Transferring insurance to a new car

For context I have my own car, fully taxed, insured and NCT'ed

I have a second car, bought in January this year and I plan to use to drive through Europe/Asia later this year. This car needs to be taxed insured and NCT'ed.

NCT is booked for next month, I cannot get that done with tax/insurance and I can't get it taxed without insurance.

I've gotten confirmation that I can transfer my insurance from one car to the other.

Does anyone know if my transferred insurance will legally allow me to get taxed on this second car?

Only one car will ever be insured at a time, and when one car is insured, the other will absolutely not be driven.

FWIW, I also need to pay overdue tax from January this year as the car was not declared off the road.

You don't need insurance to tax the car - when it asks for the policy number on the website, just stick in unknown or N/A or something and it will accept it. I don't think I've given any insurance details when taxing a car anytime in the last decade.

Put in "N/A" or even "1234" and it will accept it, plenty of times in the past I was taxing my car and idnt have my full policy number to hand so I just entered the first 4/5 digits and it worked no issues.

If you are taxing it online the insurance details requested link up with no database and any input works.

Why would you tax the car? The police in Europe/Asia don’t care if you’ve paid Irish motor tax. Just drive to the NCT with no tax and save yourself having to pay 6 months worth of backdated tax.

As with all the advice here, you don't have to have a valid insurance policy to tax the car. The system will accept any made up policy number and date in there.

If you are planning on going around Europe AND Asia, just make sure with your insurance company that you are covered and for how long. A lot of policies have a 30 day limit on travelling outside of Ireland and they usually only provide European cover... Asia might cost extra.

Ya it's less than 30 days in Europe and we have to make alternate plans for the Asian part of the trip.

I agree but we do have to drive the car in Ireland, and I'd prefer not to get caught with no tax even though it'd be on Irish roads for only 3 days non-consecutive before going abroad

Fair enough. You could transfer the ownership to a spouse and then declare it off the road. It’s perfectly legal to drive a car thats declared off the road with no tax to and from NCT and to carry out repairs.

Are you sure? If you're driving it to the NCT centre the car is not off the road, unless it can float or fly.

Your Irish policy is valid for it's full term in any other EU/EEA country, you have the minimum cover required in any EU/EEA country. What they do restrict is fully comp or TPFT parts of your policy so if you have an expensive car it can be an issue, since you are going to be leaving one of your cars uninsured for long periods it's a risk you are already taking.
