Chefs kiss to the season seeing Peterborough choke from four nil up.

Plenty of grudge matches next season. No love lost between, Cambridge, Northampton, Stevenage, Oxford and Peterborough. All relatively close to each other. Lots of wannabe hooligans turn out for some of those fixtures, almost (but only almost) a shame Milton Keynes went down or they would have completed the set.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

I don't think I can remember a Championship play-off featuring two teams that I'd be delighted to go up. No yo-yo team or anything like that.

Coventry- were a solid Premier League outfit when I first started watching football, have gone through awful financial turmoil since but seem to have recovered. The odd Irish player over the years. Under-rated city from what I have been told, and historically significant.

Luton- old-school ground. On the rise the last few seasons. Had it's share of financial difficulties too. Just missed out on the PL gravy train when relegated in the last First Division season so be great to see another newcomer.

    Game on....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,508 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Crinklewood

Luton captain Tom Lockyertaken off.....seemed to fall / collapse.

    Replays didn't look nice

    Was conscious leaving pitch

Very good goal from Luton there.

    0-1

    Excellent assist and finish.

Luton seem well on top here.

Itll be amazing if Kenilworth Road is in the premier league

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,568 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

If games were won in the first 45, Luton would be in the PL next season, they’ve been superb this half. Coventry haven’t done anything.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,079 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Not the size but it's a god awful stadium, in a horrible part of a horrible town.

They reckon they'll have to spend 10 million to get shot of the "executive boxes" portacabin stand which has no character whatsoever and upgrade their floodlights.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

No character....would fit in with the pl so. Be great to see it happen, fans right at the pitchside.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,079 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

It'll only be in the short term anyway. If they do go up, they'll be moving to a new stadium in a year or three.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,295 ✭✭✭✭ctrl-alt-delete

Great goal from Coventry to level it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Is a stadium in the plans? Or would they even commit if not in pl?

Great goal there. Much deserved too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,079 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Yeah Coventry the better team so far 2nd half. Luton have said they'll be in a new stadium by 2026 regardless of league apparently, according to BBC Look East the other day.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

    Probably needed in fairness.

Coventry winning would be a great throwback to collecting the stickers in the 90s...way too often the shiny would be the Coventry crest

Two throwback teams, wouldn't begrudge either of them. Both been through hardships of one sort or another.

Father in law is a Luton Town supporter, my Mrs and the rest of her family are West Ham supporters, so I want Luton to go through for the familial Derby’s next year 😂

luton promoted to PL for 1st time in their history. 6-5 on peno's

Always feels extra unfair when it goes to sudden death. That is gutting for Coventry.

Mpanzu joined Luton when they were in the Conference in 2014 and will now be playing in the Premier League next season.

A playoff final between a club who were non league 11 years ago versus one that was in the fourth tier 5 years ago. It’s a great thing about English club football that other European major leagues don’t see at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,495 ✭✭✭✭Mushy

Both got promoted from League 2 in 2018, some story. Should've just cancelled penalties and relegate an extra team

to be fair Luton did finish 10 points ahead in third place, so over the course of the league I think they deserved it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,612 ✭✭✭✭cj maxx

Sadly I think several of the team which have won promotion won't see game time , such is the new money they've earned expect they will bring a raft of new players in.

Coventry will have a long way back depending on what business they do and getting over it. There's a decent list of teams who lose the playoff and dangle near relegation.

Hamer, Gyokeres will go and McNally, Panzo, Doyle and the two young wing backs will go back to their parent clubs. Huge losses.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,079 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

They'll be severely hamstrung by not owning their ground, hope Ashley gives them some kind of decent deal (though I think we all know he won't)

Don't know about this tbh, the Italian system has a lot of playoffs with some former Serie A teams who end up in Serie C (usually through financial issues) trying to get back up and much traditionally smaller clubs who are better run. For example one of the promotion semi finals to Serie A is between Bari who were in Serie D in 2018 and Sudtirol who are having their first season in Serie B this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,328 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

Serie C is the third tier. Luton have got up from the 5th tier in around a decade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,568 ✭✭✭Flaneur OBrien

I’m not sure about this. Apparently a big part of Lutons recruitment is chemistry between players and personalities in the dressing room.

it’s one of those, it’s worked for the last 9 years, so why change it straight away?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,933 ✭✭✭kksaints

That's because clubs almost never get relegated to the fifth tier in Italy and usually restart in the fourth tier Serie D like Bari did. Plus from Serie C down is regionalised and has multiple divisions so Serie C has 60 teams compared to League ones 24. Essentially due to league formats Serie C is third and fourth tier combined.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,328 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

So do you have any teams that were serie D and made it to serie A? Spezia, I think is one , but they did it with a billionaire sugar daddy. Hoffenheim, did it, also with a billionaire sugar daddy.

teams are a lot more upwardly and downwardly mobile in the English league. It’s a really good feature of it rather than other top european leagues were it’s more predictable.

Even in the prem; west ham, Villa, Leeds and Newcastle have all being relegated within recent memory. Historically big teams. Seldom seen in the other top European leagues especially Italy where 6 (inter, Juve, ac, Roma, lazio, Napoli) of the 7 sisters just dominate season in, season out. Unless they get relegated for off field irregularities of course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,933 ✭✭✭kksaints

Salernitana, Monza and Cremonese have all played fourth tier since 2000. Just with regards your other point with regards historically big clubs getting relegated which while rare in Italy although I'd slightly disagree on the point with the likes of Sampdoria, Bologna, Hellas Verona, Torino and Genoa all spending time in Serie B and lower in Hellas case. It's more common in recent years for traditional giants in Germany with clubs like Bremen, Stuttgart, Schalke, Hamburg, Kaiserslautern, Koln and Gladbach all having gotten relegated and spent time in the 2 Bundesliga. Basically my point is that English exceptionalism is rarely that exceptional when you look through other leagues. There's a lot more commonality than people think, they're just less exposed to other countries football albeit nowhere near to the same extent as years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,328 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

It is exceptional to see teams climb to the summit after previously dropping from the summit to the fourth or fifth tier in the matter of a 5-11 years (the climb) though. For two teams who have gone through this to meet in a playoff final just wouldn’t happen in another major league in Europe.

Agreed I think the Championship is the most entertaining league in Europe

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 15,694 Mod ✭✭✭✭dfx-

It has gone well so far, they have agreed a 5 year deal on the previous terms as anchor tenant with no rugby or other sports.

It looks like the new owner is not like SISU so far and haggling over small sums to spend as little as possible and threatening court every other minute.

It would've been spectacular to see Coventry go up within six months of them being bought out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,612 ✭✭✭✭cj maxx

It’s good to see Parma back up to Seria B and doing well. Currently in 4th

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,117 ✭✭✭jacool

Agreed. In the complicated play-offs the first two matches are over and the teams that came 7th and 8th have been eliminated by the teams that finished 5th and 6th.

Now its gets like the English play-offs so its 3rd vs 6th and 4th vs 5th over two legs, meaning Parma travel to Cagliari on Tuesday before hosting them at the weekend. Get though that tough tie, then its more than likely Bari in a one off final. They are moving to Puma for the kit next year. Just remains to see if it'll be in Serie A or B.

The most cruel finish to a game- going to be a very long time for Barnsley fans to get over that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,079 ✭✭✭✭Tom Mann Centuria

Completely unjust, not that that's Wednesdays fault, and they deserved it for keeping Peterborough in League One.

The brother is a Wednesday fan and bumped into Graham Rowantree in aldi before the match whilst wearing his jersey, congratulated him on his final win and he turned around and said good luck on yours later! Just waiting on the 22nd of June to see when the family derby fixtures are!

Opened a new thread, but will just continue this instead.

Wrexham look like they will be involved in the goals again this year - lost 3-5 at home.

QPR are going to leak a serious amount of goals. Only survived by a point last year, can't see them not going down this year.
