Looks like he's given up the ghost, I can't see him anywhere near the front anymore.

edit...yeah he's gone from the main group so looks like he's going to soldier slowly through this one for the rest of the day. Pinot is in the attack too which is bad news for Healy!

He’s in the 3rd or 4th group. Pinot’s jersey to lose now IMO

Looks goosed. Can't have been feeling great.

    This is carnage already

Kelly not happy with Healy's tactics at all there...

I think it's just that he has burned all of his matches. He was attacking non-stop before the climb.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,611 ✭✭✭happytramp

Kind of mad when you think about it....It's the equivalent of the pink jersey wearer repeatedly attacking on the flat only to be dropped by the entire peloton on the first climb and losing the giro.

Although he'd been saying he hadn't been feeling great the last few days and possibly felt getting in a break was his only chance.

Oh look. Zana has left Eddie on his tod in the GC group. Again.

40 KOM points for Pinot. Ben Healy still in the lead by 10 points. Long way to go to the next Cat. 1 climb.

Anyone see if Ben is still in the Maglia Rosa group or dropped completely?

Went out the back at the start of the first climb.

He’s not a climber. His only chance was to attack and get ahead of the climbers. He tried and it didn’t work. But he wasn’t going to be able to hang on with these either way

Set up for a good race later btw. Looking forward to the final 30km

Ben is a climber ...maybe not high mountains but not sure as he hasnt targeted them but he can climb very well. Remember he has been riding flat out for several months now

I think he is a potential GC rider as he has a v good TT but he is better riding as he does now and can go for GC later

He wasnt second to Pog for no reason

The classics are a very different type of climbing though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,263 ✭✭✭✭Dodge

He’s a climber in the way MVDP is a climber. Big engine, lots of power, can go very well on lots of different terrain

But when the long steep mountains come in, he’s not there yet. Not even close IMO. If you mention the classics, the steepest one is Flèche and he wasn’t in the top 20.

I’m not saying he can’t develop into one but he’s already one of the best attacking riders in the peleton. Not being able to do everything at 22 is no shame. Pog and Remco are freaks

Ben Healy is a very light weight and thus can climb places where MVdP cant really shine

Plus climbing is climbing and as I said hasn't tested himself in form yet in High Mountains but see no reason why he cant shine there

Climbing is not climbing in the way you put it.

GT and classics climbs are different in the sense that one is endurance and the other explosive bursts. Ya he can probably climb better than VdP but he isn't exactly a world beater at GT climbs. Healy is probably closer to being a poor man's Van Aert which is no insult at all.

Italy is looking might fine today 😎

Worth noting that Pinot will move up in GC today more than likely meaning he won't be allowed in the break tomorrow so if Healy is up for it then he could still get some points tomorrow but as has been said he is not a steady pace climber (yet) so it might be too much. I also think he looks 3 weeks tired rather than just tired from the early effort today.

Don't know if it's the heat today but watching Hugh Carthy in that EF kit struggling to stay in the GC group reminds me of Wibbly Wobbly Wonders 😁

    Almeida dropped. Blimey.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,378 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

    Eddie doing fantastic

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,648 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

Eddie starting to struggle here now, lost the wheel and can’t get back on

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,378 ✭✭✭✭dastardly00

Sepp Kuss is on one of his very good days, in which he's probably the best climber in the race

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,648 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

Almeida’s after closing that gap massively now with the descent, Eddie’s a bit further back after jamming the brakes

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,648 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

    Pinot has to be devastated
