Audi Northern Ireland won't allow me to purchase car for export to Ireland

I spotted a 3 year old Audi E-Tron in Agnew Audi dealers in Northern Ireland. Anyway, they said they can't cover the 12 month warranty as the car will now be outside their jurisdiction, and won't be covered under warranty. Guy pretty much told me he can't sell me or anyone from Ireland(Republic) a used car because of honoring warranty. This makes no sense. Anyone hear about this at all?

It's called protectionism. Audi protecting their dealers in the Republic by not having their UK/NI dealers competing with them. Some other manufacturers have been doing the same for years.

could also not want to sell down south as they wont get service / repair work from you and there is a shortage of used cars up North as new car market so small.

    that is most likely reason

Could you not buy it without the warranty.

Can you consider buying the car and doing the reregistration yourself and getting an independent warranty?

Or indeed purchase in a private sale.

It's just an excuse not to sell a car outside your own back yard

VW/Audi give a two year European warranty, with a third year covered by the national VAG company covering the third year.

So if you bought a VAG car in NI, you just take it back to NI in the third year if a warranty issue arises.

It has been that way for years - pre-Brexit.

I told you why they won't . They want the aftersales business that comes with selling locally

Are they really refusing to sell a used car to a southern buyer so that they can sell servicing on a 3 year old car locally? Surely they would be more interest in selling a service pack with a new car if aftersales was the issue. Warranty doesn't make much difference either because if you can get the car up to the Audi dealer in the North then it will be covered by the Audi warranty the same as if someone local bought it. (I've had personal experience of this with a VW in the past).

As I said Audi just doesn't want an Audi NI/UK dealer selling to a southern buyer because it takes a sale away from a southern Audi dealer. They are protecting their southern Irish dealers.

Sounds a bit like cartelism, of which car dealers on the island of Ireland have been previously guilty of.

I dont agree if they sell to a local NI buyer - they will see that car back for servicing / repairs and possibly have a customer for life ( there are only x2 Audi dealers up North - both Agnew also )

It sounds like illegal anti-competitive activity.

It's not cartellism or anything else. A car dealer has a contract with its manufacturer/s to support the products, sales and after-sales of that manufacturer in the territory which they operate.

If Audi AG doesn't want Audi UK market dealers supplying product to affect the distribution of Audi Ireland dealers, they are well within their rights to prevent it.

The UK isn't under EU consumer law anymore, Audi UK can do what it likes.

Just wondering if you had to register, tax or insure the car before bringing it down south?

I wonder would the VRT process be tricky if the car was registered in your name up north also?

You cannot register a car up in the North if you are not a NI resident.

    Hi,

Just an FYI , I bought a nearly new Passat in the UK in 2017 (pre brexit). Frank Keane honoured the the full 3 year warranty on the car with no issues. I had one or two warranty related claims in year 3 that were fixed in year 3 under warranty. At the time the Irish cars only came with 2 years warranty.

Yep. But what is needed to register the car? Just an address to send the v5 out to?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,411 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I'm going back about 9 or 10 years ago, had a UK imported Passat CC that needed expensive warranty work done in year 3 but VW Ireland would only contribute some goodwill and wanted €1500 from me due to the 3rd year being VW UK warranty only. Managed to bring it to the VW dealer in Belfast where VW UK covered the entire cost.

Not sure to be honest but if your putting it in a friends NI address then you might as well put it in their name too. Having it in your name might just invite awkward questions at VRT time or they may simply not give a damn who's name is on the V5 as long as the paperwork is proper and VRT is paid. Some of these NI/UK dealers however have been known to ask that the buyer produce a NI/UK licence before selling the car to them if they suspect you are from the south.

Is this not the same with mercedes uk - its been going on years .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,760 ✭✭✭goochy

People are not getting it . Main dealers want to sell locally to get the other business associated with selling a car . You export a car and then unlikely to see buyer ever again . Used car dealers aren't bothered about any of that

in this case it was a UK Jaguar dealer refusing to sell me an A7. Got the friend to put his name on the logbook (I paid dealer) and sell to me the next day.
