There are already four ads on each page, plus a fifth small banner ad on the bottom of each page. This was just about tolerable until they changed it in the last few days and now it is almost unusable

I wonder do the advertisers know how their adds are being used or are they just told there is alot of traffic to your site so we that you pay are doing a good job.

The bottom picture is from using brave browsers for this site and no adds.

Gave in and downloaded Opera browser for my mobile. Like a step back to 2000 but ads are gone. It was that or leave the site.

Don't forget to use the dark appearance in the options as well

    Can ask why dark appearance.?

Also while trying to post this I got this adds in the way to post.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,491 ✭✭✭sioda

I find the white awful harsh to look at dark mode much easier especially at night

That fcuking add that comes up from the bottom of the page is a bollox of a job, can't even get rid of it fully

  • Registered Users Posts: 309 ✭✭RockOrBog

The ads are a joke there will be nobody left here soon, it's a small loss at this stage really imo.

Its a while coming tbh, the moderation and general backwards attitude have come home to roost.

Starting to get uncomfortable with the ads now. They are getting progressively more intrusive.

  • Registered Users Posts: 824 ✭✭✭HotSwap

Can I just pay to have them removed? How much would it cost? Can you calculate how much ad revenue my account has generated? I’d be happy to pay that much at least and perhaps add a bit more.

That sort of thing is basically impossible with the new system.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,820 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

We did have that before. Iirc it was €50 per year for membership which gave you no ads, and access to forums like sex and sexuality. All mods were full members as a perk.

Seems to be worse for me today… im getting those fake Independent.ie adverts now selling crypto scams.

Im sure that newspaper would be interested in knowing boards.ie is faking their ip.

    “Roll it back”

Bottom and not popping up the screen for me any more, has changed in the last hour.

Edit: back again, but less frequent than the every page load they had been recently.

Edit 2: back to the same crap, every page load.

Don't let the door hit you on the way out so.

Lads, is there no way these ads could be sorted soon? Why the delay?

It's completely ruining the image of the website. When I browse it on my phone it's like I'm trying to access a Warez site from the late 90s with all the huge ads and dodgy almost porno images plastered all over the place.

Any update on this @Boards.ie: Mike ? its been nearly 2 days since you posted.

  • Registered Users Posts: 11,990 ✭✭✭✭Exclamation Marc

Not only are the advertisements taking up over 95% of the space where posts are, what is that actual point of that ad at the bottom? Here's a picture of a car... And it's not the first one...

  • Registered Users Posts: 40,427 ✭✭✭✭ohnonotgmail

You will notice that the right hand side of the ad is cut off. not only is the ad taking up half screen it isn't even properly formatted properly. An omnishambles you might say.

The problem is boards now are at the mercy of the various companies they have farmed the site out to, Vanilla for any forum issues, snigel for advertising and have no real way to make any direct changes. Its a total disaster of an idea and neither should have ever happened but here we are.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,428 ✭✭✭Tork

Are all these very intrusive ads really the only way to keep boards afloat? They are ruining the experience for the people who haven't yet succumbed to an adblocker. I think it'd be helpful at this point to open up a thread where users and yourself/Odhran discuss other ways to keep the money coming in.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,461 ✭✭✭HBC08

Thanks for at least coming on to communicate stuff.I think it really riles people up when they ate left in the dark.

However your post is at odds with the reality of anybody on here's interaction with the ad provider.

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,799 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

40% of the reading space in the UI (that is, when that reading space is not held up with an in-line ad within a thread then it's 95%) on iOS/Safari taken up by an advert that keeps popping up even if you hit X and you can't fully X it out, the X just stays there grayed out as if to say '**** you, navigate somewhere else.'

Then after a few seconds it refreshes and pops back up again.

    Great motivator for adblockers.

Thanks to whoever advised to use the brave browser, such a relief to just open boards and be able to read something without any hassle

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,325 ✭✭✭Deub

With the new big ads, the ad revenue might even go down because who is going to click on the ads when you only see a picture and have no idea what it is about.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,861 ✭✭✭TheRona

Yeah, best option is just go to boards on Brave browser on Android. Then use the menu at bottom right to add to home screen, then you'll have an icon that will launch you straight into ads-free boards.

Still really weird that they haven't just disabled the ads until they fix them.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,632 ✭✭✭✭28064212

They don't even have to disable them. Just revert to the configuration before the full page pop-up ads started three weeks ago.

    • In 414 days, this discussion had 300 posts, leading up to 2023-04-28, which was when the first post about the full page pop-up ads was made (and most of the complaints in those posts related to the content of ads, rather than the positioning)
    • In the 21 days since then, there have been 148 posts, almost all compaints about the positioning

The changes should have been rolled back within a couple of days at most of the full page ads. That it's already been three weeks, gotten worse, and we're heading into another weekend with no improvement, just goes to show that there's effectively no-one at the helm. That's not a dig at Mike, they've clearly been handed an Uno deck and told to lay out a game of solitaire. It's management that are the problem.

In hindsight, it's pretty clear what the business plan was when Boards was most recently purchased: Boards has decent revenue levels, but high operating costs - get the costs down (hello Vanilla), and we can keep the revenue. It's not an uncommon business plan, but in Boards' case, they completely ignored the underlying product. Boards exists almost entirely on the goodwill of its users. You try to cut off the bits of Boards that aren't convenient, you risk losing the goodwill, and suddenly you're "just another" social media site, and a small Irish site can't meaningfully compete with the giants.

Boards was monetizable, but it required significant investment to actually capitalise on its strengths, grow it further (or at least back to its old levels), while keeping costs under control and then slowly reducing them. Coming in and wielding the axe was never going to work

Boardsie Enhancement Suite - a browser extension to make using Boards on desktop a better experience (includes full-width display, keyboard shortcuts, dark mode, and more). Now available through your browser's extension store.

I really hate these new ads. I will quit the site if it’s not sorted.

  • My adblocker on my iPhone is working perfectly to block all adverts, but I momentarily forgot about it when trying to make a payment on another site and got frustrated at the option being blocked, until I remembered the adblocker. Very easy to activate and deactivate but it inevitably causes moments of frustration when I’m off guard.

Rich Text Editor. To edit a paragraph's style, hit tab to get to the paragraph menu. From there you will be able to pick one style. Nothing defaults to paragraph. An inline formatting menu will show up when you select text. Hit tab to get into that menu. Some elements, such as rich link embeds, images, loading indicators, and error messages may get inserted into the editor. You may navigate to these using the arrow keys inside of the editor and delete them with the delete or backspace key.
