s with one score of 50 or over….. but true to Irelands selection policies I’m sure he’s about 8 - 10 more matches of scoring not many runs before he’s jettisoned.

our last 6 wickets just contributed 32 runs…

The rate was less than 6 when Tector got out. That should be a doddle. They panicked when he went. The thought of winning was too much. It happens all the time, they haven't the winning mentality.

I genuinely think they should start playing regularly against the associates again. Winning is a habit no matter who you beat.

Away from the national side, the Inter Pro resumes today with 6 matches over the next 10 days between Leinster, Munster, North West and Northern Knights.

Places in the senior side are definitely up for grabs with just a month to go until the Cricket World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe.

England squad for the Ireland game announced. Full strength I would say with Bairstow now back from injury. Wood and Woakes in it too. There is some concerns over Anderson but he’s named.

Top 3 qualify in each group for the super six stage with points carried over. They play 3 more matches in the super six stage against teams from the opposite group and the top two qualify for the World Cup and then play in a final.

Ireland squad for the World Cup Qualifiers has been named:

Ireland: Andrew Balbirnie (c), Mark Adair, Curtis Campher, Gareth Delany, George Dockrell, Graham Hume, Josh Little, Andy McBrine, Barry McCarthy, PJ Moor, Paul Stirling, Harry Tector, Lorcan Tucker, Ben White, Craig Young.

So from the ODI squad against Bangladesh, Stephen Doheny loses his place after a run of poor scores and is replaced by PJ Moor. Barry McCarthy replaces Fionn Hand and Ben White gets added as a reserve spin option.

The Inter-pro competition has been going full steam in the past week and this selection has it's problems. PJ Moor has been batting at 5 for Munster Reds and going by the squad seems likely to open. He didn't impress in the test team in Sri Lanka, but did see Munster over the line last week with a 69 not out. Murray Commins hit a century on Monday opening, and would surely have been a better fit. Perhaps they see Balbirnie jumping up to open with Stirling, but it's a problem that they still haven't solved.

Big issues as well with the World Cup Qualifier. Netherlands you may remember got trashed by England last year in an ODI series because they couldn't release players from their English counties and the same thing has happened again for them with up to 6 county players unavailable to leave.

Scotland who are in our group are without Michael Jones, Brad Wheal and Josh Davey for the same reasons as the Dutch. Not on in 2023.

Doheny had to be dropped…..Fionn Hand while remembered for the brilliant delivery that got Ben Stokes in the T20 World Cup….. hasn’t done much else in an Ireland shirt.

So the Tour match against Essex has started today.

A reminder of the squad:

Matthew Foster replaced Conor Olphert who had to withdraw due to injury.

So Ireland are bowling and Essex are 100-3 at lunch. Campher, Dockrell, Adair and Foster are all in the Essex side, so it's a bit of a strange one. Ireland's bowling attack has been a bit limited but ok. Mayes has looked decent.

Tucker falls 3 short of his century with Dockrell taking the wicket which in itself is weird. 97 from 102… deserved a century. McBrine 44* from 44 including a heap of boundaries

303/6…. hopefully we keep plugging away and chase down the Essex score….40 runs behind, 4 wickets remaining.

419 all out, entertaining by the Irish batsmen. Combated a good attack and some iffy umpiring…. One of our batmen given out initially lbw that jagged back about 8 inches off the bat onto the pad, poor. A good number of overs left, weather set good so an outside chance of a result.

A ten wicket win for Ireland. Some going. Both openers unbeaten with a ton for each in the second innings to get to 232/0 and secure the win. Hopefully the preparation will stand to them ahead of the test in Lords later next week.

Impressive partnership but then you remember half the bowlers were our own. Too bad it wasn’t a full strength Essex. Against Cook, Porter and Harmer would have been a different story and much better preparation for Thursday.

I had a mad urge to go to the game in Lord's on Thursday. €200 for in-and-out flights on Thurs, £70 for a ticket. Add in transport, food, drinks etc you won't see any change from €350 or so.

Still wildly tempted, as there is NOWHERE like Lord's for watching cricket. But don't think I can justify the funds, not to mention the exhaustion the next day.

Weather is forecasted to be dry for the whole test. That’s the good news, we should have no interruptions.

quite breezy, overcast so with it being Lords, we shall see much swing most likely, gonna be humid too.

that slope and swinging conditions have done for many a batsman not experienced at Lords…

Looking forward to it. Hopefully we hold our own.

Ireland side tomorrow is likely to be:

1 James McCollum, 2 PJ Moor, 3 Andy Balbirnie (capt), 4 Harry Tector, 5 Paul Stirling, 6 Lorcan Tucker (wk), 7 Curtis Campher, 8 Andy McBrine, 9 Mark Adair, 10 Graham Hume, 11 Craig Young.

In all honesty, it's going to be difficult for Ireland to make this game competitive. I think their only hope is that England's all-aggressive Bazball style of cricket, throws away some wickets and keeps Ireland in the game. Our bowling hasn't looked good though when the opposition has been all-out-attack and you do fear a hammering.

On the batting side, that middle will be key for us to get a respectable score. Tector, Stirling and Tucker have been in very good form over the past international year and hopefully the top 3 can last long enough to make batting a bit easier when they get in.

Still great for this Irish team to play another test match at Lords. We never know when they will play test cricket again as it all seems very haphazard on the scheduling side of things.

Fionn Hand must have some serious dirt on the selectors, even with a low talent base he is nowhere near the standard required. Young and Mayes are both much better bowlers. There's probably 6/7 that should be ahead of him. This is not a pick based on any cricketing performance. I've never seen a more scattered bunch of selectors!

15/1 after 5. Moor gone lbw played all around a very full and straight delivery that didn’t swing did nothing off the pitch. Should have either blocked it or played it with a straight bat down the pitch…

not a good shot at all.

19/2… Balbernie goes for a duck… again bad batting more than good bowling…. Broad full and straight just outside off. Balbernie hangs the bat, offers his edge and Broad obliges. Two down ok, but absolutely two terrible shots… a number 11 would get the ‘look’ going up the stairs having played either.

19/3 😵‍💫 Tector with another disaster of an effort… 🙄. Rank shot… has to have know a fielder is there..they must have stopped off at the Devon Malcolm school of batting.

The coach needs to have a word in their ears and remind them it's a 4 day match :)

Starting to look a bit thin in the rest of the batting, Campher can hang around and maybe McBrine. Curtains after that.
