What next for Ryan Tubridy?

So we are finally at the end of an era ... the Ryan Tubridy weekend chat show era .... for near 20 years he has reigned supreme over our weekends first as host of Tubridy Tonight and then as the 3rd regular Late Late Show host ... he now says he is tired of being 'public property' ... but I have a hunch we have not seen the last of the Tubbers man .... he could:

.... be the next Eurovision host for Ireland?

.... the maker of the 'ultimate JFK documentary'?

.... the host of a new chatshow featuring country music guests and ..... Imelda May!!

.... the host of a new silly gameshow?

.... the host of a book review show?

Speaking of books .... he definitely will write another one .... a sort of a Late Late Show memoir running through the 'highlights' of the 2009-2023 era ...

Some are glad to see the back of him ... some will miss him .... but never fear Tubridy will be just changing roles and not abandoning us completely .... What the 'great man' will end up doing could be one or more of above ... but you never know he could surprise us all and do something completely different ... like Tubridy the actor ... too bad season 3 of Kin is already filmed .... Tubridy playing a money laundering chat show host could have great potential ....

I'd say some class of a historic travel show like Michael Portillo's Railroad Journeys on BBC.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 87,601 ✭✭✭✭JP Liz V1

    A few political documentaries maybe

He still has his radio show

I imagine him as a guest even on LLS or another Irish talk show

Probably some travel show that costs millions to produce and only a small percentage watch it .

  • Registered Users Posts: 277 ✭✭Guildenstern

If he did a travel show, they'd be spending most time editing out the bits on film where they keep bumping into other travel shows. Hasn't the concept been done to death?

A show where Tubs talks about himself and how amazing he is, “Humblebragging with Ryan Tubridy”.

Shot solely from Ryan’s curated list of “places I’d like to visit on the taxpayer’s dime” we open on Episode 1 to join Tubs as he walks through Martha’s Vineyard pining for Teddy’s 99s and listen as he talks about his rise from poverty into the global superstar he is today - with no help or favour from anyone along the way. It was all thanks to his own incredible talents and hard work.

Ryan talks about how his tough life back in Eire where he sometimes put in arduous 10 hour weeks. He talks about his yearning for privacy and bemoans the fact that nowhere in the world is he free from the adulation and mobs of adoring fans….even in New England. It is he acknowledges, a cross he must bear for being so amazing.

He talks of how he understands Harry and Meghan’s plight, and “casually” mentions that he met Meghan once. Theirs are lives so difficult and not in any way privileged that only they could understand just how hard it is to be rich beyond most people’s imagination for doing SFA and still complain about it. Likewise they share a fondness for slight exaggeration when it comes to encounters with the public or paparazzi. H&M had an almost catastrophic taxi ride, Ryan was accosted by two burly 20 something muscle bound thugs….who were revealed to be barely teenagers in Tik Tok but we don’t talk about that.

Later Ryan reveals for the first time that he likes books, though apart from Anthony Horowitz’s work the self-professed bookworm struggles to name a single author, except Enid Blyton and Joe Duffy.Ryan also talks about how no book was ever read or sold in Ireland before he started talking about them as filler in his show.

Woke Ryan then tells us of his plans to give back, including one (singular) talk he promises to give to underprivileged teenage boys in Dublin. He talks of his dream to set up “The Ryan Tubridy and JFK Good Egg Finishing School for messers” and starts the fundraising off with a crisp €5 note of his own. He talks openly of his disappointment that Lottie Ryan didn’t get the LL gig, but quips “her time will come, if the BBC or NBC don’t grab her first”, and says that “Ireland must do better” when it comes to looking after the young…..of his friends and colleagues in RTE.

Episode 1 closes with Ryan in front of an open fire, drinking some tea with an imported slice of plain cake, and shedding a tear for the children of Ireland for whom Christmas will be cancelled this year as he’s not hosting the Toy Show. Ryan is briefly interrupted by a producer who informs him that Christmas will not actually be cancelled in Eire, and we close with a close up of a dumbfounded and puzzled Tubs staring into the fire.

Is there any doubt that he covets doing something with the BBC? Maybe more Summer fillings-in, maybe a documentary on the Irish.

This is exactly the show that Tubridy wants RTE to pay for him....

It is a superb bit of satire that encapsulates the spirit of the free loading, self entitled and grossly overindulged Tubridy....

Idea for a program. Root Finder with Ryan Turbridy. In this series Ryan travels far and wide to talk to global superstars about their Irish Roots and what it means to them, how when growing up that their parents would oft remember the old crountry and sing songs and ballads. Uk rooters will include the likes of Steve Coogan (Sligo) the Gallagher brothers Mayo and Oasis) and Nathen Carter (Birmingham). From across the pond and based in some of the most expensive hotels the RTE crew will get to interview funny man Will Ferrel (Longford), Brendan O Carroll (Miami) and presidental duo Obama and Biden (Offaly and Mayo). In an twist of fate the presenter will bring the guest back to their roots and stand on that old conerstone which are the rimnents of their ancesters struggles and perseverance. These one hour specials to be aired at 930 Rte 2 Friday nights.

A travel program. First episode St. Petersburg and Moscow. Tubs samples the "real" Russia and attempts to understand why some Russians are such warmongering, imperialist basturds.

Unfortunately, an RTE staffer accidentally leaves some cocaine inside Tubridy's tweed jacket pocket. Tubridy is accosted by sniffer dogs at Moscow airport, detained and questioned for four days, denied a translator and legal advice and is then shipped off to a Siberian gulag where he is put in a cell with a large tattooed man known as Oleg "The Gentle"

Surely he'll go down the podcast route and interview guests that way. It'll be a who's who of Irish celebrities, you know the ones, the ones doing the circuit. Podcasters interviewing podcasters and the like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I have no doubt RTE will find some sort of tv programme for him in the near future.

Otherwise they will be paying him crazy money for an hour of waffle on the radio every morning.

Talking of money, I wonder how much of a pay cut he'll have to take once he stops doing the LLS.

I would say he will run for the presidency once Micheal D Higgens term is up as Tubridy would just love all that pampering.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

I have a feeling Tubridy left the LLS for some reason ... he has an ulterior motive ... a plan ... the presidency is being mentioned and would not surprise me at all should he go ... afterall the Andrews side of his family have been prominent politicians in Fianna Fail and Sinn Fein .... 2025 sees both a presidential and general election .... suppose FF and SF go into coalition?? ... their agreed president? .... Ryan Tubridy !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,025 ✭✭✭Hyperbollix

Much stranger things have happened. So many vapid, clueless non entities go for the presidency every time, he would fit right in in that field.

A lower budget show would be more appropriate where he has to travel from Howth to Greystones on the DART and see what responses he gets from the public along the way.

We'll see how good his agent actually is now. Trying to find him a new job.

Like he tried on BBC R2 when Graham was in holidays a couple of times? The listeners hated him.

He should just stick up the odd podcast and test the waters. If it doesn't work out, buy a nice villa in some sleepy little town in Portugal and enjoy his millions.

He always said he would love to live a quiet life in Connemara.

He might get the opportunity sooner than he thought he would.

jail for tax evasion & fraud Id hope !

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,042 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

I honestly don't think he is guilty of either, so he's safe from that.

Tax avoidance perhaps, but that's not illegal.

If fraud did occur, I'd say more chance it was by NKM or rte employees.

As for what's next for Tubs, going to predict he will show us some tears this week. Just a few, or if not, definite signs of getting emotional.

He'll be well coached in how to act. And a few tears or being overcome with emotion might just be enough to get a certain amount of forgiveness from a lot of the public. To try to save his career, cos he is in a bad place at present, coming to the committee and acting Johnny Big Bollix ain't going to cut it.

Plus he'll offer to pay a large sum to charity. Maybe not the full 345k, but maybe 100k.

  • I’d be extremely surprised if he doesn’t pull out the tears card. “Never for one moment could I have anticipated this turn of events, it has had a profound effect on my family…”

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 164 ✭✭Terrier2023

Thats the problem with us Irish we are too forgiving if i funnelled away 350K you can bet i'd get jail time tax evasion is just that a crime against us tax payers. Never liked the scrawny bollox lovely to see him squirming. Gay Byrnes money was robbed by his accountant so his lecgacy is not tarnished but Tuibs made sure to get all his money and his legacy is fraudulant statements to the irish public on taking a pay cut and funnelling it through bogus consultant fees. Karma

I saw on a news article that “someone close” to him and the agent said he had filled in for “several big names” in the U.K. and that the “audience loved him” and no one cares what happens in Ireland.

This confused me until I read your post, which makes more sense.

Did Norton recommend him to his bosses as a temporary replacement during holidays? Clever - pick a guy who has no chance of robbing your job while you are away,

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,416 ✭✭✭Zico

If he finds work he'll get paid what someone is willing to pay him.

As an entertainer he's not going to get much here so he'll have to follow through on his threat to find work elsewhere.

    Good luck to him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 25,833 ✭✭✭✭Strumms

I don’t genuinely think that he has the sort of personality that would go down well in the UK… they love that OTT upbeat sort of Chris Moyles, Chris Evans sort of matey personable personality, I don’t think he has that... The LLS with him is very scripted and formulaic.. his humour is anecdotal, he has no great wit. He offers little to the audience himself he is just a facilitator and interviewer…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,912 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

If Noel Kelly and Ryan Tubridy can get 500k a year from Bauer Media or the BBC or Gobal who been taking on quiet a few of the BBC presenters then more power to them.

He doesn't have the name value or gravitas to walk into a top job in the UK so will he be willing to start somewhere on a middle rung of UK talent who won't want him there.

More than like he will end up one of the Bauer stations in Ireland making very good money but nowhere near what he was making at the national broadcaster.

Or maybe he will go off and write another JFK book and try and break America and take Donie's spot at CNN.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,977 ✭✭✭Radio5

I didn't see much of the Committee hearings yesterday, but it seems to me that he was trying to do a balancing act, between saying 'it's all RTE's fault & look the 'untruths' they published about me' versus 'I might be out of my radio job by Friday but please please keep me on Mr Bakhurst' . Time will tell if it works.
